Hello Giel,
During my travels after leaving the army in 74 I wanted to work around Europe as I also liked ski-ing and worked down in Garmisch in Bavaria as a ski mechanic ,”basicly”(Ski rental) and learnt a little German.

After a spell there I moved up towards Holland for a couple of years and enjoyed my stay there and learnt a little dutch.I’m by no means fluent and took the opportunity to write a little on the thread to you as it was so novel to hear from someone over in the Benelux area.

I will try and look out for some more old photos when I get the time but work has picked up for me this week in my trucker job.Thanks for the interest and hows the air show scene in Belgium at the moment?.Send some photos to the thread if you have any from old shows from your part of the world,.Regards.

Thanks again for the feed back on the the other thread,the C135 photo was taken a while back at one of waddington airshow weekends.Steve you couldnt do a bit of research and find out from one source or another if the RAAF are going to send an F 111 over this year to Waddington airshow.

As you may well have read on the other threads we were looking forward to it coming over but there seems to be no clarity on what we might expect to happen where the show is concerned and if it might appear or not.All the best doon under Hinnee.:p:):) Cheers man noo its back tu thu Broon.:):rolleyes:

Quite right, it is definately a different show. By the way, I know the E coded Varsity was not in the static at Tangmere, because I have a full list, with photos, from a friend who went.

Hi gents,
I’m certain the two T-33’s are different machines.If you look closely at the one in the Hunter pic,the ‘US Air Force’ titling is written further forward,and ends just under the pilot’s windscreen.The titling finishes under the mid point of the canopy in the other photo.

I have to admit I thought the T33 was the same one in both photo’s as well but its clearly different aircraft in the background !

No Damien, I’m afraid not. There was no Varsity coded E at the Tangmere show, and the sun’s shining!

As promised, here is some more info. The Valiant BK.1 is XD866 of 138 Squadron, and was shot at Tangmere’s Battle of Britain display. So too was the T-33, which belonged to 48 TFW Lakenheath.

I was a bit off track with the Hunter, XJ627 was actually the machine used by Martin-Baker, sorry about that. I have not been able to track down which show that shot was taken at.

17 September 1960 was Battle of Britain At Home Day, so they were all taken at one of the shows that day. If I was at home instead of at the office I could look it up in my database and tell you where, but it will have to wait until the New Year I’m afraid. I went to the show at Halton on that day, so I can definately rule that out!

Hunter XJ615 was used for a short time by Martin-Baker at Chalgrove, and was intended as a replacment for the Meteor T.7 for ejector seat tests. However, it proved to be unsuitable and was written off not long afterwards as I recall.

Thanks alot for the info Ant, I have to amit I was trying to guess what colour the hunter was painted, it would be nice to see a colour photo of it. I’m still none the wiser as to the location though.

Hi again Plazz,
True to form,I can’t find the picture I was talking about,but I have found comfirmation that XJ615 was painted dark blue with a white spine.Rather than being the one-off scheme as I said earlier,this colour scheme was also used on the second two-seater prototype XJ627.
Similar schemes were also used on later Hunter demonstrators,with the blue being replaced by either red (G-APUX,export T.72 demonstrator) or bright green (XE531,one-off T.12 used for trials by the A&AEE at Boscombe Down and written off March 1982,pic below).

Cheers Plazz,nice pictures mate!As far as I know,the identities are spot on.The Hunter is a particularly interesting shot as this machine was the company’s demonstrator and wears a special one-off colour scheme,which I think was either dark blue or bright green with a white spine.I’ve got a colour profile drawing somewhere and I could dig it out to confirm the colour scheme if you’d like?
