Musicians…….

Sorry to ask you to comment on Drumming 🙂
…but what is it about Ringo’s drumming which draws so much criticism? I’ve long been a Beatles fan and not really noticed “Bad” drumming. Lately I’ve got all 12 Studio albums on the 2009 remaster. Again, I can’t see a problem. Groups in those days had a drummer with a 6 or 7 piece kit, his job was to assist the Bassist, do an opener or a closer and indicate rhythm change.
Buddy Rich was the best drummer of the day, but the Jazz he played devoted solo’s to him.
On the pop/rock scene only in the 70’s did the drummer become “Important” with Big-heads like Full Collins, and Rock groups using a kit with as many pieces as possible…for no apparent musical reason.

So, given the role of a drummer in a 60’s R&B/pop group, what was wrong with Ringo’s drummin?

Well I think the magic with Moon is that he actually doesen’t do the drummers job at all, but contributing with his instruments whole differently into Who songs. Thats why the sound of them has always been different from other contepories.

My comments as an extremely out of practice guitarist, and terrible when I was playing…

I would never knock Ringo, or Charlie who hasn’t been mentioned. They were/are perfect for the job they’re required to do. I never got Moon and still don’t, to me the Ox did the drummer’s job in the Who. Cream I thought were the dog’s danglies, Cozy I thought was very good but it’s got to be Bonzo.

Possibly reinforced by just having seen Led Zep on Sky Arts, recorded around the time of their first album which is the only time I saw them live.

Sh1t I’m getting old.

what about Ronnie Verrell, reckoned at the time to be the equal of Gene Krupa,

Played for Ted Heath, didn’t he? Damn fine drummer, if it’s the bloke I’m thinking of.

Ted Heath’s band was the equal of any of the US Big Bands, IMHO.

Lennon, asked if Starr was the best drummer in the world, jokingly replied, “He’s not even the best drummer in The Beatles!”

It’s nothing to do with age, I just appreciate feel more than technical ability. 😉

As the actress said to the Bishop….. 😀

You’re still young yet. Good taste will come to you with age. 😀

I am sure you said a similar thing about Jo Brand…. 😉

She’s a lot older than Paul.

Slightly prettier, though. :diablo:

1) Neil Peart
2)
3)
4) Billy Cobham
5) Simon Phillips

So many good musicians around- I am not very good at names 😀
Some great drummers mentioned so far,I always thought Steve Upton (Wishbone Ash) was pretty good .
How about Ian Paice ??

Finally someone mentions the man, Ian Paice; I’ll just add Brian Downey, and Andy Parker, the latter a very unsung hero of ’70’s rock.

Bonzo and Moon all the way, I mean, if you listen a piece of music that you heard the first time and you can tell right away thats Bonzo or Moon playing in it. With how many other drummers you can tell that? Having unique style and sound is IMO one of the most appriciated feature in any musican.
