Hurricane chronology

Does anyone have, or can we piece together, a chronology of all the first flights of rebuilt Hawker Hurricanes since the Battle of Britain film in 1969 when there were famously only three left flying.

I’m curious to know when and where each example that has taken flight since made its aerial debut. And can we add in who owns each, where they are now and if they’re still flying? Plus if they are displayed publicly (either inthe air or in a museum).

It seems amazing that right into the 1990’s there were only three, and now there seems to be loads of flyers, which is great. What is the biggest factor in the resurgence? Would I have been the establishment of Hawker Restorations? Or the discoveries of numerous airframes in Russia? Something else?

What’s the A-197 in the foreground of the last picture?

What’s happening with these images?

Looks like you’ve scanned the full area of your scanner bed

Reynolds Hurricane

Here is a shot of the Reynolds Hurricane 5418. It has not flown, but is restored to airworthy condition. It has done a couple of fast taxy runs.

Is this one on the list of ten you mention Mike J? I cannot see the name of who owns this one. What I want to know is what is up with the colour scheme. Is this an authentic Canadian scheme? Or is it a made up one? Either way it looks very nice.

BBMF – 2 (incl. 1 under repair)
TFC
HAC
Breighton
Shuttleworth

UK = 6

Have all 6 UK Hurris ever been at a show together? That would surely be worth doing.

Hi all–

Weighing in with one more…RCAF 5418, Mk.XII at the Reynolds Museum at Wetaskiwin, Alberta, also flyable but never flown. Often confused with Harry Whereatt’s Mk.XII at Assiniboine, Saskatchewan, which is on the CCAR as C-GGAJ and apparently HAS flown at least a couple times since completion.

BTW, the GRP replica Hurricane that “replaced” 5377/C-GCWH at Mt.Hope stands on the refurbished original main gear assemblies from 5377. Much of the core structure of that Hurricane survived the 1993 fire albeit badly warped and oxidized.

Ahh, I seem to remember this one as being “airworthy but not flown” from one of the magazines….

There’s also the little known RCAF5447 owned by Harry Whereatt in Seskatchewan, Canada, according to this page: http://www.warbirdregistry.org/hurriregistry/hurricane-rcaf5447.html

(there is a photo of the aircraft running on the ground).

So that makes 11.

I forget how many flyable Hurris we have now – isn’t it something like 10?

My first Flypast.

Flypast´s September 1999 issue featured an 8-page-report on the BOB-Hurricanes (LF363, PZ865, 5377 RIP, P2617, Z7015 and LF751) and their fate, including a MK I cutaway and fold out profile/ painting of PZ865 as MI-G.

The pictures in this issue made me building Revell´s MK II Hurricanes as Z7015 and LF751 in (1999) colours and G-ORGI in its 1991 first-flight-primer-scheme.

Thanks Mike.

That second photo looks like a scene straight out of the 1940’s, and at first glance I thought it was one of those really evocative oil paintings.

Cheers
