Hi,
I have just come aboard, and after the thread on ‘Memphis Belle’ thought I would try and dig out my photos of the 6 weeks that I spent at Duxford and Binbrook filming.
I will look forward to sharing them with you all.

Y’all check the B17 thread, I’m trying to get some wartime pictures on the website, with the help of Andy in beds. I’ve a lot of hours in the best plane ever built, because
it brought my butt back from the big conflict.

Thanks Ron,
You’re right, we sure were lucky, some in more ways than one!
No mention yet of the thousands of rounds of 50cal blanks that were fired off from live weapons. oh dear boys with big toys eh!

Hi B-17man, and let me belatedly add my welcome to you to these forums. Great shots, and thanks for sharing. I visited UK in 1990 and only managed to see Sally B dressed up as the Belle, but it was treat enough for me, being a warbird virgin 😉
Looking forward to more shots if you have any…
If anyone is interested in Aviation Art prints of the Memphis Belle, you can do a search on the link below and find practically every available print on the Belle! 🙂

The rudder is at Duxford, along with a few other little gems.
An arrangement was made for some of the pieces to be removed before the scrap men entered the fray.
Basically the IGN bods arrived in a king air or something like that, looked at the wreck, put their arms up, said mae-oui, got back in their plane and went home.

Bang on! I can remember the chaps face who was trying to buy it, but I cannot remember his name.

I have an even better one somewhere, On an evening, with the same line up, but PA474 flew right over the top and I was, for once in the right place at the right time.

Was there anything left to salvage ?
By then the owners were probably the insurance company and they wanted anything they could make back on their loss.

but unbelievably the local scrapman came in with a very high offer
amazing that those scrap guys couldn’t figure out that a B17 cowling, Rudder would be worth MUCH more than its weight as scrap Metal .
Whats the price of a B17 Rudder in the B17 CO-OP , No doubt Landing Gear is very expensive as I know Sally B had hers replaced a few years ago
Best Ron
any more shots apreciated – not sure i could take the slicing up of F BEEA but it would intersting , did you see Mike J’ beautiful shots of her ??

I do have some photos of them cutting it up to remove, very sad sight,
I believe the engines did surface a few years later for sale but I would love to know what happened to her

Nose Art and IGN B17 WRECK
Thanks B17 man for the superb shots – didn’t know that Sally B was marked up as “IS YOU IS OR IS YOU AINT MY BABY ” – I wonder if that ended up on the cutting room floor with all the rest of the unused gems !!
Thanks for adding the photos of the crash using the Pembroke – I thought the tail was salvaged from the IGN Plane which crashed as the tail looked so authentic in that Movie crash scene .Did they salvage anything from the IGN plane -F – BEEA – Maybe some part of the aircraft could have been useable ? rudder , horizontal stabiliser , cowling ,what a pity
This has been a great topic

I love the one of the lineup of bombers and the C47 taken from inside the office, looking out the window. It reminds me of the classic magazine advert for bourbon (Southern Comfort?) of the same scenario with a silver B17 outside and the bottle on the desk.
Dave
I remember that ad. I think it was from the 1970’s and it was Sally B that was used.
The slogan said something like ‘After eight hours in the air, the last thing you want is luke warm tea’
Has anyone got a copy of that advert they’d like to scan in or even send me?
It had a very definate influence on the young AIB mind! 🙂 🙂 😉 😉 🙂 🙂

What is the story behind all those large scale models on the scaffolding? Was that used for the mass taxi shots? I’m trying to place them in relation to the film. I wonder what became of the models.
Cheers
