Well race fans, time for some New Yearโs resolutions. As I will be in the Popham area in March Iโve decided that a flight in the Rearwin would be just the thing. Of course, knowing Melvcock he will still be fidgeting with this and that, doing endless taxi test, running up and down the runway just asking for an accident. Anything except flying the silly thing. Well, come the 5th of March the Rearwin will fly. I may be making its FIRST flight, but the Rearwin will fly. Has anyone got a seat cushion to help me reach the rudder peddles?
Oh, and youโre all invited out for coffee and slagging after.

Happy to supply the Hairyplane as a camera ship – just need a toggie (if MotF can’t make it of course..!).
My birthday on the 6th so if the Wx is cr@ppola on the 5th…?!
All the best for 05 to SRP, MH et al.

Having consulted with my handy LAME (down Dilbert…) retaining connection between a/c and engine in flight is “a good thing.” Way to go Mr Melvis… ๐

What have you done to the engine mount? I hope this is not an indication of your build quality. ๐
Also, do you need any inspections, or are you just waiting on the registration and airworthiness certificate?
The mount was a combination of Rearwin and Fairchild 24. The problem was this was for the short sump Warner and I have the long sump so we had to convert the mount further. The one I got was a full ring mount and the motor I got required a horseshoe mount so we had to rebrace the ring and move some tubes around. We did this and added some as per a Cessna Airmaster drawing but I need to get the modification signed off. It is way stronger than it needs to be and preliminary stress calcs showed it to be fine.
The rest still needs final inspections and then I get to apply for a permit to test. Once that is done I have to apply for a permit and then wait whilst the paperwork gets done.
61 days is not a long time.

Oh, forgot about using GMT…
Only 61 days until the (possibly first) Rearwin flight!

Might be less. It all sort of depends on whether I can afford the insurance (or even food for that matter), whether I am going to have to have the engine mount re-stress analysed and if the PFA are quick with the paperwork.
I ran it up to full power yesterday for the first time (JDK, the starting problem was the fuel not atomising in the cold. I need a larger priming pump) and it sounded great. Not only that but you can tell when an aeroplane wants to fly. Taxying down today it was responsive and ready to go.
It is just paper now, and some of that process is out of my hands!
Still planning a week in France in May though!

Hey Melv,
Are you going to send Patty up to New England Air Musuem so he can get use to the cockpit lay-out before he jumps into your Baby ๐
I’m sure the guys at NEAM wouldn’t mind Steve do some run ups of their aircraft ๐ฎ

George may not deflate, but Melv’s hoping to, so Kyle can fit in the a/c at the same time as our hero. ๐

Well you can rely on Patty, Melv…Not that you’ll need to, I’m sure.
Let’s hope ‘George’ doesn’t start deflating while airborne, eh???

I was going to enquire if Melvin would be allowed to make the first flight or if a pilot with experience on type might have to come from the US and test it first. (But now I don’t need to) ๐
mmitch.
For a test pilot I am using George, the autopilot from the Airplane films!
If I can avoid going broke it will be flying before then.
