Some Classic SAABs

At the Swedish Air Force main air show (“Huvudflygdag”) (Rönneby 29’th August) there was some excellent historic planes in the air. (The J29 was missing – in search of an engine?)

B17 “Blue Johan” thrown about with élan. Clearly it was a fine divebomber in its day – and all the other things it did.

Lansen. A fully aerobatic show. It occurs to me, this is what the Hunter could have been. Afterburner, radar and adequate fuel?

A very well kept Draken.

The next-to-last JaktViggen display. The final one will be at Östersund 9’th October. It certainly lives up to its name – Viggen = Thunderbolt! 😉
(no pic.)

The new Gripens zipped around like demented flying saucers – (no offence) – but look what’s under the belly of some of them. That “square” fueltank is originally built in Denmark (Per Udsen) for the Danish Drakens. (carried in pairs). They were refurbished by Danish Aerotech and sold to Sweden, that hadn’t used them priviously. Their Draken tanks were “round”.

A lovely day in Sweden’s “garden”-country.

Of course I wholeheartedly support the “Draken Team Karup”:

http://www.draken.dk/

There is an interesting link on their site to Norway’s Starfighter supporters, working to get one in the air!

Good luck!

You’re right, Firebird, long may it continue!

And here is how NOT to do it!

Saturday “Draken Team Karup” ran the engine (and reheat) of AT-153/OY-SKA for their members. It is ready to fly but kept on the ground by a legal battle between “Scandinavian Historic Flight” (Norway) and the Danish Air Force Air Material Command. 😡 😮

It was probably the last time to see the Hughes 500 at an airshow “in service”. It will be retired around New Year.

Operators?

In the hand out programme it says:

B17 SAAB

A32 J35 Flygvapnet

On the webside? I think I saw “Flygvapnets Kammeratskabsförening” (or letters to that effect) for the Lansen and Draken – an “old soldiers club”?

That’s jogged a few memory cells and I seem to remember reading somewhere, that they were operated by a ‘club’ of retired Swedish Airforce personnel with the active assistance of the Airforce, which would sort of fit with your description above.
Anyway, long may it continue 😀

There were other Viggens present. A twoseater modified for electronic warfare and a recce (“spaning”) one from F21.

The main workshops were a highlight too with many Gripens with their insides out and one on a hyd. test stand.

Best regards

Hi Firebird, another fellow Saaber here, are you in the owners club?. i have a 9-3 turbo cabrio. a 900i and a 900 base model, both three door classics, and am about to buy a 900i five door classic for a VERY reasonable amount.
whats yours?
Greg

I’ve just bought a 9-5 Aero (MY04)this weekend, funnily enough. Had a 9000 Aero (MY96) previously until a few months ago, and a 9000 CSE V6 which I inherited from my late father, and have just sold this evening. I did have a C900SE (MY93) some years ago, and my Dad had several C900’s previously as well. Do you frequent the forum on www.saabscene.co.uk…?

If only I could afford to drive a Lansen or Draken though……… 😀 😀

Cracking shot above of the Lansen taxiing with the Draken pulling up in the background.. 🙂

Thanks Papa Lima! Reading the newspaper on the way to school was one thing, reading that was proving a bit more difficult!

The Tunnan photo is not mine, and I am afraid that I can’t remember where it came from, but most likely the Forum itself.

“CCCP-70501 (1G144-12 ?) som havererade utanför Gotland 87.05.27 med en ensam avhoppande ryss som startat från Saldu i Lettland. An-2:an, med TT 4211 tim, överlåtet av ryssarna till Kåremo Flygmuseum, men nu tillbaka på Gotland och GOFF-samlingarna.”

CCCP-70501 (1G144-12 ?) that crashed outside Gotland 27 May 19 with a lone defecting Russian, who had flown from Saldu in Latvia. The An-2, with 4211 flying hours, was given by the Russians to Kåremo Aviation Museum, but is now back in Gotland in the GOFF collection.

If you can read Swedish, see the following link:
http://hem.passagen.se/sfff/an-2artikel.htm
Among other things it tells the story of an Aeoflot An-2 CCCP-70501 that landed on Gotland on 27 May 1987 with the 30-year-old pilot on board who was defecting.
I could translate the whole of it, but haven’t the time!

Does anyone know the story of that Colt on Gotland? It’s just north of Visby at an old airport. Does it say Aeroflot? I think it might be the one that defected from one of the Baltic States in the ’50, I know it landed in Gotland. Any other info from Swedish members? I wish i had gotten to go to some of the airshows when i lived in Sweden, but wasnt there during the summer!

GDL, is that a J21R?

Are those SAAB Jets privately owned or are they maintained by the Air Force?
mmitch

IIRC they are retained and operated by the Swedish Airforce, probably in a similar way to the BBMF 😀

I wonder if they will be adding a Viggen to the stable……

I still can’t belive the awesome Viggen is soon to be no more 🙁

Top marks to the Swedes for keeping their heritage alive 🙂 🙂

But as a Saab driver I’m biased 😉

I now wish I had gone to Rönneby too, but felt too jet-lagged after my epic Canada trip. Next year it’ll have to be Rönneby instead of Halmstad, if not both!

When you see the Gripen up close like that you can really feel for how small it is. Nice shots all!

Another classic
