National Service

It is supposed to be about National Service, or its re-introduction, but it keeps drifting off-thread.

Is this really about National Service, or how to deal with the less functional parts of modern Britain?

Is National Service the answer to rehabilitate those destined to a life of crime?

The answer is no, it is not what the armed forces are there for. I can imagine it would be just that little bit worse being out there serving with someone who really didn’t want to be there, or was forced to be there.

Ronni and Reggie were nutters in the 1st place, just think of the thousands who went through N.T and didn’t turn out like them.
As regards my only son, in all honesty an emphatic NO, but if it were Conscription, then he would have to go, and I would feel like thousands of parents, who today have sons and daughters serving on the front line, I wish them all well, and hope they all come home safe and sound.But don’t forget, they are not, or were they fools, when they signed up, and I admire them, as they knew the risks they would be taking on.

My son is well grown up but given the choice I would not hesitate to put my grandson through it.

But one question hasn’t been asked.Would you willingly put your children through National service,i have two boys 13 & 8 and as a father i wouldn’t want my lads,in that type of environment.
I know the forces are expert at bringing the best out of people,but i think half of the battle is wanting to be their in the first place.
And all the old clap trap about National service never hurting any one and being the the best thing for the youth,just remember Ronnie and Reggie served time in the Royal Fusiliers,it trained them really well……

SkyHigh. You are on the same wavelength as I, and what you have stated I agree with. I too would not expect them to be cannon fodder or sent to the front line,however, they could do jobs to help the highly skilled and trained regulars, who knows, they even may ENJOY work.

Which is, for me, that 18 months square bashing, learning about discipline, respect and loyalty might be rather more beneficial than swanning around the world having a “gap” year off. For those “less advantaged” the same criteria apply and during the 18 months all of them should learn a skill or trade. No one is suggesting they cold be sent to the “front line” but contributing to the support of the highly trained servicemen in the field they could make a useful contribution.

I’ve never been stabbed, so can I still contribute? I thought the OP had asked us about national Service…..:confused:

Pete. I was trying to tell Kev, that when one signs up for Serving in any of the armed forces,they should realise what they are letting themselves in for. I would think a person who signs on the dotted line without realising, must be a nutter. I knew what may have happened when I signed up, and sods law dictated it happened to me, and there was no Councilling those days, for being shot, stabbed, or Hospitalised. Unless you have, as they say, been there, seen it, got the “T” shirt I cannot see how folks can answere that particular question. Quite rightly, as you say, it’s about N.T. I still say, send some of the toerags who have”Possibly” been convicted of a very serious crime, be made to serve his Country, not sit in his cell watching SKY T.V. or playing on their play station etc, you know where I am coming from on this, we have gone far too soft. We should be like the Warden in charge of the prison in Arizona?. where they have nothing, and are made to do a full days work, the Warden states he has never seen the same person come back again. but I diversify from the O.P. so lets get back on that.

So, Kev, Can you tell us how you managed to get stabbbed twice?.Sounds interesting.
And did you recieve counciling.Did the Police do anything, taking it as being reported to them, (But not known)

Yes, you’re right, I believe it was someone else who suggested it could be an avenue for those convicted of anti social behaviour.

Regarding National Service in its entirety, I have spoken, in the course of various bits of research, to many ex National Servicemen and they all seem to comment positively on the experience, even a couple of guys who were wounded in Malaya, one quite seriously. Whether it would be such a positive experience today I honestly can’t say but doubt that any future Government would have the courage to implement such a plan unless in time of war.

I thought we were discussing National Service as a whole, not just for convicts?

but if we are talking about convicts, worked well enough for the USMC in Vietnam.

Conscription was just that, conscription. For every criminal that was conscripted into the Services for the Second World War there are thousands that weren’t criminals. Being forced to serve in the Armed Forces of your Country is not a suitable response to criminal behaviour.

Are you really that naive?

You have young men and women risking their lives in places like Afghanistan (and anywhere else our muppet politicians decide to send them) on a daily basis. As has been stated they are well trained, well armed professionals dedicated to the job that they do. Would you really honestly expect them to be be willing to risk their lives serving alongside someone who is there only because they are a criminal at home? Instead of sending them overseas with the Forces why not just conscript them into the Police Service?
