Social networking

My daughter insists that she’s going to create a twitter account for me,in spite of being told that the only thing I’d ever tweet is ” Oh for heaven’s SAKE !! “

Is there any value in these social networking websites ?

Are sites like twitter and facebook a wonderful way for people of all ages to keep in touch, or do you think as I do,that they invest too much importance in trivial occurences, giving the impression that we need to know everything about everybody at all times ?

Have you got hundreds of friends on facebook that you really do know ?

Is anyone man ( or woman ) enough to admit that they tweet ? :diablo:

Some people have far too much time on there hands,

Facebook, Twitter, Mobile Phones with SMS, I-Pods the other nifty little gadgets and there are many are simple to figure out it works like this

If you cant figure out how to use it….You are to old
If you have to ask how to use it….You are to old
If you dont understand it…..You are to old
If you qualify for any of the above…..Dont use them

I qualify for two and dont use them:confused::confused::confused::confused:

Simple’s

Things slowly improving here.

It’s not for me – her most recent tweet was telling her 400 followers that she’d taken the hamster to the vet.Life’s too short for faffing around with such matters. The hamster is OK,but middle age has set in – at ten months:eek:

Thanks for trying to make it clear and I think I see what you are getting at and that perhaps in that/those fairly narrow circumstances it has some advantage.

I wonder if any of this has helped Bumble Bee…..

Good point ! She seems to have buzzzzzzzed out of this one! 😀

But seriously – email? Taking your example – what is the difference?

To e-mail I’d have to create a ‘group’ for the addresses obviously, and then keep it up to date.

But there is a difference. As I hinted with the SMS.

If I post on Facebook “Off to Sandown this afternoon” nobody who reads it would imagine I will be slighted if they simply ignored it because they are busy, don’t fancy Sandown or can’t stand my company.

If, on the other hand, I sent each of them an e-mail. The first response is probably “So what?” The second is that it almost imposes on them the obligation to mail something back.

Different level of involvement, that’s all.

My feeling is that we managed very well before social networking came along but when it arrived half the world had to participate and has ended up sharing inconsequential “twittering” for a large percentage of the time. But I am ready to be convinced otherwise!!:)

I have a facebook page, but I really can’t see why people want to let their friends know their status so often ( mine would currently be on a coach, squashed in like a sardine, and hoping fervently not to be travel sick in the next three and three quarter hours ).

That’s a big queue for the RH seat, Moggy. You ought to be more selective.;)

But seriously – email? Taking your example – what is the difference? I ask for information, not to be provocative, because no one has yet given me a good enough reason for it.

I use Facebook, but I had to set it to get rid of all the silly games and applications, or it just became unusable. Some people it seems have very little to do! The other thing that winds me up over it, is when somebody who knew you when you were kids requests you as a friend, then you never hear anything again.

It’s a good tool though overall, and a good thing I reckon. It would be a lot harder to keep in touch with my overseas friends without it.

Not really.

If I post “I’m going to pop over to Sandown this afternoon” on my FB page it is read by around thirty or forty of my flying friends, any one of whom could be up for either a RH seat, or to meet me over there.

I haven’t the time to send forty SMS. Even if I did, that is more of an imposition on them, most would feel they have to reply, even if they aren’t going.

It’s just a different way of keeping in touch and very useful in what it does well. There is some rubbish on there, but its easy to ignore and, as I say, choose your ‘friends’ carefully and it is minimised.

Isn’t it just as easy to keep in touch by email and SMS? And Talk, if you have it…and as PeeDee mentions, Forums and Skype.

The moral to that is to choose your ‘friends’ carefully.

I used to have a bit of a sniffy attitude towards Facebook; thought it was only for the kind of Pikeys you see on the Jeremy Kyle show. But a friend pesuaded me to try it, and it can be quite useful for keeping in touch with people, sharing thoughts, etc. Some people put an awful lot of rubbish on there too though, like “Might have a sleep!!!” followed by 20-odd replies of “ROFLMAO!” and similar idiotic stuff.

I find Facebook a very useful tool, especially since my travelling over the years has brought me into contact with fantastic people from all walks of life. It’s very easy to keep in touch with people via Facebook.

I have Twitter as well but i mostly use it to follow news.

I don’t Twitter, but I do have Facebook, and while I don’t post every detail of my life, I do post the odd thought now and then, and more often than not the film I’m watching at that moment.

I have got in touch with a lot of people I went to school with, and there was a pretty awesome high school reunion a couple of weeks back. I also keep in touch with a lot of horsey friends on there, too.

That’s about it.

OK, so I’ve got friends on there I’ve never met, but the chances are that some of them I will end up meeting sooner or later!

I do use Facebook and have found it great for keeping contacting friends scattered across the world and old school friends etc. I don’t randomly add people either as there are some people in the world I certainly do not want to know.
I also use my Facebook account to share my hobbies such as photography with friends and I do not generally post photos much elsewhere online.

I understand the logic of Twitter in some cases news etc and although I have not joined it I have looked at the London Fire Brigade feed and Croydon one recently. I just find the constant updating people on mediocre and uninteresting information there a bit much.
