New Dad's Army movie. What do we think?

As soon as I heard that Bill Nighy was to play Sgt Wilson I was sold.

Mmmm – but Gemma’s not quite as “top heavy” as the georgeous Sabrina was!!

To neither versions. The thing I recall best from the originals, other than the magnificent Joyce Grenfell, was the brief appearance of Sabrina (Google her) in a nightie She left a profound impression in my adolescent psyche. As for the current crop I can only say Gemma Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah-terton :love-struck:

like mentioned already the St Trinians was a dismal remake

Who said it was dismal? Certainly not me. I enjoyed both recent outings of the awful schoolgirls. Every bit as much as the original versions.

I’ll reserve judgement until I’ve seen it.

Just as well. As far as I can make out the only person who finds Russell Brand funny is ….. Russell Brand.

Russell Brand apepars to be auditioning for the role of the new David Icke. Replace shellsuits with heroin chic and there you go.

Having read the starry cast list yesterday it didn’t cause me to revise my original comments in #3.

Hi All,
I think that it is the film industry running out of original Ideas surely with all the books that have been written there must be other funny WWII material around and like mentioned already the St Trinians was a dismal remake, so it just goes to show that reviving some old programmes as Films can not always be a good thing.
Like bazv has pointed out though a remake of an old film is a refreshing idea as long as the story follows the original and not for example of political correctness have this that and the other included. I liked the part in the film were John Goodman has the fire retardant dumped on him by Richard Dreyfuss’s replacement.:D

Yup, great casting. 🙂

If there is a weak link, it could be the scriptwriter: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0566100/?ref_=fn_al_nm_1

The directors past work isn’t great either, with a notable exception being Dorian Gray (2009): http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0662529/#director

But even if it only has a little of the magic that made the original so entertaining, it will be good. 🙂

Agreed. Looks really promising

Now it needs a great, and sympathetic, script

I’m going to sit on the fence on this one.

The last time I was all in favour of a film being made and most on here were not…….Red Tails, they were right.

…not doing that again.

One remake that is better than the original was Spielbergs ‘ Always’ ( Richard Dreyfuss, Holly Hunter, Brad Johnson, John Goodman ) …a remake of ‘A guy named Joe’ (1943) [ Spencer Tracy ].

Spielberg and Dreyfuss had wanted to make it for years and the cast really seemed to enjoy it.

Fire bombers with A26,PBY etc and of course Holly Hunters dress ; )

Well, maybe not a ‘re-make’ in the traditional sense but certainly a good stand-alone movie…

…and remember the library scene: “The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexander Dumb-Ass!”

What about the re-makes that (most) people don’t realise are ‘re-makes’…

…how about ‘The Shawshank Redemption’ as a remake of ‘The Count of Monte Cristo’?

I certainly didn’t realize that. I thought it was based on Stephen King’s story “Rita Heyworth and the Shawshank Redemption”. There are certainly similarities between ‘The Shawshank Redemption’ and ‘The Count of Monte Cristo’ but a remake? I’m not so sure.

Interestingly (according to wiki anyway) there was originally a second movie planned, but it never came to fruition.
