Racing and Civilian liveried Spitfires

This is a (very) rough list of all the Spitfires I could find that had raced (in military or civilian colours) and/or wore non-military colour schemes. Having followed the G-AISU thread I am sure there are others and variations out there…any additions would be welcome.

G-AIDN

That’ll be the second yellow scheme Mark – shot at Yeovilton if I remember correctly – when based at Baginton. (Wasn’t around for the first one!) 🙂

I’ll scan when I get home.

BTW – I have a lovely shot of the Elmdon apron for the 1947 or 48 air races which shows both ‘IDN and ‘ISU – I’ll see if I can dig it out.

G-AIDN

An excuse to use my new 35mm scanner! (Not had time to sort out the dust spots yet but never mind)

David,

In your list, you make no note of G-AIDN being light blue at any time. It was in this scheme with Air Race code ’99’ between around 1959-68. Here is a shot of it I took over Staverton on 31st March 1968, whilst formating with The Skyfame Museum’s Airspeed Oxford V3388/G-AHTW (well, someone had to!)

I love that scheme on the Rolls Mk14. It’d be great to see it restored in those colours.

I think there is a pic of her somewhere on the forum in this scheme.

If you want to include NH188 wearing her civvy code AND full scheme, you could, I suppose!

This is a well-known shot (from webshots.com, where I originally found it).

TJ et al–

Ted Hooton’s old “Spitfire Special” monograph also has a nice B&W ground shot of F.24 N7929A. No idea what the colours actually were but she was a beauty.

May have missed it but did John Paterson’s ex-COGEA NH188/CF-NUS get mentioned? She was in a sort of steel blue with white trim and the odd “bib” antiglare panel sometimes seen on COGEA Spits, and Paterson had added the 421 Sqn RCAF Indian head insignia (actually the McColl-Frontenac Oil Co logo) just ahead of the wingroots. Later she was painted (wildly inaccurately) in full 421 Sqn markings and is on show thus attired in the Canada Aviation Museum at Rockcliffe.

If I find the magazine I will scan the photo of it. Unless the intrepid Mark12 might have a photo of the Mark24….

There was a b/w photo in either Air Classics or Warbirds Intl. many years ago of Lee Fairbrother’s Mk. 24 N7929A in a white paint job with red or blue trim on it.

Argh! I so want to see this one! 😉

OO-ARE wore a non standard colour scheme on your photographs.

OO-ARA was overall silver with anti-glare black panel (RNAF colour scheme) when delivered to COGEA with the COGEA NOUVELLE logo under the cockpit. Became later blue, date unknown.

When did the Cogea Spits get their White scheme? From these photos shot at Lübeck around 1958 they were silver with some trim. Check out this web site with lots of color photos of the German Sea Fury target tugs. http://members.aol.com/tgenth/page3e.html
