Does anyone agree that there is a need for forum space to mention all those things that are of interest in the short term but, would not necessarily sustain a half a dozen or a dozen comments.
For example: Yesterday was the last day of the Six Nations rugby competition. Only of interest perhaps, to few on these Forums. I’d like to have placed a reminder but couldn’t find the last Six Nations subject, so didn’t bother.
Another example: Lord Neuburger, President of the Supreme Court mentioned that it was desirable that people should not be prevented from venting their often frustrated opinions on contentious issues for fear of condemnation. He thought that commentators who were opposed, were inhibited by the prospect of disapproval, from discussing rascism, homosexuality, ordination of females etc.
My Six Nations snippet was that it was a generally good result. Ireland won (by points difference) the Six Nations title from England. England won the Triple Crown and France was beaten ! Result.

Charlie, you can’t really speak for another person that you hardly know. These are very often deeply personal matters and deeply held and in the present circumstances prevailing, hardly likely to be discussed with a comparative stranger from another culture.

Whereas nationalisation didn’t cost the ‘good old taxpayer’ a penny right? Setting up the NCB in 1946, by buying privately owned collieries, didn’t cost the taxpayer hundreds of millions of pounds then? ‘Investing’ in the NCB didn’t cost the taxpayer several hundred million more pounds either? And then subsidising the production of coal, for decades, that didn’t cost the taxpayer anything either?
And who paid for all the coal-fired power-stations of the CEGB…
…I’m going to take a wild stab-in-the-dark and guess it was the taxpayer! 😉

All of my life I’ve never been able to work out which is the the lesser of two evils The evil of private ownership and capitalism and its attendant excesses or, the equally pernicious evil of state ownership and trade union influence and control and ITS excesses.
Perhaps they are simply beyond our capacity to control and ameliorate and we should therefore always factor in some element of ‘cushioning’ designed to remove at least some of the pain of both systems.

Have I properly read this? The D. Mail reports that George Osbourne confirms that the weekly state pension for new pensioners – those now reaching the pensionable age of 65 years – will from next April, 2016, receive £155.
Those pensioners already in receipt of a state pension will receive £119. Does anyone know or, can anyone guess the reason/s underpinning the discrepancy ?
This move might be actionable under anti discrimination legislation particularly that which is within the Human Rights Act.

The headline to-day: French police fire five thousand rounds of small arms fire – two dead. That’s not a good return for so much investment. There is no reason to believe that the British police would be any different.
Hence an earlier comment regarding fire discipline. The army are taught fire discipline – one bullet, one body. That is one reason for employing the army rather than the police to deal with these matters.

We learn today, to no great surprise given the utter incompetence of the DECC, that all coal fired power stations will be the closed in 10 years time. Cart and horse come to mind because there is as yet no announced plan for what will replace them. We do not have sufficient energy NOW so what Miss Rudd and her cohorts are planning is anyone’s guess. And of course she has to factor in sufficient energy production to cover the 65% of the time the wind machines cannot work because there isn’t enough wind or there’s too much wind. Ye gods – what a bunch of idiots!!
