Putin orders Russian special forces into Iraq.

It would be ironic if the Russians come in, after the combined blitzing of the US/UK for three years, and billions of dollars of ordinance and within 36 hours finds and kills most of the Al-Quida in Iraq, then follow up a lead and find Bin Laden taking a wizz…

are we watching a movie here? :confused: Putin has plenty of his own problems of “internal” terrorists that he couldn’t solve in 36 hours. :rolleyes: This is most likely just a political move so he can appear strong against any islamic terrorists, which is meant to be for his home audience.

Being tough is one thing but the Russians have proven they are incapable of an effective responce to situations like the one in hall in Moscow and the school. Many died as a result of blunders on the part of the Russian military. Lets face it thay lack skill and the weapons mix to do anything effective on their own.

of Iraqis and other nationals, how ever when it reached home

He’d probably even have him back to the ranch for another barbecue, which I hear Putin enjoys.

The Russians aren’t going to air-drop a division of paratroops or a Spetznaz regiment into the middle of Bagdad and start blitzing the place. These ‘special forces’ mentioned are likely to be a small Spetznaz or Alpha killteam, who would come in on the next commerial flight while their gear will go to the Russian embassy in the diplomatic poach.

The Americans should be pleased. The Russians are going to use their contacts to find and take out terror leaders they probably been after for years. I wonder if they will pay them that $5m reward if they take out the new No1 Al-Q guy in Iraq. 😀

Well how ’bout because we don’t want Americans and Russians shooting at each other for starters. Or the Russians committing atrocites that the US then gets blamed for. And how would they get there, hoof it? If they fly in and they try to come in unannounced what do you think would happen? I’m all for them sending Russian troops down to help but if they don’t coordinate and instead try to come in and do their own thing there are likely to be problems.

Just an update on that story about the kidnapped Russkie, apparently the decpaitation of the terrorist was a response to the ear thing. Meant to say “Treat him nicely from now on or else”, I have been told that the kidnappers were known to be directly funded by the new regime in Iran. The Soviets despatched a member of the KGB to Tehran and after much negotiating he was allowed to see the Ayotollah – however the hell u spell it. With him was a briefcase. The Ayotollah was handed the briefcase and inside he found numerous satellite photo’s of terrorist training camps in North Africa and in Iran. The Russian asked “Do you know what these are?” Them being the main training camps for Palestinian groups. The Ayotollah just nodded. The Russian then informed him that if the Ambassador was not released within 36 hours the same photos and exact co-ordinates would be handed to contacts in Tel Aviv as well as “additional information”. After the Russian left the Iranians allegedly got on the phone and ordered the release of the Ambassador, 36 hours later he was handed to a plain-clothed Spetznaz unharmed….except for the ear of course :rolleyes:

There is the famous story of a Russian diplomat who was captured in the ME. His finger or ear was delivered to the embassy…the KGB captured the brother & other relatives of one of the abductors and sent a head back, with the gonads in the mouth, sewed shut…the diplomat was released..so the story goes.

I believe that (or something similar) was in Beirut in the 80’s…when western journalists, envoys (Terry Waite) and spies (the CIA bureau chief) were either killed or held for years.

Simply put, the USSR didn’t take cr*p from anyone…and they got results that the “nice guys” couldn’t.
A classic example of the only thing terrorists understand/respect is violence.

Nick, I have heard this story. Apparently one of their amabssadors…think it was to Syria…was kidnapped and like u said a part of his ear was sent to the emabssy. In response, Spetznaz kidnapped one of the guards where the ambassador was being held. His head was delivered in a basket with a message reading simply “You have 36 hours”, exactly 36 hours later the ambassador was released. I love Russian negotiations :diablo:

I wouldn’t be surprised is the Russians have been in Iraq for a while now, for just such contingencies and to keep an eye on people and groups with links to Chechnya or other trouble spots along the border. If dead bodies of senior militants in Iraq start turning up unexpectedly then we shall know why, I doubt we will see or hear anything in public though. Lot of unsung hero work 😎
