So what do we make of Fred and Harold Panton’s letter in Flypast regarding Lancaster NX611, they say that they have “no immediate plans to go airworthy, but it is ,we beleive possible” and “She might just fly one day”.
This is a turnaround on their last statement where they said something like ‘no plans whatsoever to get NX611 airworthy’ and ‘we are happy to have her as a working yet non airworthy memorial’.
Am i just being optimistic and reading too much between the lines or do others sense a second Lanc airworthy in the UK in the not to distant future.I appreciate that main spar is a big issue, but anything is possible with finance, planning and the right approach with the authorities.
Phil.

I shall have to agree with pauls thoughts on how good it would be to see some of the other bomber types running their engines up.
We have a Lanc flying and a few in museums, but where is a Hampden, Stirling, Whitley.
Let the nation see what one of these look like close up, even better taxing. They don’t need to fly but just to come alive.

Steve
Yes they really were going to bring her over last year and she was going to based at Coningsby from end of May to July 6 to 8 weeks in total but it all fell through at the last minute, but as Peter says it will never happen now, but one can hope.

I seem to remember the Lancaster flying into North Weald at the old Fighter meet with BF 109’S Black 6 on one wing and Black 2 operated by O F M C on the other,i’m certain i had it on video i took there but i’m trawling through them to find it,maybe someone else has some pictures of them, cheers:) [/B][/QUOTE]
I would have loved to see that at least it would have been something different

That’s a shame, but I can understand their logic. I imagine that we’d be quite miffed if the roles were reversed and we lost our Lanc from the UK circuit for an extended period of time.

never happen
Steve.
You will never see it ime afraid. After they got her flying, they did a cross canada tour and promptly lost one merlin and a complete head assembly of another. They used up alot of parts and now they have a rule that the lanc is not to be away from base over a 24 hr period so that someone visiting can always see her in the hangar once a day

The CWH were seriously thinking of bringing her over then? Now that would have been something to see! Any chance of the idea ever being resurrected?

Where does the info that BBMF will not fly with anyone come from!!!. Since I have been on the flight there has been several occasions when we have flown with others
1) The five ship over North Weald with 2 Bf109’s on one side of the Lanc and PZ & PM on the other.
2) Spit formation over the Solent
3) AB & Black 6 at Fairford
4) Mustang with Lanc for film work
5) Any calender that our a/c appear on. John Dibbs etc…
All one has to do is ask and meet for a face to face briefing, the biggest disapiontment for me was when the CWH Lanc cancelled because she was going to be based at Coningsby and fly at several events with PA474.
Lastly we have 3 Lanc crews

I could be wrong here Lancman, but in general aviation terms it is the t/o roll that is the longer. You always have to be cautious of landing somewhere that is short but you can get into and then finding it impossible to get out of.

How many crews have the BBMF got for the lancaster? if they have more than 1,couldnt they fly the other lanc when they want to formation?
i would love to see 2 lancs flying. I was wondering, i heard that if the lanc flies, the would like to get something else to fill the void. I was wondering how many Lancs are currently in the UK? Isnt there one at Sandcroft? couldnt that or the stirling project be based there? couldnt they be restored to taxi?

Never mind those noisy Nimrod things, I’d like to see Chatters come back as Bomber Leader or even OC BBMF one day. 😀

Hi everyone just come in from work aagain to have my daily fix of aviation. Couldn’t resist following this thread right from the beginning. Like the rest of you I too would like to see her fly but not as much as I would like to see two Lancs in the air together.
I can’t remember who raised the point about why the BBMF won’t fly with non BBMF aircraft but whoever it was absolutely hit the nail on the head, in fact the BBMF actually publicly stated a few years ago that the decision was made because they are not sure of the quality of the pilots they would be flying alongside.

First time I’ve seen her run at night too, an real thought provoking sight, certainly worth the trip.
Next night run is in a fortnight I believe.

peter – Thanks for that ! I a looking for bits to make the rear end of KB976 at bit more substancial at Aeroventure – hence the interest.

thourght I’d let you know that Just Jane looked superb tonight doing the night time taxi thing.. great.. i’ve seen her run a few times during the day but its very different in the dark.. really does give some small inkling of what it must’ve been like, just standing there imagining the noise multiplied by 50 or so, the glow of the lights, the exhaust flames, then you go inside the hangar and read about the 19 year guy who joined-up, completed his training and was killed on active duty in the space of 14 months..
anyway, on a really positive note, there were lots of people there tonight which all helps to keeping her going…
Neil.

Mike and David
MIke I remember asking Ian when he was overlooking at out lanc and he said there was just enough runway to operate a lanc safely from.
David,
I am not sure if they got the fins from fm118 yet but I can find out. I think they are going to display them as a diorama of a scrapped lanc or something… Basically they want the atailplanes for the elevator mounts as the ones on our lancaster are seized.

Peter – Do you guys now have the fins from FM118 and if so what are your intentions with them???
By: Peter - 27th September 2003 at 17:48
EK runway
Mike if you look at the video of the iarcraft doing the fast axis on the runway, you can see that the overall condition is quite good. Yes it is on the nighbors property..
