Pink Floyd 4th August 1980 (NOT OT!) Spitfire related

In this months GQ magazine and as reported in last nights Evening Standard, they listed the 10 best concerts ever….

Number 10 was

“Pink Floyd 4th August 1980 at Earls Court – It says ‘indoor Spitfire fighter planes, a monstrous teacher puppet, giant inflatable pigs and 160ft cardboard wall that crashed down for a spectacular finale’ “

OK so that has to be for ‘The Wall’ tour but what were the Spitfire fighter planes all about.. FSM’s Inflatable ones ?? Can any aging rocker (and warbird nuit) who was there expalin. Or prehaps Dave Gimour inhabits this place and can be me the low down (who was 14 at the time and missed it) though I still needed my ‘educashion’

I don’t know about the Stearman, the biplane that David Gilmour owned was a Staggerwing.

Does anyone remember an Ultravox video that featured Spitfires, it would have been the early 80’s
———————————————————————-

Yes, what a great video Reap the wild Wind is, I look at it regularly being an Ultravox fan since Vienna hit the no. 1 position in Holland during 1981 (honest, you should check the glovecompartment of my car).

There is a lot of black and white footage in it as well showing Swordfish, Hurricanes, Spitfires taking off in formation etc. Midge Ure being a huge filmfan as well as his interest in black and white footage (remember Vienna)
this didn’t surprise me at all.

CrazyMainer gave the correct answer of course (and being American as well)
If I’m correct the video featured Spitfire Ia AR213.

Cheers

Hi All,

The cockpit recordings are from a BBC Doc. on the BoB Lanc. I read an interview with David who says the sound enginer who work on there mastering of MLOR Alb. brought these in when they could’nt get a good studio take.

As for the break-up the main reason was after the Wall gigs they wanted to put out a follow up to The Wall and do a big Stadium Tour well Roger was all for the Album but did’nt want to do any touring. If you remember right after Final Cut came out so did Davids second Solo Album most of this was to go onto the next PF album but Roger and David were’nt talking by this time.

Its funny Roger did most of the writing and singing on the Final Cut but it was Nick and David who did the mixing and final mastering  .

I myself like Dark Side and Wish You Were Here far better sounding albums.

The Spit flying over was a Late Summer Show in 1982, The Spit was one of the BoB planes comming from some outting. I remeber seeing a photo in Rolling Stones of the show with the Spit going over the top. Must have been a PF fan.

But just to muddy the waters (no pun intended) a little further the band were dragged through various legal battles because Waters wanted the band name, but so did Gilmour hence the long gap between Final Cut and Division Bell,

Very ironic album titles

Did anybody go to Berlin to watch The Wall concert there? I watched it on DVD last night a fabulous concert 😀

Any idea what he’s actually saying? I can make out “Flaps set”, but the rest is drowned out by by guitar and drums…”

Hi Steve,
I found this website which contains all the lyrics for Floyd songs, including the pre-recorded spoken bits etc. Here’s the lyrics page for Momentary Lapse of Reason…

http://www.allfloyd.com/lyrics/Moment.html

Reading through the lyrics,it seems as though the aircraft they are flying is some sort of multi-engine type, perhaps even a warbird. There’s mention of ‘Friction locks’,which as far as I know only appear on old propliners and warbirds.I’ve just remembered that a DC-3 is used in the Learning to Fly video,so perhaps they’re flying a Dak???

“I was lead to believe that the “Final Cut” caused the break up of the band, as Gilmour & Mason thought that the tracks were just rejects from The Wall, as are many of the tracks on Amused to Death, personally I prefer Radio K.a.o.s.”

To be honest,I think the Floyd were going to the wall (pun pun!) alot earlier than this. The band members themselves have said that the last album they worked together on was ‘Wish You Were Here’ in 1975.”Animals” was written almost entirely by Waters,as was ‘The Wall’.Keyboard player Rick Wright left the band after the Wall tour in about 1981,and Mason and Gilmour basically became session musicians on ‘Final Cut’, it’s really a Roger Waters album under the Pink Floyd name.

As already said the Final cut album was dedicated to Waters father in part and partly dedicated to the rift between the band and the fact this was likely to be the last studio album.
I also agree with whoever said it , Waters album ‘Amused to Death’ is pure brilliance, a fantasic and emotional piece of work.

According to a radio interview with Dave Gilmour a year or so ago,the excerpt of radio chatter that appears in the middle of the track ‘Learning to Fly’ is a recording done during one of Nick’s flying lessons. There’s a useful bit of info for you…

Well well well… Thanks Ant, I never knew that! 🙂

Straying off topic slightly, did anyone else deliberately get into work ten minutes late this morning because they were sat in the car park listening to Richard Allinson’s Long Song on Radio Two…? Start your Friday morning with the full length, original and genuine version of “Us and Them” running through your mind, can’t beat it. 😀

Just a shame that the public didn’t want to know…

#Standing at the window
A farmer’s wife in Oxfordshire
Glances at the clock it’s nearly time for tea
She doesn’t see
The Phantom in the hedgerow dip its wing
(~moo~)
Doesn’t hear the engine sing
(~moo, jet airplane~)
[Radio Voice:] (~…two zero three…~)
But in the cockpit’s techno glow
Behind the Ray Ban shine
[Radio Voice:] (~Roger, takeoff right after runway two zero~)

In the comfort of routine
Scans his dials and smiles

Pilot to navigator…

There is no right, no wrong

And blue skies and flight… flight… flight.#

Dave Gilmour is not the only PF member with an interest in aircraft;drummer Nick Mason owns and flies a Piper Cub based at,I think,Sywell. Both Gilmour and Mason learned to fly as a means of overcoming a fear of flying that they had developed during thier years of touring in the 70’s.

The connection with the Almighty PF and aircraft I believe to be due to Dave Gilmours interest rather than the genius of Roger Waters.
The Spitfire reference comes from the Knebworth concert of 198??? ,just cant remember, when a spit overflew the arena and stage.

So many fellow floyd fans… Brilliant!
Just finished watching David Gilmour in Concert DVD again. It’s nice to hear a different perspective on some of the PF songs.

(back to historic aviation…)
I seem to remember Gilmours P-51D being static at DX for the past few years, but has since gone elsewhere. Anyone know whereabouts?

I always thought it was Hanna Jr. flying the Buchon in the Travis vid.

Wasn’t there also an OFMC Hunter used in Fat Boy Slim’s video of “Bird of Prey”?

“Tenuously related… didn’t the late Mark Hanna fly the Buchon in the video for a Travis track shortly before his accident? Seem to think it was a Travis track anyway…”

I thought that for a long time, although there was a post on here not so long ago which stated that Nigel Lamb did the flying for the video. Can anyone confirm?

Never did get to see the Floyd (somewhat annoyingly, given my monicker), or indeed any of Dave Gilmour’s aeroplanes. I think the Mustang was G-SIRR, the Gnat was G-MOUR, but no idea on the rest.

So… so you think you can tell… heaven from hell…

Sorry, having a Floyd moment again. 😉
