I havent watched US tv in about a year, so I dont know if this show is still going strong. But this is (or was?) the most popular show in the England. Why? This has to be the most miserable, hatefull collection of human beings Ive ever seen. British people in chatrooms have told me its popular because it depicts real life. I hope real life isnt really like that in England.

Oh I am sure it was for that region of Berlin. Kinda funny.

RE: From Grange Hill to Eastenders to Spandau
I could be wrong here, but i think the band was indeed called after that part of Berlin, but not for the MG factory. Spandau also was the prison where nazi-criminals convicted in Nürnberg sat their sentences, and i believe that during the early 1980s either Albert Speer or Rudolf Hess (don’t know anymore which one, forgive my ignorance) was the only remaining inmate.

Common name the German troopers gave the MG42 was “Spandau” (from the region of which it came)

RE: From Grange Hill to Eastenders
Oh, and when talking about Eastenders: wasn’t one of the Kemp brothers from Spandau Ballet in it? Just to get some 1980s-nostalgia in here too, of course.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 21-02-03 AT 03:34Â AM (GMT)]Hey, no one here from the 80’s?
If you watched E.enders last week (hence Mark’s farewell), how could you forget Mark from Grange Hill days? :+
I wonder if anyone remembers the Grange Hill Headmistrss’ name: Mrs ??? ………
I was too young to remember all the plots & details, but I can even today recognise the theme tune from “miles away” !!!!! Those were the days ……… 😉

RE: Eastenders
The rerun they had of Faulty Towers the other day was “The American” where a pushy American visits the hotel. “I want a waldorf salad!”
(btw the guy that played the American in that episode you will see him in a small part as a Marine Colonel in the movie “Full Metal Jacket”.)

RE: Eastenders
Mixtec.
The aircraft in your picture are the ‘Angel Interceptors’ flown by the Angels, Rhapsody, Harmony and Melody. The arch enemies of Captain Scarlet and his sidekick Captain Blue were the ‘Mysterons’ and their agent inside Spectrum Captain Black. See if you can find a photo of an SPV or Spectrum Pursuit Vehicle, I’m sure you’ll like it. Dave and I probably had most of the toys that went with these programmes but like everything else they get thrown or given away. We’d probably be worth a fortune if we’d kept them.
Dave,
do you remember Land of the Giants? That was something else. Space 1999 was OK but UFO was brilliant. Of course I remember the whacky races and Catch the pigeon.

Kev , I think Supercar was one of the first of the Andersons puppet programmes so it wasnt as good as the others.
My memories of the World cup was splashing about in the fountains in Trafalgar Square then getting told off by my mum when I got home soaking wet ,well it saved on the washing.
We were a bit better off than you Kev, we had a two story semi-detatched cardoard box.
You’re right we had no mobile phones, no computers, no play stations, and only 2 TV stations in black and white, sigh! halcyon days!
………….even then we had Coronation Street!!!

RE: Eastenders
I just looked up supercar, Joe 90 and Captain Scarlet on a web search to find there all sci’fi puppet animation by the Andersons. I never heard of them but they sure look interesting. Speaking of supercar, isnt Speed Racer the best all time tech cartoon. The japaneese still
havent topped that one after 40 years. Heres a pic of a floating aircraft carrier in Captain Scarlet.

RE: Eastenders
Dave,
I never liked Supercar. Thunderbirds, Joe 90, Captain Scarlet were more my kind of programme. Those were the days, pretending you were interested in a historical programme, just so you could stop up later, reliving the ’66 World Cup final with my Dad across the backyard five minutes after it finished, playing in the street safe in the knowledge you weren’t about to be killed by an artic. None of this Playstation or Nintendo rubbish, we had to make our own entertainment in them days, none of this ‘en suite’ business, we lived in a cardboard box in’t middle o’t road……..
The scary thing is I’m beginning to sound just like my Dad.

RE: Eastenders
The who basic premiss of Space 1999 was that radioactive waste dumped on the far side of the moon somehow exploded and blew the moon out of earths orbit is technically speaking rubbish.
Simply speaking the energy required to move the moon out of its orbit is almost identical to the amount of energy needed to totally destroy the moon (as in Death star destruction sequence).
Also if they are going to send nuclear waste to the moon… why not send it to the sun and dispose of it properly?

Thunderbirds , the best sci-fi ever next to the Muppets “Pigs in space”

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 18-02-03 AT 05:50Â PM (GMT)]Ill admit I got addicted to Blake7 although I think they intentionally went out of their way to make the effects and costumes corny looking. Ive often wondered what it would be like if you were to use the scripts and actors in Blake7 with the special effects of US sci-fi like startrek/babalon5.
Arthur- How can you say Dr Who is better than Blake7 ? Dr Who is just psycho with guys running around shooting people with their fingers, totally absurd. And you dont like Space1999? That was probably the most realistic, high quality sci-fi show ever made, that to this day is better than the modern startrek shows. It was done by the british husband/wife team the Andersons who also did the tv series UFO and the puppet animation sci-fi the Thunderbirds. UFO was also outstanding and a very definate equal to todays sci-fis.
