National Service

Are you really that naive?

You have young men and women risking their lives in places like Afghanistan (and anywhere else our muppet politicians decide to send them) on a daily basis. As has been stated they are well trained, well armed professionals dedicated to the job that they do. Would you really honestly expect them to be be willing to risk their lives serving alongside someone who is there only because they are a criminal at home? Instead of sending them overseas with the Forces why not just conscript them into the Police Service?

Good Morning Pete, Yes, I am an avid book reader, also have a Kindle, and loads of Classical, and just the opposite easy listning, ie music to relax by after a hard days work on the forum. 😀

National service need not neccessarily be all military based,after induction and square bashing there could be trade training in the various industries that no longer have apprentiships,This would benefit the country more usefully and still have people who could be used in a military context,we still have the royal elect and mech engineers dont we?

I knew where you were going, but tbh I don’t think the Army would take today’s dregs of society. If they were examined, it’s more than likely they would be medically “Not of sound mind”.
So, we’d need a different Army, with a World to run and meaningless jobs to perform. That’s a different world, long gone I’m afraid.
And, has the Army still got the absolute Basads of the Sar’nt Majors which could whip such dregs into shape? Most officers and NCO’s I meet are rather gentlemanly.
The training would have to be reviewed, I think it’s only the Para’s and the SF which are allowed to knock holes out of each other (Milling) now isn’t it?
I’d rather a massive expansion (20 fold should do in the first two years) of the Armed forces take place, creating real jobs. We’d pay for it by recreating the Empire and getting our rightful hands back on the Oil/Diamonds/foodstuffs/textiles of the World. Dream on LoL.

Laviticus and PeeDee, trying to kill two birds with one stone here.No, I missed my N.S. by a short time, however, my days were in the Teddy boys days, when flick knives, bike chains, and cut throat razors were what they carried, and which was as natural as a woman carrying makeup. Some of the older apprentices I worked with were as hard as rocks and were in the main, the dregs of society.
I have seen many of them serve their N.T. and come back for 2 or 3 months to conclude their apprentiships, you would honestly not believe thay were the same guys, and instead of being the dregs of society, they were a credit to same. I wonder if it were brought back, we would see the same results.

I slightly agree with teh above post.
Today’s Army is equipped (When it’s supplied!) with far too much complicated gear and techniques for an 18 month dilution.
When we ruled the World, we needed to put “Grunts” at every corner of it, from peeling spuds to pukka duties.
These days, there isn’t actually the work for them.

My answer is NO a most definite no,For our youth to serve something similar to the old National service and 18 month term that has no chance of ever producing an effective fighting force,just brings the saying cannon fodder to mind.
as for the youth of today,times have changed.It would be in grave danger of taking away any independence or free thinking our kids are privileged to have.

I think the Netherlands has stopped as well Pagen.

Oops hadn’t realised, had a flight on a Dutch P-3 in 2001 and some of the bods were National Service, I guess as you say that the Armed Forces are just too small to cater for it now, combined with an ever growing population.

My generation missed it (born 1965) by a long way, my father (two years in the pay corps looking for Japanese snipers in Somerset….:rolleyes:) said it made him, it also faffed his eyes doing hours of double entry book keeping by naked light bulbs !

I don’t think the forces could cope with that many soldiers etc, it would be two years of “make work”, morning shift mess up the parade ground, afternoon shift clear it up.
