Am I the only one who finds this Olympic hysteria and obsession just too much to take?
I am not a sports person so I never like the blight of the Olympics every 4 years. But now that it is in London the British media, especially the BBC, seem to think everyone is obsessed like they are.
BBC News TV channel is not showing genuine news, just sports-news, and I have to thank the gods for al Jazerra TV news or I would not know what is really happening in the world.
Sport is not news, it is just a game. Not everyone cares a jot about who wins some dumb game. So what if someone can cycle the fastest, or run the fastest. And what has football got to do with the original ideals of the Olympics? It is all nonsense.
Arrrggggg…..

Nice cross country bike course on today…. Haven’t they heard that they are supposed to pull out and burn Ragwort as it kills the likes of horses when they feed on it… And the blooming place was awash with the stuff.

A foul mouthed person who thinks he is a comedian and not a very good role model considering his recent addiction, will be participating in the closing ceremony this is taking the P*ss.

Having seen the BMX track, I now know why our roads are so terrible, I mean talk about bumps, surely they could have got it smoother than that. ๐

C’mon folks, only a couple of days to go……and that dreadful ‘festival’ of the attention seeking egotistical participants will be over. However, I shall not be giving up my newly rediscovered pastime of reading a good book. I thank the Olympic choked media for that.:)
BTW Sarah, I’ve enjoyed your thread, even if others have not;)

In response to VeeOne’s last post, I see where you’re coming from and I was a little hesitant about posting this, questioning the whole “Do I? Don’t I?” thing.
But I do see where you’re coming from and yes – each to their own opinion of course, but I have a genuine question to ask and without meaning to sound pedantic about it.
Do you genuinely still feel like a “hater” to the fact that Olympic Games can inspire a person? Or is that something you think is good?

I’m paying extra coucil tax, my favourite 2000 year old park has been dug up, my travel to work has been disrupted and is crowded, I can’t take my bike on a train at weekends to get out into the country.
The only thing I have to like about the Olympics is Murray winning the tennis. I’m not a sports fan, I’m built for comfort not speed and agility, but so many people said a Briton could never beat Jokowotsit and Federer.

In the new age of digital television, surely the BBC could have used another channel for Olympics coverage instead of totally disrupting its main one.
Well, apart from BBC1, BBC2 & BBC Three, there are 24 other Olympic Channels. Plus another 24 in HD.
Thank goodness for Sky News, to find out what is going on in the rest of the world.

It’s not the running, jumping and throwing things that annoys me, it’s the ridiculous sponsorship deals. Sponsor companies include Pampers nappies, Coca Cola, Macdonalds and Gillette – presumably endorsed by fat, rotten toothed, burger guzzling, hirsute, incontinent slobs whose habitual mode of dress is the tracksuit/trainers combo?
All that’s missing from the sponsor list is Silk Cut and Special Brew.

I’m not a sports fan, but I have enjoyed watching the odd event over the last week or so. I even went to see the torch pass through our town, and will be going along to watch an event this week.
But on the other hand I do think that the TV coverage is completely over the top. In the new age of digital television, surely the BBC could have used another channel for Olympics coverage instead of totally disrupting its main one. Although I don’t watch much television anyway, and so can easily find something else to do for a couple of weeks, I sympathise with non-sports-fans whose viewing has been put on hold for the duration (especially straight after Wimbledon fortnight).
It hasn’t been such a disaster (so far) as many had predicted, but I am seriously concerned about the legacy of debt the games will leave. This has been the experience of many previous host nations.

I am surprised that Tangmere1940 should have to defend this (my) thread from all those who have come over from the olympic lover’s thread to attack this one. Arthur Pewsey should be kept muzzled in his own olympic-thread back yard!
Why should Tangmere1940’s views even be considered as a subject for banning? What the hell is going on here? Political Correctness really Pisses me off. If my views are not welcome on this forum PLEASE BAN ME because I wouldn’t want to be part of any alleged forum that wishes to control people’s views.
I hate the obsessive and compulsive need to fixate excusively on sports and those elite sportsmen and women who must be madly OCD to have gotten to the top of that pointless interest. Sport is ok. Obsessive behaviour is not.
What is it about you guys that makes you need to try to criticize people who don’t agree with your viewpoint? I decided to start this thread RATHER THAN put my views on your Olympic lovers thread as I wanted to respect those views that love sport and the olympics. But why can’t you respect MY VIEWS?
Live and let live, boys. Respect other peeps’ viewpoints. When you don’t allow others to have their own viewpoints – well, that’s how wars start!

Lots of people are interested in sport and why not? It provides good news among death, war, destruction, doom and gloom. If that’s where you want to be then fair enough but many don’t.
Sport is the same as art , hobbies, reading books etc. Ultimately useless in terms of survival of the species but done for the pure enjoyment of it. If other people can take pleasure in your achievement then what is wrong with that?
Arthur. Whilst I do agree with you, wouldn’t be great if other peoples hobbies and interests got some coverage in the media! ๐ I know that a lot of people in this country enjoy sport, but why doesn’t anyone else get their own supplements, TV channels and large chunks of newspapers devoted to their interests and pastimes? Ok, maybe I’m being a bit tongue in cheek here and unrealistic as I don’t suppose anyone would want to read a 14 page knitting supplement in the Sun or watch a Sky TV train spotting channel…or would they? Who knows?
As a keen modeller, maybe if the BBC brought back Modelworld with the wonderful Bob Symes, I’d feel as if my interests were being catered for after all.

Steve

Paul’s Olympic Ring image reminded me about the chap who said to his good lady “I think I’ll use the gold one tonight”….she replied: “Why don’t you use the silver one and come second for a change?”….!!
That is probably far too risque for here, but maybe one or two will get a smile out of it before it gets modded-out….or I get banned! ๐

In the run up to these games, the organisers have been going on about how good these games would be for London.
It doesn’t seem to be the case so far, with hotels and restaurants not
noticing any significant increase in trade. With many saying takings are
actually down.
We also had to suffer incessant horror stories about how London would experience total traffic gridlock; now that it hasn’t happened we get the masterstroke switch to how it’s killing trade. Pity we don’t have a yawning smiley, for these non-subjects.

I don’t hate the games, and certainly don’t hate London.
I do hate the silly American TV coverage of these games.
What a bunch of boneheads. They have lowered themselves to the MTV/”reality” show level.
They started Friday evenings coverage with a 30 minute sob story-feature about the history of US female gymnastics….
Really, NBC is getting worse all the time.

I don’t hate the Olympics at all, why? Because I’ve rediscovered the enjoyment of reading a good book:) A big thank you to all involved, especially the media, that has been ramming the event down our throats for what seems like forever The North Korean TV does the same thing with its coverage of ‘The Dear Leader……I know…….I’ve been there….I’ve seen it for real…now where’s me bloody reading glasses;)

Arithmetic not your strongest subject is it.
…but I suppose 63 people would have had quite a result, whilst leaving the rest of the population a tad miffed they didn’t get their ยฃmillion!
Olympic gold, indeed.
