Which aircraft did you perhaps want to see fly but, for what ever reason, didn’t get the opportunity to see it….
….only to miss out on it completely? 🙁
For me it was OFMC’s La-9. Not sure whether I will ever see it fly now.
Come on, share with us your tales of woe. It’s good to talk!
Regards,
Paul

The one I’d have loved to have seen was the formation which the BBMF put up together with BAe’s Mossie… 🙁

Spitfire Mk.XI
Hi All
(especially Daz-who’ll remember me banging on about this particular aircraft recently).
My aviation regret is the loss of PL983.
As I’ve said here before my Dad took my picture standing near her in 1971 (approx) at Old Warden and I followed her progress over the years but never got in the right place at the right time again. I’ve seen an awful lot of rare aircraft in my time but I never got to have my picture taken with (or saw fly) my favourite Spitfire before her tragic loss.
Andy.

AR213
AR213 in ‘Piece of Cake’ livery.
It took off just as I was arriving at Duxford. It would have been 20 or 27 May 1988.
Apart from being third in line in the well known peel away shot, I have never seen a photograph of it.
Of course somebody out there just might have one? 😎

There are two aircraft that stand out for me as those that escaped my camera.
P-38 “Miss Behavin”
Never managed to see this before it left the UK.
A-26 Invader I think it was called “Black Belle” owned by the same person as the Beech “Beech Belle”. (see photo below)
I believe the invader was only in the UK, for a very limited time. I have only ever seen one photograph of her, in a jet black scheme.
I would also add the catalina that recently left North Weald to my list. I can not understand why this never appeared at a show.

For me it would have been a Javelin, or a Dh Hornet..
Talking of SR-71s, I was driving past Mildenhall one morning at a ridiculously early time to see an SR-71 getting airborne….And it was gone. Another time I got to see a U-2 fly as well. This was at a time when both the UK & US Governments were denying that the aircraft were based in the UK.
See, Governments were lieing then too!

Looks like I have to count myself lucky in that the vast majority of the aircraft mentioned in previous posts I’ve seen, often at the places mentioned as well, although not necessarily been able to take photo’s or video of for keepsake.
I suppose though, 2 I would like to see fly would be the B-29 Superfortress and the B-26 Marauder.
B-29 ‘Fifi’ was one aircraft I was looking forward to seeing most at the USAF 50th Anniversary Airshow at Nellis AFB back in 1997. Alas, she had an engine failure en route to the show or just before leaving, so was a no show…..:(
I did manage to tick off a few others on my ‘wish to see flying list’ during that trip, such as the Collings B-24, P-38 White Lightnin’, CAF ‘He111’, and awesome F-106 Delta Dart:D.
Nellis was also the last time I saw a SR-71 fly as well.
Other than that, it’s back in time to the aircraft I was too young enough to see, such as the Javelin, Scimitar, Hornet, Valiant, F-105 Thunderchief, B-47 Stratojet, B-58 Hustler etc.

She was at a few places. I saw her at Biggin Hill and I think she was there both days. She also flew down to Dunsfold for he families day there. I did a piece for Aeroplane on it.
She did have more than her fair share of engine problems and the powers-at-be at Harlingen (then) were not happy. They had to keep a low profile under orders from above I believe.
Flight engineer told me “Our hotel is serving Lockheed beer. Drink one and P38”

I’m part of the SR-71-missers, unless a reeeeaaaally small silhouette of a Blackbird flying veeeeeeery high on it’s way back to Mildenhall counts, somewhere in the late 1980s counts.
And i’ll always wonder if that Tu-22M3 they started up at Solcy when i was there in 1996 were to have flown…

Is the Royal Australian Navy’s Firefly still flying at all? I’d love to see a Firefly too, they’re such beautiful aircraft. I’d also love to see a B17 flying. They had hoped to bring one to NZ for Wanaka 94 but it fell through, otherwise I’d definately have gone.

Where do you start!!!
For the Vulcan’s last show, my Dad and I decided to do Finningley instead of Leuchars that year, so suppose I was quite fortunate. (Do remember it was an awful day there as well with the weather). Also saw the La9 at Legends, so didn’t miss out there.
The one I did miis out on was the B-24 when it came over a few years ago. It was due to be at the airshow at Prestwick Airport (from memory the last one they did), but IIRC it got delayed on it’s way over.
Interesting reading the B-29 thread – that’s another I’d love to see.

For me, it was the Concorde and the DH Mosquito. I believe the Mosquito came to Oostende Belgium in 1995 but my parents didn’t let me go to the show. So, I got grounded that year. I was just a little kid and didn’t have a car to get there.
As for the Concorde, this plane also attended a show at Oostende. I am not shure but I believe it was in 1998. I was going to see it on the Sunday. But sadly, on Satuday, a accident occured at the show. A acrobatic machine crashed into the public killing pilot and people on the ground. The show on sunday was cancelled. So, I missed this one too. 🙁
I am also sad that I never saw the RNHF Firefly in the air. These are all planes which we might never see again. 🙁 But you never know what the future might bring.

I was very lucky to see the LA-9 at the Armore Airshow early last year, which was a total surprise to me and my mate as we hadn’t even heard it was going to fly. I believe it was actaully it’s first flight too! And it was stunning.
I would however have liked to see a few things. I am way too young to have seen the Sunderlands which I’d love to see (Kermit weeks should bring back OUR Sunderland to NZ!).
Everyone who’s ever seen a Canberra tells me they are stunning to see, again I am too young to have seen ours. Same with the Mosquito, I’d love to see one flying (soon hopefully the one in Auckland will take to the air)
I wish I’d seent he AFC Yak 3, which went overseas before I ever saw it. I wish I could see their Ratas flying too – I have only seen them static in the museum. Maybe some day. And apparently the OFMC Yak 3 is here now too, so fingers crossed.
There were a few Migs in NZ during the 1990’s which I never got to see. Don’t know what happened to these but you never hear of them these days.
I’d love to see a Lancaster flying. I’ve seen several static ones, but it’s not the same is it?
The one thing that bugs me is not seeing the Russian Sukhoi 27 team that was to appear at the Waikato Airshow in 1995. They advertised them for ages on TV and in the papers, and two or three days out the organisers cancelled them because they didn’t want to pay for the team’s hotel. W@nkers! Plus at the same show they billed a display by a Stealth bomber. Since only a few weeks before one had been at an Aussie airshow, we all thought it would be the same one on its way home to the USA. No – it was a con. They built up the crowd with crap like “Can you see it yet?” and then let off a ground pyrotechnic. There was no Stealth at all!!!!!! I paid good money for a gold ticket for that airshow, if it wasn’t for Sir Tim’s collection there I’d have been very very annoyed.
