National Service

I have used the search engine, and it would seem the question had not been posed, so, if the Country could afford it, would bringing back National Service be a good thing for the Country, and those called up?.

obviously not thaught through !!

todays youth culture involves in part guns !!

i’m not sure giving them easy access is a solution !!

sort of like sending gary glitter back to school as punnishment !!

our forces do not have the time to babysit the feckless whilst the decent ones get on !!

Not really wanting to get tangled up in this but why does your join date say March 2010? Just asking out of interest….:)

What do you mean, “How long ago was that Manchester Meet?.

There was a large meet of forumites at Manchester airport a number of years ago. Was quite good, but a lot of members have either drifted off or don’t post much these days.

Lincoln.

Not wishing to disabuse you of your notion that ThreeSpool is a shy newcomer, but has been here at least six years and has a significant posting history.

Just how long ago was that Manchester meet?

Regards,

Kev. I was going on his Welcome on the top R/H/ side of the page, and naturaly assumed he was a newcomer. What do you mean, “How long ago was that Manchester Meet?.
No idea what you mean.

Er, six years ago sounds about right. I’ve come and went with this forum, but I always somehow come back. Was even a mod at one point, but Grey Area was supreme, even back then 🙂

W1745 has the right idea, but I thought we had established that they would not be sent to the front line,(Those sent to join the Forces) who had been sentenced by a Court of Law as punishment.
We do seem to keep drifting off thread on the N.S topic.

In my eyes that is a side-effect, but it shouldn’t be the reason to force people into national service. The modern armed forces is a different animal compared to what it used to be. I very much doubt it has any spare capacity to deal with such people. There isn’t a one-size-fits all, and the problem should be attacked from many sides. Starting with schooling, enforcing proper sentencing, reduce peoples dependence of long term social benefits – just to name a few.

I understand what you are saying Jim and why you are saying it. Tough love and all that. 🙂

[QUOTE=ThreeSpool;1742074]Is this really about National Service, or how to deal with the less functional parts of modern Britain?

Is National Service the answer to rehabilitate those destined to a life of crime?

What I was getting over, but obviously not, is that I worked with young men, who on a Sat night would get tanked up, get into a fight, and use a knife, bike chain, or razor on anyone without a second thought. I have seen those same lads go into N.T. and come back, a credit to society.
I.M.H.O. it stopped them dead in their tracks of a possible life of crime.
But, my friend, read into it as to what you will.and make your own mind up.
