Next gen Games consoles

So which ones would we like to buy, if any?
The contenders are:
xbox 360
Playstation 3
Nintendo Wii (formerly revolution)

The Xbox 360 currently retails for around $199 for the most basic system.
The PS3 weighs in at a hefty $499, €394 each. (starting price)

Personally, I would opt for the xbox360 on the grounds of cost, exclusive games and so that i can play my original xbox games.

Does anyone know what the price of the wii is likely to be on release?

I’ve heard anywhere from three to four hundred dollars right now for us in Canada. But that is subject to change. At this point, we haven’t heard anything concrete about this system here in cold country but as soon as I hear anything, I will let you guys know what they have decided on the price front. Cheers!

Yeah, but nobody really thought BETAMAX would fall on its face either 😀

At any rate, here’s why they both really fail as a DVD medium:

If the high def DVD is out of the picture, it all comes back to price…and we know who wins there.

Now, if people don’t latch onto Blue-Ray as the “next-gen medium”, the PS3 will be an abject failure within two years.

With PS3 being used as a launch vehicle for BlueRay I hardly see this happening. This along with movie studios like 20th Century Fox and Disney putting their weight behind blue ray I don’t see it failing anytime soon.

The problem with Blue-Ray is that, for example, a Blue-Ray DVD player costs about $1000 right now:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7763823&type=product&id=1142288677966

Now, if people don’t latch onto Blue-Ray as the “next-gen medium”, the PS3 will be an abject failure within two years. A lot of people have stopped making UMD videos for the PSP already, what if Blue-Ray HD DVDs fail to sell and Blue-Ray goes down the drain?

That’s also the genius of Microsoft’s HDVD add-on due out this fall. You get the best of all worlds.

I was saddened to hear that Halo 3 is only available for the X360. I hope that the rights will one day be available for the PS3!

Not in a million years. Plus, the existance of Halo 3 in early 2007 is going to be a major player when the PS3 comes out during the holidays this year. The XBox 360 will have been out for a year, so Microsoft could conceivably drop the price by $50 for the holidays. Everyone who wants to get into Halo 3 will have to have one anyway, and a price drop makes the 360 very appealing to someone on the fence as to which system to buy. The PS3 will then be at least $150 more. Anyway, back ot Halo 3…when Halo 2 came out a while back, it made around $140 million in sales the first day. That’s an entertainment industry record, not just a video game record. The existance of Halo 3 will surely be on the minds of holiday shoppers. To think otherwise would be unintelligent given the juggernaut that is The Franchise.

You’ve to consider the fact that PS3 is coming with a blue ray drive as well as a integerated HDD. Both of which (HD DVD in MS’s case) are optional on Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and if bought will increase the aggregate cost of the console.
PS3 is a bargain at its current prices for the functionality its offering and since I already own a PSP and a PS2 I’d prefer PS3 over any other next gen console :).

That’s what I’ve been saying to a lot of people but they still tend to think the X360 is the better platform. I guess we will all have to wait and see what happens when the PS3 is finally released.

Halo 3 will be outstanding from a visual standpoint. Everything you see in the game will actually be rendered this time. For example, if you see a city in the background, a bunch of skyscrapers and whatnot, guess what? You can (if you want to waste the time) actually walk out there and mess around in the city! That’s awesome. And I still can’t get over the detail in the preview trailer. Given that it was done in real-time using the in-game graphics engine, DAMN.

I never said you shouldn’t get a PlayStation 3. It will be a nice console if you have the funds for it, and if you have the right TV. You just happen to be in that select group.

I just think that the Wii offers things you cannot get anywhere else, and that people who might have snubbed Nintendo through the GameCube and maybe even N64 days should reconsider and give it a try.

You’re allowed to own more than one console. I own a GameCube and PS2 right now, and I’ve been very happy with both of them.

The problem is that anyother console aside from the X360 and the PS3 are automatically forgotten as soon as you start talking about those two. After all, they are the benchmark in this industry. I am very fortunate to be working for the company I work for. Otherwise, like many of you, I would have to wait until I had saved a great deal of money to be able to afford either one of them and the television I wish to have.

SOC, the Sony I am Looking to buy is just a regular rear projection Grand Wega. Nothing fancy but I will say that it is just about the best television you can buy without going into the higher end Plasma screens. I will run me about thirty-five hundred Canadian although I might be able to get it for a little cheaper if I buy the model on display at work.

PS3 in a year or so, when the ‘as usually’ over inflated prices come down!!!!!

Over-inflated? Not even CLOSE. An XBox 360, for example, actually costs around $700, but it’s sold at a loss purposely.

how many of you actually own an HDTV of a good size (i.e. at least 27 inches)?

I’ve got a 52 inch Mitsubishi, does that count? 😀

As I am about to buy a 55in Sony Grand Wega and set it up for HD, I know that with a little patience, I will have a great gaming system hopefully by my next birthday.

Is that a plasma screen or a DLP TV? Plasmas have pretty much solved the burn-in issue by now, but they still have an issue with the screen door effect when viewing things at high framerates. I’ve got a Mitsubishi 1080P DLP TV, and it is fabulous, with absolutely no graphics anomalies whatsoever. You can get better blacks out of a DLP than a plasma as well.

Anyway, my vote is for the XBox 360. If BlueRay doesn’t catch on (think BETAMAX video tapes), the PS3 is in a world of trouble. The XBox 360 is also backwards compatible with most previous XBox games (most, as games duplicated on the 360 like Madden 2006 aren’t accounted for, and games like that which are replaced by newer versions aren’t included either, like Madden 2004 or 2003).

For an idea of just how stunning the graphics in the XBox 360 can be, check this out:

http://www.bungie.net/News/TopStory.aspx?link=Halo3Announcement

All of that was rendered in real-time using the game’s graphics engine. What that means is that yes, the game will look just like what you see here.

At the end of the day this is really a fanboy decision. Your best bet, due to the costs involved, is to go for the platform which offers the best exclusive titles to suit your tastes. I’m big into Halo, so I got an XBox 360.

You know PII, you bring about a few good points but at this stage, I’ll be able to get my PS3 console with my staff rebate or even free or charge if I wait three or four months and go through some level of Sony training. I had an interesting chat with a few mates at work about the various consoles which are either on the market right now or will be released in the coming second half of the year. The Nintendo Wii was mentioned a few times and as much as it does offer many advantages over the other consoles, price being the most important one, each of us came to the conclusion that in the long run, the PS3 will be the machine of choice. As I am about to buy a 55in Sony Grand Wega and set it up for HD, I know that with a little patience, I will have a great gaming system hopefully by my next birthday.

Personally I think you guys should reconsider the new Nintendo console. None of you have mentioned it, and I think that’s a very sad thing. It will totally change the way video games are played, and you’ll be able to have gaming experiences on it that you can’t have on the other two. In addition, it’s price will be much more reasonable (especially compared to the PS3).

I realize graphics are somewhat important, but how many of you actually own an HDTV of a good size (i.e. at least 27 inches)? Without that, you can’t fully experience what the PS3 is offering. Additionally you’ll have to spend 600 bucks to get the PS3 version that’s worth having as well as 60 dollars a game.

With the Nintendo Wii you get a much cheaper price, games that likely wont’ exceed the current 50 dollar mark, a virtual console where you can download over 20 years of games from NES, SNES, N64, Sega Genesis, and Turbo Grafx 16. The online service (now called Nintendo Wi-Fi connection and also used by the Nintendo DS handheld) is free (unlike Xbox Live), and of course there is the unique controller that allows for so many possibilities not previously thought of.

The graphics by the way aren’t even that bad. When running in 480p you still get some very clear pictures and some very solid looking games.

Additionally, a large number of really awesome games have been listed as being in the works for the Wii. They include Mario, Smash Bros., Legend of Zelda, Metroid Prime 3, Call of Duty 3, Resident Evil (title name hasn’t been announced yet), Red Steel, Madden 07, etc.

I’m a big Nintendo fan, and if anyone has any questions or doubts about the Wii please ask me because I want as many people as possible to buy one because I think you’re missing out if you don’t (and no I don’t work for Nintendo or have any affiliation with them aside from being one of their many consumers).

Give it a chance, and I’ll be willing to bet that in November when it comes out and you get to play it you’ll be glad you did.

That’s my rant anyway. I hope people read it and think about it.

Whats betting the codes for chipping the 360s are all over the net just before the release date of PS3,when you’ve been to the seminar shadow let us know what the rep said and how it went.

Will do. Not sure when this is all supposed to happen but I imagine it will be within the next couple of months. I regularly talk to both the Sony and Microsoft reps when they come in to check on our displays and I feel as though Microsoft doesn’t seem to be overly concerned with PS3’s arrival. On the other hand, the Sony rep seems to be overly confident with the final layout of this new system they will release in November. I asked if there would be further delays due to further problems with this Blue Ray tech and so far, he maintained they’re happy with what they now have. Is it just confidence in their product or is he trying to hide something? Either way, I can’t wait to see what they’ve come up with.

PS3 because of the back compatibility brand loyalty hay I’m fickle and blue ray its the future you know………lol

I agree with you! The PS3 will find a nice home when they become available here in North America on 17 November. Just in time for Christmas. Blue Ray is the way of the future but they first have to complete perfecting the technology. I am scheduled to attend a seminar on the PS3 and its Blue Ray tech. I can’t wait to hear what the Sony rep will have to say about this!
