France :
France – always there when they need you
Do you know how many Frenchmen it takes to defend Paris?
It’s not known, it’s never been tried
Somebody was telling me about the French Army rifle that was being advertised on e bay the other day – the description was, ‘Never shot. Dropped once.’
“Going to war without the French is like going deer hunting without your accordion.” –Donald Rumsfeld
Why do the French plant trees on both sides of their BLVDS?
So the Germans can march in the shade!
Instructions given to all French Military Personnel:
1. In case of attack, cut flag at dotted lines
2. Discard red and blue sections
3. Wave vigorously!
French Army tanks have five gears: four in reverse, and one forwards – in case the enemy attacks from the rear.
Why does the new French navy have glass-bottomed boats?
To look at the old French navy.
(Philosophical) If the French army is mobilized but there are no enemies around to fight will they still surrender?
Why do French army tanks have rearview mirrors? So they can see the battle.
What do you call 100,000 Frenchmen with their hands raised in the air?
The French Army
How can you recognize a French veteran?
Sunburned armpits.
Did you hear that President Bush insists that the French fight with us in the war on Iraq? He feels strongly that someone needs to teach the Iraqis how to surrender.
American to Frenchman: “Do you speak German?”
Frenchman: “No.”
American: “You’re Welcome!”
What did the Mayor of Paris say to the German Army as they entered during WWII? “Table for One Hundred Thousand?”.
A fine example of French courage,…. He ain’t crying is he?

Finesse
Geforce and Arthur
On this side of the pond, finesse (because we are so common and uneducated ) is usually associated with playing Bridge. Finesse equates to ‘trick’ which simply means an attempt to win a hand using cards of the wrong suit. Sort of the way France is trying to play its cards in the UN at the moment. Soon all will be asked to show their cards….. no trick will do, it will have to be a veto.
Trick’ is also used to discribe what whores do with their clients…. you know ‘turning a trick’. It usually involve lying on ones back or gettng on your knees.
This is a position which is more comfortable for those in some countries (or more familar for) than others.
You follow? Thats a line from Jaws. Jawing is slang for talk. Talk is cheep.
All in fun.

“They then nod knowingly as if they had made some sort of profound statement, at the same time aligning themselves with the ‘good guys’ who don’t think the few thousand Marsh Arabs that Hussein has killed are particularly worthy of consideration.”
Yes, it is all these liberals now that oppose the war that don’t care about the Marsh arabs or the Kurds… because when the Marsh Arabs rose up whill Bush snr was in charge and the Kurds rose up just after the Gulf war… at the suggestion of Bush Snr and no US help actually arrived then it was all those liberals fault’ wasn’t it. Or in the 80s under Reagan when Saddam was gassing Kurds… Bush snr and Reagan… the biggest liberal lefty anti war A holes I ever saw… Bay of Pigs part 2?
“But as a nation there seems to be something wrong with the hard-wiring in their collective brain.”
Please Moggy, tell us what the French were supposed to do? Stand and fight? …like the British did?
When The US joined the war in 41 they hit the beaches of Normandie straight away didn’t they. Belgium, Denmark, all of the countries in the region didn’t surrender… they just kept on fighting. Occupied Europe was just France.
Wake up.

Good one Arthur! You have a very fine sense of humor
By: Arthur - 12th March 2003 at 22:14
Finesse? I don’t think there is a translation. The word is just not used in American English, i think it’s in fact an unknown concept.
However, the US has a very effective word and concept which it prefers to use where other countries/languages use something akin to finesse.
Firepower.
Massive firepower.
As long as the subject of the massive firepower doesn’t have too much firepower itself, of course. Like those bloody Somalians.

There`s one word of french I`m not able to translate into English though, `finesse`. Any suggestions?:p
By: Arthur - 12th March 2003 at 19:30
Exactly my thoughts, Sauron! France is no better than the US. Actually, i think they have quite a lot in common – not in issues, but in attitude.

Please! French culture is but one part of so called ‘western culture’. We all understand pride, but spare us the superiority complex will you!

The fact that France made a victory in 1648 (Westfalen, the turning point in history which was the start of the modern times) and ruled the continent from that point to deep in de 19th century (Bismarck) has nothing to do with this all? That the whole phylosophy on which the west is based (rationality) was discovered by 17th century frenchmen like Descartes. Ohh, and forgot about the Aufklaurung, Voltaire, Rousseau and Montesqieu.
Ohh and the Franco-Prussian war. I assume you are referring to the Seven-year conflict between Prussia+England and France+Habsburg(Austria)+Sweden+Russia. It was not just a conflict between two states. The reason why this war was lost is very simple, because Austria and France have never been allies before. France never fought against the Prussians, it were the Austrians who did. France tried to save its ass in Lousiana, Canada and the Indies.
`It also establishes the Second Rule of French Warfare: “France only wins when America does most of the fighting.” `
Ahh, ofcourse, it were the Americans who helped France in its war against the British back in 1776. Lafayette?
Some of you guys should really consult a history-book.
France lost the Spanish war of succession
Not 100%. In this war (and the previous nine-year war) France was still able to defend itself against the rest of Europe (Habsburg, UK, United Provinces). And France managed to keep the Spanish throne.
Thirty Yearsβ War: Although not technically a principal, they did manage to get invaded anyway. Amusingly, they claim a tie on the basis that eventually the other participants started ignoring them.
BS. Richelieu won this war because he backed (financially and militarilly) Christiaan of Denmark, the Swedes and the Dutch in their war with the Kaiser. France only participated actively after 1632, and made many victories.
The biggest mistake France ever made was cooperating with Suleiman and the Ottoman Empire against Habsburg (16h century). If France and Germany would have cooperated here, they would have succeeded pushing back the Turks from the Balkan long before the French Revolution.
Ohh and France surrendered to the Muslims. Strange, not long time ago I`ve been to Paris and on top of the Elysee there are still the words Egalite, Liberte and Fraternity instead of Allah Akbar.
Wheter you like it or not, the French, more than any other people have build our western culture. You have to admit that. Yeah I`m still proud to be 25% French :9

here-read
Gallic Wars: The French not only lost β¦ they lost to an Italian.
Hundred Yearsβ War: Although they kinda/sorta mostly lost, they were saved by Joan of Arc (a female schizophrenic), who by accident created the First Rule of French Warfare: “France’s armies are victorious only when not led by a Frenchman.”
Italian Wars: France became the first and only country in history to lose not just one but TWO wars against Italians.
Wars of Religion: France was 0-5-4 against the Huguenots.
Thirty Yearsβ War: Although not technically a principal, they did manage to get invaded anyway. Amusingly, they claim a tie on the basis that eventually the other participants started ignoring them.
War of Devolution: Tied.
Dutch War: Tied.
War of the Augsburg League: Lost, claimed tie.
King William’s War: Lost, claimed tie.
French and Indian War: Lost, claimed tie.
Three ties in a row caused some deluded folks to label the period as the height of French military power.
War of the Spanish Succession: Lost.
American In a Scribean foreshadow of the future, France claims a win even though the English colonists saw way more action.
This is eventually known as “de Gaulle Syndrome.”
It also establishes the Second Rule of French Warfare: “France only wins when America does most of the fighting.”
French Revolution: Won, primarily due the fact that the opponent was also French.
Napoleonic Wars: Lost.
Franco-Prussian War: Lost.
World War I: Tied and on the way to losing. France was saved by the United States.
World War II: Lost. Conquered French liberated by the United States and Britain.
War in Indochina: Lost.
Algerian Rebellion: Lost. The first defeat of a Western army by a Non-Turkic Muslim force since the Crusades. It gave birth to the First Rule of Muslim Warfare: “We can always beat the French.” This rule is identical to the First Rules of Italian, Russian, German, English, Dutch, Spanish, Vietnamese and Esquimaux Warfare.
War on Terrorism: France has surrendered to Germans and Muslims just to be safe.

Well, it would seem Iβve stirred up a lot of feeling over this post, I only wish people would have read the βHope it doesnβt offendβ part of the title. The thread was intended as a piece of light humor and not a direct or personal dig at French people. I, like many have had relatives fight in wars and have great respect for anyone who played a part in making a freedom in my country which me and my family are able to enjoy.
Just remember, lifeβs short so lighten up a bit.

“However , certainly after the end of war , a bunch of busisnessmen will act as you mention. But what? This war is just because of big money isn’t it?”
I’m not sure about this.
Start a discussion about the war and inevitably somebody says
“It’s all about oil”
They then nod knowingly as if they had made some sort of profound statement, at the same time aligning themselves with the ‘good guys’ who don’t think the few thousand Marsh Arabs that Hussein has killed are particularly worthy of consideration.
Ok so can somebody explain what “It is all about oil” actually means?
Is Bush going to build a pipeline from Iraq to the US and syphon it all off?
There’s plenty of oil currently sloshing around the world whilst Iraq is embargoed (Other than the limited amounts they are allowed to sell). Why does a major oil producer like the US want to flood the market and lower prices?
I suppose you could credit Bush with some super cunning. After all the sooner we use up the Earth’s fossil fuel resources, the quicker we can rid ourselves of the threat of global warming, but I think this would be stretching his far-sightedness beyonds the bounds of credibility.

I definitely agree with the begining of your thread.
About the above , I don’t think so. 85% of the people in this country DO think that this war is not legitimate (so far).
However , certainly after the end of war , a bunch of busisnessmen will act as you mention. But what? This war is just because of big money isn’t it?
