Elderly folks

Sky High. When I was discharged from Hospital last Aug, I was told that the District Nurses would visit me every week.
I saw two, but only once. they have failed to do the job they are getting paid for.I have never seen either of them since the last week of Aug last year.
I am a none entity as far as many things, I have found out.
I have ALL my marbles,;) and am totaly none reliant on anyone else, but general nursing, or a watchful eye as the two district nurses were supposed to do.would have helped me, now and then. I honestly believe, that there a Government edict that states once reaches a certain age, you don’t exist, unless like me you still pay Income Tax.I stand to be corrected on the following, but I believe it was Hitachi, who had a factory, (T.V.) in Wales, they apparently would not employ anyone over the age of 35!! as they classed them as too old.

It “Ps” me off, just down the road where I live is a row of Council Houses, no probs or status symbols, re Council houses, however, 6 months ago a young 18 yrs old who couldn’t keep her legs shut, had a baby, the Council found her a house (one of the Council houses I was on about), DSS provided her with a TV, fridge, furniture, all fitted for free,thanks to Joe Bloggs. I.M.H.O. if you get pregnant, in todays modern society, it’s your fault, they have the morning after pill, the contraceptive pill, coil etc, etc.
So, why should I and others have to foot the bills?.
You get yourself into that situation, YOU sort it out,
Also, her “Boyfriend”, has done a runner, and pays nothing for the upkeep of mother and child.The C.S.A. will no doubt be trying to get him to contribute towards the upkeep of both.but if he changes his job every 6 months, he can get away without paying, as it takes the CSA to update his details, It’s a loophole that needs closing.;)

As I thought – older than me, but only just………;) My grandson thinks I’m old so that’s fine by me. I don’t think he knows about the “elderly”…..

I was talking about much more than just one-parent families. Except in the case of widowhood, they do only have themselves to blame. Who else?

Hi S.H. 70 in July, should I last that long, and I detest the word OLD.
I do agree with all of what you have stated re the one parent families, although in that respect they only have themselves to blame. Look at India, they look after their elderly parents, and I would bet a mint, even if there were Care Homes they wouldn’t put their parents in one.

I had an elderly friend who was older than me, and had medical problems, and was disabled, he tried to fill in a sheaf of forms to enable him to obtain the benefits he was entitled to, but was confused by some of the totaly irrelevant questions that needed answering. He had been seen by a NHS Dr at his home, and given a load of tests to do, even though his own Dr stated he would qualify.It took many months of arguing his case, each department pushing him onto another, and so on and so forth.In the end, he won, and got back money, but it nearly made him a total wreck in the process, and as I helped him, he didn’t get told he was entitled to a Carer until, I went through all the bumff he had, he was so confused, he had no help from any Government department, and I.M.H.O hung out to dry. No one was at all interested.
He died some 9 months later, the problems and stress he was put through undoubtedly helped his early demise.

I’ve never much liked the rather coy word elderly. If I am judged to be old, then so be it!;)

My response to your question is that I only have a limited expereince of what goes on outside these shores to make a sensible comment. However the big difference I have seen is that, in general, in those European countries I know well, the family is a much more significant entity. And with that goes the fact that old people are cared for as a part of the extended family in a way which has long gone here. There are state facilities but in some cases perhaps no better than ours.

I strongly believe that the breakdown of the family unit, the huge increase in single parent families, the large decrease in the perceived value of marriage and the loss of interest in the old are the root causes of many of our social problems.
