Yesterday evening I was making my weary way to the supermarket and as I pulled into a space what should greet my sight but a stowed and covered Westland Wasp in RN blue. Parked. At ASDA Colchester. Bizarre I think you’ll agree. Anyway, I managed to leave without checking the serial which wasn’t immediately obvious, so can’t check which helo it might have been. There was a chap in a white van obviously guarding it, and the supermarket staff thought it was there to raise money for something. From Culdrose perhaps? The van lacked Royal Navy; Meet Interesting People and Torpedo Them or similar, it was blank as far as I recall.
Any ideas?

Next time you are stuck on a mountain, or hopelessly adrift at sea, a fixed wing aircraft and a helicopter suddenly appear. I bet you will be more pleased to see the helicopter than the plank. 😀 😎
Depends, on a mountain a Fiesler Storch would do nicely, worked for Mussolini, and hopelessly adrift a flying boat would do, faster than a helicopter.

There are two types of boat: Submarines.. & targets…

Maybe a silly question, what are the victory marks supposed to mean? I mean the yellow “star trek enterprises” with a red cross over it.
Not sure. There were 2 kills marks on one side, but only one on the other side.
Could be connection between Klingons and the Wasp’s deck handling attributes ?

If it wasn’t for the fact it’s a helicopter I’d have popped down at lunchtime to take a look…..

You can just see the marks in the first photo of reply 18, but it is more clearer in real life.

Because they raise money for charity by doing this. You pay a small amount to have a go at guessing the correct serial. Of course for us enthusiasts, the cat is already out of the bag, but for the general public it’s a game.
Ah… i see.
The geezer standing like a lemon with a bucket did ask someone if they wanted to join a raffle for a helicopter flight.
Then i overheard someone asked a question about the Wasp to be greeted with the lame reply…. “dunno mate, i only stand ‘ere and help out”

Spotted today (and most of this week) not far from it’s home, at Morrisons (ex-Safeway) store Tiverton, Devon…. Wasp XT788.
Wonder why its marked ‘XT78?’

It’s a composite airframe. Main sections are from XT788 but it also incorporates bits from other machines including G-BKLJ (formerly G-17-2) and 5X-UUX.

In October 2001 & June 2002, a Wasp (XT788 – but marked as XT78? – G-BMIR) was displayed in the main shopping area at Bexleyheath, owned by Xray Tango Helicopter Club, its home is at Dunkeswell, if this is the same aircraft.

Yes, before the Wasp appeared, there were just a few Skeeters, Fireflies and the odd Moth and Dragonfly! 😀

Yes, I’ve noticed bl**dy wasps all around the fruit in the summer there!
Too bad we can’t attract some mosquitos!

That’s the fella. Thanks all for the replies. It might be a helicopter, but it’s still more interesting than the usual things you find in car parks. Cars, oiks etc.
The strangest thing I ever saw in a car park was a semi-restored Zero…it was on it’s way to the NMUSAF.
It beats the usual Mitsubishi’s you normally see. 🙂
