Mark Hanna Report Published

I see from the Aeroplane website that the latest edition contains a translation of the Spanish accident investigation report into the tragic accident that claimed the life of Mark Hanna at Sabadell in 1999. 🙁

Did the new Flypast publish any of it? I don’t see any mention on their web page.

Has anyone already read it?

It will be interesting to see what the findings were.

Cheers

Paul

A donation from the magazine (which has profired from OFMC over the years) to the following might go someway to atone:

Mark Hanna Surgical Research Fellowship
The Appeals Director-Blonde McIndoe Centre
Queen Victoria Hospital
East Grinstead
West Sussex
RH19 3DZ

At least an apology I would hope!!??

Lets not forget all the others that have passed away as well, may they all RIP.
I think the problem with this situation is that all the other reports from other aircraft incidents were published publically after the official enquirys and any coroners reports had been heard,as in the case of the Firefly and others pretty much within the anniversary of the event [commented on in local press and on t/v as well].
This one seems to have come out into the public domain a long time after the event and when people were just coming out of the immediate mourning process and getting their lives together.
I don’t know if the fact that it was’nt in the UK has a bearing on the time of the report coming out.
If Ray,members of the family and the OFMC did’nt know the report was being published and then being made public then someone should have had the decency to at least tell them.Who released the information in the first place for publication? Who decided to publish the report without telling Marks family and colleagues first?.
My condolensces to everyone, thanks Mark for many wonderful displays.

Sarah

I often come a long way to visit your collection from here in Australia. I met Mark twice and he didn’t have to talk to me but he took the time and we had a great chat about aircraft and the military etc On our last meeting even recognised me from the first time. He was an intelligent and articulate person and I will always remember him with affection and respect.

On the unplesant subject of the report I fail to see why any magazine has to comment on such matters. Reports of this type are in any case subjective and open to interpretation. Investigators draw opinions from evidence but these are mostly not facts, they are based on the interpretation of someone who was not there so are often more or less historical irrevalencies. Where some evidence of a substantive nature such as a structural failure etc is discovered this is where such a report would be relavent and worthy of circulation (although not through the pages of a magazine) so that parties operating such types could prevent similar incidents. The discussion and notification is done through official channels and is best left there for the good of all parties, idle speculation or reporting for the purposes of circulation is not a justification in my view for selective publication of the contents of such a report. Mention that the report is available at a certain official location is probably the furtherest I would ever imagine is warranted ( even then I would have notified your organisation first).

Sarah the world is a troubled place and sensationalism and intrusion on the lives of vulnerable people is the norm. I am very sorry that you had to suffer in this way and I hope that the publishers will learn the lesson of this issue and I hope that you and the rest of the family can forgive the invasion and continue in your good works.

In closing let me say that I went to Wanaka and saw the last presentation of the Bretling Fighters and as they past on the last roll I was thinking of what was and what might have been. I am proud to say that this was for me a very emotional experiance and that in itself is a great legacy for Mark

Thankyou for having the courage to post as you did

Kindest regards
John Parker

I must say I’m suprised to hear this.

I was under the impression that Aeroplane would have spoken with OFMC regarding the article and informed them of their intention to publish extracts from the report and maybe even for some comment from them as well. I always assumed that Aeroplane were in regular contact with OFMC and have a good relationship with them too.

Real shame that this has happened though, as I’ve just been reading through the latest issue and it has some great content, especially the coverage of the Wanaka show and an interesting interview with OFMC’s Nigel Lamb.

Hopefully it won’t lead to a fall out between the two parties as this would be a great pitty in my view.

Cheers

Very saddening to say this about what has evolved into an excellent publication, but this is not the first time Aeroplane have been accused of insensitivity; a picture of Pierre Hollander’s wing failing at Coventry was published by them last summer. I would have hoped they would have learned from that. Let’s hope that this episode really does hammer the lesson home.

Sarah, if it’s any consolation to you all at OFMC, I think I’m speaking for everyone here when I say Mark is still very greatly missed, and that our thoughts are with you all.

Spot on Steve.

This is a difficult time in the Hanna’s lives that is once again being brought out into a very public arena. A simple warning call from editorial staff to OFMC perhaps could have eleviated the shock and subsequent upset. Bad call Aeroplane Monthly.

A publication such as them should know better and i am shocked by the disrespect and lack of care for Ray’s feelings.

In my opinion the Aeroplane Monthly magazine editor (and staff) have certainly made a serious error of judgement concerning the release of the accident report without at least first notifying or seeking comment from either Ray Hanna himself or the Old Flying Machine Company.

Very insensitive reporting. 😡

A real thumbs down for the Aeroplane Monthly magazine!

That is totally unacceptable and disrespectful.

I pray somebody senior from the publishing company has the decency to apologise for that. That is the very least they could do.

A donation to the charity (take the hint guys) would be even better.

Dismay re Aeroplane Monthly

While recognising Aeroplane Monthly were perfectly within their rights to publish a fraction of this extensive report, it is to be greatly regretted that the editorial team there felt unable to pick up the phone to OFMC and warn them in advance.

Had we not found out through visiting this forum first, odds are the first Ray would of known about this would have been when he picked up a copy of the magazine at an airport newsagents, probably been rather chuffed that it had a picture of his beloved P-40 on the front, then sat down to find the accident report.

Nice.

We always respond freely and openly to aviation magazines when they call asking us for information and have been asked for latest updates by Aeroplane 3 or 4 times already this year. The print deadline was 6 weeks ago. They could have called and they SHOULD have called. It was thoughtless, unkind and disrespectful not to.
