RE: Flight Sims

Sounds like a good idea to me BartBoy. Why doesn’t someone do an RAF career sim?

You could start out at Cranwell in the Fireflys and work your through, depending on your performance your career could go to fast jets, or rotary wing, multiengine etc. Part of the career could include airshows as well as theatres of war.

That could be awesome! I’d buy it:)

RE: Flight Sims

I always thought it would be a good idea to produce a simulation on an aerobatic team eg the Red Arrows or the Thunderbirds. You could start as the rookie learning the formations and building up to full shows chopping and changing positions or finally being leader and being in charge of the calls and formations. You could then do shows at diff locations making it challenging to plan and execute with diff weather etc . I think it would be a real challenge ,maybe there is a flight sim comp out there that might be interested.Any views?

RE: Flight Sims

Im running a 1.4 Athlon overclocked to 1.6 512Mb RAM and a GeForce2 Pro with 64Mb onboard and can run FS2002 at full detail level at 1240.

You should be alright with your 1Gig Athlon, what graphics card have you got, cos that can make all the difference.

RE: Flight Sims

P2, yes, Typhoon is a silly bit of software. I got fed up and binned my copy!

Incidentally, what sort of hardware do you need to get smooth performance out of FS2002? I have an Athlon 1GHz with 256Mb RAM.

RE: Flight Sims

IL-2 is amazing, just downloaded the v1.2 patch, so will try the Junkers later! My list includes:

F29 Retaliator (my first Sim on the A500)
Gunship (A500 again)
Jetstrike (not really a sim, but was a good laugh on CD32)

Currently I am playing:
Falcon 4.0sp
IL2
Comanche 4
CFS2 and loadsa addons!
FS2002 and a few addons.

Whos into RTS games here? I bought Sudden Strike 2 from Key Publishing and was up till 3.00am last night playing it. I always wanted the first one but never got round to buying it. THe only problem with it is that you lose all track of time.

PS. We should organise a dogfighter league or something.

RE: Flight Sims

I bought Eurofighter Typhoon the other day for about 10 US dollars and it seemed like a promising sim. I was very disappointed. I didn’t like the way the game was set up. You effectively have to wait for something to go wrong until you can fly. You can’t just set up a quick mission like all the Jane’s games or the CFS games and whatnot. I took it back and got my money back. I’m tempted to try out Jane’s F/A-18 or this other sim I saw that was about WWI. I’ve yet to try out a WWI dogfight sim and I think it’d be fun. I forget the name of it at the moment though. At least the one I saw I forget the name.

Oh yeah, and for any Phantom phreaks out there such as myself, a game entitled “Strike Fighters: Project 1” has recently come out and the F-4 is the star of this game. It is set in the 1960’s and includes a wide variety of Russian and American aircraft from the era. I believe you can fly a fairly wide array of aircraft from both sides, but the F-4 is the aircraft the game focuses on. I say it’s about time! F-16’s and Eurofighters bore me to tears anyway.

It’s still around 40 US dollars so I won’t buy it just yet, but if anyone here plays it please let me know how it is. Graphically it is supposed to be very good, but that doesn’t count for much if it isn’t any fun to play.

I’ll probably buy Il-2 eventually as I’ve downloaded the demo and I was very impressed to say the least.

RE: Flight Sims

Commanche 4 is amazing as is Il2 sturmovik.

The guy who let me use his comp for these actually downloaded the demo and then bought both sims next day.

I have CFS 1 I just like the simplistic way it runs good solid and reliable just how I like it.

But I do have FS2002 PRO on my comp at the moment but it slows my system down too much. I was actually amazed I could run it at all.

I run about with a cessna all over britain and it seems to run ok with this plane but not anything bigger. I really need more RAM and a Graphics card I run the intel 810 chipset at the moment.

Cant get EAW to run but I got it for nothing so cant really complain I will get it working eventually.

RE: Flight Sims

Hey, PII, we have had nice planes!

Here’s a (partial) list of combat A/C:

Hurricane, Spitfire, Mosquito, Meteor, F84, F84G, RF84, CF100, Hunter, F104, Mirage V (both attack and recce), F16.

Of course, it’s not the USAF, but hey… 10 million people, and a country that is smaller than one of your huge states 🙂

Btw, I tried the demo od IL2 (and had no proper joystick at that time). The results were catastrophic due to the engine’s torque… And somewhat was wrong, because even at full power, and everything retracted, the plane didn’t want to climb over 150 meters??? I had no time to try more, sadly.

RE: Flight Sims

By the way. To all you simmers out there I strongly recommend Il-2 Sturmovik. The game is simply amazing and I’ve only played the demo that I’ve downloaded. I plan to buy the game that’s for sure. The Il-2 is portrayed accurately it seems, especially in relation to the amount of punishment you can take. It is just a great game. Large variety of planes to fly including the P-39, LaGG-3, and other classics.

RE: Flight Sims

“And Garry, Fighters Anthology isn’t supposed to be perfect.”

It is not… I doubt if the developers of the game would even suggest that it was.

” You can’t criticize the graphic quality when it was put out quite a while ago. “

The graphic quality was not really that good when it was released either. And most of the aircraft feel the same… I often find myself flicking to an external view to see what aircraft I am flying.
As I said the graphics and feel of the aircraft let the game down now.
I like the idea of the information database but it is not fully implemented… ie there should be photos and info and movies about all of the aircraft… not just some aircraft.

“Also, it is more for general people than for die hard fans. “

This is true, but when I point out its problems I think I am informing those hardcore flight simmers here that if they want awesome graphics and realistic aircraft then they should look elsewhere. The range of aircraft is excellent and includes Blimps and stealth UAVs and B-2s and SR-71s etc etc but the accuracy of the flight model seems to have suffered too much for my liking and that is basically what I said I think.

PII- How would you rate some of the nintendo/x-box/playstation flight sims compared to comp? I saw an x-box flight sim that looked pretty good.

RE: Flight Sims

Oh man, I used to be so big into flight sims. Here’s my list from over the years.

U.S. Navy Fighters (sold it)
U.S. Navy Fighters 97 (have it still but not on comp)
ATF (gave it away)
Fighters Anthology (still on comp….my favorite by far!)
IAF (my second fav…..wonderful game)
USAF (good game but not on comp now)
WWII Fighters (great game but not on comp now)
CFS (great game but not on comp now)
FS2000 (on comp)
FS98 (not on comp)
Jetfighter II (not on comp)
Search & Rescue (on comp)
Su-27 Flanker (great game but not on comp)
Flanker 2.0 (not on comp)
Falcon 4.0 (not on comp)

Currently I downloaded the Il-2 demo and it looks great. If I buy another sim it will probably be that one cause I hear it is great. It might be a while though because I’d like to learn Search & Rescue 2 first. I got it for 10 bucks at Wal-Mart. The graphics are pretty good and I think a Coast Guard sim is a neat idea. I’m glad to see them get some recognition in the gaming world. I hope some of you will try this game out. It is great fun.

And Garry, Fighters Anthology isn’t supposed to be perfect. You can’t criticize the graphic quality when it was put out quite a while ago. Also, it is more for general people than for die hard fans. If you want a die-hard sim get F/A-18, F-15, Flanker 2.0, or Falcon 4.0. Fighters Anthology is the greatest flight sim game of all time in my opinion.
