Only in America

AN American inventor wants to patent a way of sending a message from beyond the grave — a video-screen tombstone.
The device is the brainchild of Robert Barrow of Burlingame, California, the British weekly New Scientist reports in Saturday’s issue.
The hollow headstone houses a computer with a hard disc or memory chip that allows the deceased to relay a video message via a flat LCD touch screen.
“They might relate their life stories… or worse: they could confess to lurid indiscretions,” the British weekly says.
The tombstone would draw its electrical supply from the cemetery’s lighting system, and to avoid disturbing other visitors, people can listen to the message through wireless headphones.
Electronically-enhanced tombstones are not new, however.
Other inventions include a gravestone that displays a collection of the deceased’s photographs, alongside tributes from that person’s friends.

But that sort of thing is well known – you’ve told us about it on this thread at least twice.
So, coupled with the lack of ammo, and therefore the need to bring it with you, plus the various different calibres required, it would appear to be easier (if we were planning a raid on a gun show, which we are not, and not this side of the Atlantic either) to just ram-raid the entrance or fire exit with your own guns and ammo in a 4×4. No dodgy unfireable guns, no wrong sized ammo, no trying to sneak past security, just the full blown element of surprise. Don’t forget that the terrorist attackers won’t be weighed down with any thoughts of survival since, for them, it is a suicide mission – unlike all those show-goers and the intervening police – so their main requirement would be to generate shock and terror through death, destruction, and media headlines.

If there were some incredibly stupid, morons, (I do not call them terrorists as they would strike terror in no one) who wanted to be sure to commit suicide in an area where they knew they would have an armed opponent and massive response, yes, then what you describe may happen.
All goblin shooters dead and some law enforcement persons possibly dead. (Dealers may have loaded firearms at non-NRA gunshows so the return fire would become massive in short order.)
At an NRA event the law enforcement is so high, depending on location, they may or may not get close enough to not be on the defense from the get-go .

I do have to admit you have raised my curiosity as to how the press would report such an attack, regardless of results, although I can guess at what one might be:

NRA cannot defend itself against terrorist attack. President calls for stricter gun laws.

Anytime anyone picks up a firearm at a gunshow their are many, many eyes on that person, whether the seller, the Law, or simply others attending.
Guns must now be made temp. inoperable or they do not get in. For some one to start the task of making a firearm capable to chamber a round means his/her chance of success is some where between none and next to none.
BUT, I MUST add, at some gun shows knives are also sold and to stop one from grabbing one and start slashing, the odds are that people would be hurt and possibly killed.

‘Might injure someone’? I like your optimism but unless the defence is forewarned and ready then the attackers initially hold all the cards; the shock of being under attack and panic from those trapped and under fire won’t help. There will be deaths. —- 😀 Anytime anyone picks up a firearm at a gunshow their are many, many eyes on that person, whether the seller, the Law, or simply others attending.

Nope, never heard of her – but she certainly seems to be more along your line of thinking than mine… —- No she is a fairly well known liberal journalist who vocally hates and insults conservatives and firearms, very your style.

You mean they are not even a little bit like the KKK, with hoods, secret handshakes and burning crosses? How disappointing.

You have made it exceptionally clear you have no idea of how the NRA operates, or how any gun shows operate.

Curses, and I thought we’d all been rather subtle…

Of course they could try to do a forced invasion, in which, some law enforcement officials would possibly be killed but the armed invaders would be shot dead long before they reached the door.

Very optimistic of you.
I too would like to think that an attack by armed attackers would be beaten off by the police, but since it wouldn’t be out of keeping to own a gun and practise using it there is a chance that any attack could be carried out by people who can actually use their weapons, which could be dangerous for all.

Now if they were truly diabolical and came with cartridges in their pockets, came in mass numbers, and were able to chamber a round or two before being clubbed to death or apprehended they might injure some one but that is all.

Ah I see you are not totally ill informed.

Well, it would make sense: you don’t put dangerous weapons in the hands of bragging, testosterone saturated nutsos unless you are asking for trouble.

Witnessed a drive-by here the other day. A blacked-out and lowered Ka screamed up to someone in the street, the window was wound down and a voice screamed “******!” before they screeched off again, keeping under the 30mph limit allowed in towns. It was carnage.

A drive-by swearing? How utterly British…

You never been to a NRA show, they do not have secret gun meetings, and you blatantly know nothing of the security there, or any gun show in the U.S.

NRA officials meet at NRA headquarters or have business meeting like any other business in proper surroundings. (There is a fifty yard indoor shooting range just behind the office headquarters — EEWWWW, that is scary kids)
Your rather childish dream scenario sounds as if you are a bit annoyed your fantasy of the NRA and U.S. gun owners is only your fantasy.

All weapons are checked by law enforcement, and made temporarily inoperable, at any U.S. gun show so go on with your obtuse scenario but that does not make it any less obtuse if that makes you feel better.

You may answer my question above if you wish and I have enjoyed the bizarre responses but enough is enough.

Laughing, it gets better all the time doesn’t it! No-one can get into a gun-nut meeting with a loaded gun because anyone trying do do so would be shot dead before they made it inside. —-Does that disappoint you?

If they load up inside they’d be brutally bludgeoned, presumably by unloaded weapons? I love Americans logic.

I think I should invest in some really good cameras and set up an NRA ‘Bring and Die’ event. Charge a whopping great entry fee to the brave and stupid and sell the DVD of gun porn for a premium price to all the cowardly and stupid. Limit everyone to a nominal 20,000 rounds of small arms ammunition for one long and one short, two projectile launchers, whether AT or AP type, and a dozen grenades (choice of Frag or WP). It’d be ace.

Now, what would I chose…umm…assuming I had to participate…better stick to old school and the stuff I already know – a Jimpy, a pair of 66’s, a Browning Hi-Power and (if I really have to) some L2 grenades though I hated those damned things anywhere near me. Think I’ll sit in a corner behind some stuff and pop the Jimpy on an SF mount so I can keep my head down. I suppose a traditional Vickers would be better suited…

Gee. More gun laws. So maybe if they had been in place it would be potentially difficult for would-be terrorists to purchase guns. But you don’t believe in that, do you. More guns, yes? —– As so far reported the guns were purchased through a straw-man, which is already a Federal offense.

Much as I see the humour of gunmen at a gun men’s meeting I doubt that they would be allowed to carry their weapons into such conferences so that any terrorists would be disarmed as well.

Ah I see you are not totally ill informed.

It would be carnage as their dream came true and every backwoodsman in the room dragged out his piece and started blasting in a bid to be a hero. I’d guess there would be at least five self-inflicted leg or bollock wounds, a couple of dozen NRA members shot by their chums and a single terrorist dying from choking on laughter as he watched the fun.

I do wish they’d close this thread.

What a lovely idea. Close a thread just because you are having a hard time on it, or because you deem it worthless. Such a shame that this is a discussion forum, but if you do not wish to discuss this topic then I’m sure another one will be along shortly (that you can disagree with, I’m sure).

(when he’s not busy proselytizing for atheism).

Ah, moaning about people not believing in your invisible friend. How far will you go to force people to believe – suicide bombings or hacking off prisoners heads like the other fundamentalists?

We have a bunch of posters long on passion and short on understanding…so it’s just another excuse to slag on the US.
I’m about ready to cancel my FlyPast subscription just because they play host to this nonsense.

So if they don’t close this ‘nonsense’ and agree with you you will cancel your subscription? Such an empty threat.
Why not explain why absolutely nothing can be done to prevent such massacres taking place (standard domestic or terrorism, using freely available legally purchased weapons) or what you feel needs to be done to prevent them in the future. Or you could just walk away…

Unlike politicians I shed no bs crocodile tears as I am as concerned about their lives, as they are about mine.
It is a shame this happens and worse politicians try to use sorrow of others for political purposes, but such is the way of men.

I do not engage in the sad talk lie the liberals in this country pretend to have for the victims.

If you think flowers, candles, sad and self-righteous talk actually amounts to anything engage in that task but symbolism over substance is just political bs at its worst.

If I thought you cared I wouldn’t have said anything, but I didn’t so I did.
It is not about being a politician, it is about being human and being concerned for those killed or injured and relieved that it was not us.

I would almost think some of you work for Pres. Obama as his speech from his Oval Office tonight about how to deal with Islamic terrorism was for him say we need more gun laws, brilliant.
Yesterday, rather than go out to San Bernardino and speak with the families, he went to visit Gabrielle Gifford, the former congress woman who wants more gun laws.
That is going to put fear in the hearts of terrorists.

Gee. More gun laws. So maybe if they had been in place it would be potentially difficult for would-be terrorists to purchase guns. But you don’t believe in that, do you. More guns, yes?

Much as I see the humour of gunmen at a gun men’s meeting I doubt that they would be allowed to carry their weapons into such conferences so that any terrorists would be disarmed as well.
Should I threaten to withdraw my subscription at the thought of such an idea being posed?

…in reality, this year there 29 mass killings and of those 22 were shootings.

Only 22 mass shooting in a year, say one every two weeks? Hardly worth getting excited about. Doesn’t leave all that many parent-less children, or parents grieving over the loss of a child. Nothing compared to the fun of owning a firearm and pretending you are Rambo defending the good ole U S of A against the raghead hordes as part of the well organised militia.

A price worth paying says I.

Good idea Snapper, lets see a mass shooting at an NRA meeting,

It would be carnage as their dream came true and every backwoodsman in the room dragged out his piece and started blasting in a bid to be a hero. Nah, a very happy life actually: I don’t have to worry about people with a right to bear arms and without the intelligence to bear them.

…oh, just for added interest I’ve stared down the barrels of an Uzi and an AK in a previous life, both occasions in dusty countries, wielded by scary people and both times were after I’d left the army. I’ve been shot on a beach by a twattish kid with an air rifle while fishing too and I’ve been threatened regularly in my job and in the street. I just hope there’s a real big mass shootout at an NRA meeting. that’d be awesome, hundreds of minced-up gun supporters smeared all over the walls and hosed off the floors. Brilliant. Would love to see the justification for that one.

Good idea Snapper, lets see a mass shooting at an NRA meeting, I’m all for it if it would make a difference, sadly it wouldn’t, just the opposite, the population would rush out and buy more guns.
I think I may go to the USA and open a gun store…. By this time next year, I could be a Millionair Rodders.

JB – despite sympathising with much of what you said closing the thread is not the answer because another would quickly spring up to replace it.

None of us has to read the threads which we don’t like and posters whose views irritate or antagonise can always be “ignored”.
