It’s my alter ego, Barry! It was intended to be read as an East End geezer, in fact!;)

Sky high: Why are you impersonating someone from the West Country, when you are clearly from Kent?

I’ve got some wonderful news for all the contributors to this Forum. My philanthropically minded granny has left a considerable sum of money to be apportioned in almost equal amounts to every contributor who wishes to apply.

Her charity extends to everyone regardless. The only, and dare I write minimal qualification, is that all applicants send an amount of £5 to me personally to enable the processing of the paperwork to start the payments.

Send to my personal address: Rainbow Cottage, Potofgold Avenue, Scamshire. As I expect to be overwhelmed by demand, please do not solicit a receipt.

scam

I had an email once telling me that i was such a wonderful person that i had been selected to recieve a huge ammount locked in a secret account. i played along and actually received a cheque. I took this to the bank expalining I thought it was a scam. They told me they did not check that the cheque was issued by an existing bank and would accept it , its not for serveral days that you find out the cheque is made of rubber and by that time many have transfered the “admin fee” to the scammer.
I am happy to report i cost the gentleman from Nigeria several long distance phone calls and told him on the last one i knew has was scamming me from the start. he made an unpleasant comment about my Mother and hung up!!!!!!!:D

I received this message this morning : CONGRATULATION! :YOUR CELLPHONE NO HAVE BEEN AWARDED R950,000 IN OUR NOKIA YEARLY DRAW TICKET N0.066N CALL:MARK MORRIS 0N 0718224270 FOR YOUR PRIZE.

Immediately smelled a rat so I googled it and found it here

The puffed up South African government has made everyone register their cellphone numbers, name and proof of address but apparently doing nothing to at least cut off these scammers, which would be very easy now.

After being cold called by a (famous) double glazing company for the umpteenth time, I had had enough. I finally said yes I’m interested.
The following week, a well presented gentleman turned up one evening with a bunch of folders and pamphletts under his arm. I directed him though to the lounge, made him coffee and spent a delightful 90 minutes/2hrs going through some of the most beautiful and expensive conservatories I had ever seen.

Finally , after much deliberation, I focussed on a very nice one indeed.

“This one!”

After considerable faffing with a calculator, he looked at me and said “….with discounts available to me right now, the total price would be £14,500……how would sir be able to pay?, cash?, cheque?, bankers draft?”

“Pay?” I said “No, …..if you can leave me all this bumph, I will pass it on to my landlord and we’ll see what he says tomorrow……”

……you could hear a pin drop………

“You..you don’t own this property??”

“No, I rent it”

“You don’t own this property?”

“No sir”

“You didn’t tell me you did not own this property”

“I’m sorry, er…you didn’t ask”

He gathered up all his paperwork and departed soon after.

I walked him out to his car.

He didn’t say another word.

Anyway, I never heard from that company again.

Excellent:cool:

Pretending to be VERY hard of hearing can be great fun…

That’s what I pretend, in fact so hard of hearing that I can’t hear the phine ringing in the first place!

Agree with Moggy about the auto response to answering phones.

Funny old thing, tonight I had more withheld calls activity than normal, not sure if it’s the scammers or because I’ve been discussing classified aspects of the Lightning or a Hurricane landing at N.Weald!:D

My usual MO with the hacker lads is to pretend I’m not that good at operating computers (don’t have to act that hard 😀 ) I get the lad to run me through what he wants me to do to download his “risky free anti virus” program, all sorts of things go wrong of course, accidentally shutting the pc down & having to wait an extraordinarily long time for it to restart, finally the exasperated lad calls it a day.

Here’s one of my all time favourites though, wouldn’t mind trying this 😀

simply don’t answer any ‘withheld’, ‘out of area’, or ‘private’, ‘number unknown’ phone calls.

I have an answerphone that takes messages (and broadcasts the screened call) I simply never answer any of the above calls out of office hours. If somebody wants me they will leave a message

But some people appear to have Pavlovian conditioning and simply MUST answer any time the phone rings.

How strange.

Also using a net based soundboard to answer them can be a hoot, like Full Metal Jackets Gunnery Sgt Hartman 😉

Pretending to be VERY hard of hearing can be great fun, just deliberately mishear the words they’re saying and replace them with something similar sounding yet totally unrelated. And remember to SHOUT VERY LOUDLY!
