ut hey, it made for great TV. Oh well, The Crocodile Hunter was a Hollywood character, and he died like a Hollywood character.

Couldn’t disagree with that statement more……I guess there’s always a cynical one in a bunch though……….quite sad you are of that opinion because it means you totally were missing the message he was getting out.

He had the methods he did because he truly and utterly loved all of God’s creatures more than most other human beings on the planet. He cared deeply for this Earth and the creatures on it in a way that was very unique. He presented his enthusiasm the way he did to get people interested in the parts of the natural world that are in many cases gravely misunderstood by less educated people on the various subjects he covered.

His goal in life was conservation, preservation, and general protection of all animals. He chose to take on the television personality he did because A. that is really the way he was. and B. it was a good way to get people excited and interested as I mentioned earlier.

I learned so much about the natural world from watching his shows, and I feel that millions if not billions of other people did as well.

He wasn’t doing what he did for the fame or fortune and to put him on the same list as a typical Hollywood celebrity is something I consider very insulting to him and the legacy he left behind. He was doing what he did because he had an unrivalled passion and love for animals and he wanted to get the rest of the world to see the same point of view that he did….we should preserve our planet and its creatures.

But then that’s indirect speculation that Steve was messing with it, the pure facts are not out yet so let’s not speculate aye? all we have heard is that he was swimming above it at the time and it became spooked because the cameraman was close by as well, also this time of year the stingrays are on the lookout for tiger sharks so are extra alert.

While any death is tragic. Irwin was always a camera hog. Some call his act enthusiasm, I just saw it as egotism. A lot of time the animals he wanted to film would be just sleeping, and he would go and pick it up, forcing it to lash out at him. But hey, it made for great TV. Oh well, The Crocodile Hunter was a Hollywood character, and he died like a Hollywood character.

Just let this be a lesson to people. Wild animals like people just want to be left alone.

I hope his legacy will live on, He did a lot for conservation of rare animals and gave countless millions a huge insight into these animals, His hand on aproach did have critics but he made his own choices to do that and was very professional, He did things very differently from what most Wildlife presenters had done before him and made for very entertaining Television.

The baby situation was in hindsight probably a mistake but he was always in control of the situation and nobody was harmed, I think this is certainly not something to remember him by.

Its sad and ironic that of all the animals he dealt with it was a docile Fish that was to take his life, At least he died doing something he loved, He was a fine Ambassedor for Australia and for nature lovers everywhere.

The Sting Ray has a barb like stinger on the tail.Plus it is poisonous as well.Steve started playing with crocs when he was 11 when he helped his dad trap them. His morning ritual up to his death was to have a morning surf.Loved being in the water and to him very natural. He was very passionate about his animals and that has always been misconstrued by the public. You either loved him or loathed him.But in regards to what he and his family has done for nature and animal preservation he has few equals.

THE body of Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin has been flown to the Sunshine Coast from far north Queensland.

His casket was flown from Cairns and is due to arrive at a Sunshine Coast airport later this afternoon.

Close friend John Stainton, who was accompanying the body, said Irwin’s funeral arrangements would be left to the family after Queensland Premier Peter Beattie offered a state funeral.

Mr Stainton said a state funeral would be a fitting tribute to Irwin’s contributions to Queensland and Australia.

“I haven’t thought about and I don’t know how they would react to it but I feel that when you’re in a public place like he was, that people do need to be able to share some closure,” Mr Stainton said.

“I think it probably would be fitting but it’s up to Terri.”

Irwin leaves behind wife Terri and children Bindi, 8, and Bob, 2.

well said you two

Steve’s Australia Zoo is just down the road from my wife’s aunt, been there a few times, a wonderful place to visit, never actually got to see him which was deeply unfortunate but you can see the legacy he has left behind and we know that Terri & his children + his dad will keep the good work going, most touching moment for me about Steve was when he was describing the loss of his mother in a terrible car accident, may they be united and RIP.

Terribly sad.

Though some of his countrymen might disagree….or even cringe…to me Steve personified what many think of a “typical” Aussie.

Brave, enthuiastic,…a bit larger than life.

My condolences to his family.

RIP, Mr. Irwin
Thanks for all your good deeds on behalf of animals.

My mother called to tell me about this news this morning, and I have to say I was in total disbelief the first time she said it.

It’s still hard for me to accept, and amid watching all the news programs on TV right now about him it’s really a heart-breaking thing……

I found myself loving to watch him over the years. He taught me so much about animals that I’d never have known and he really gave the average person great insight into the natural world and the animals that live in it.

His knowledge and his enthusiasm and the fact that he was simply so genuine were things that made me listen to everything he had to say.

The world has truly taken a great loss today, and the natural world a great defender. I will greatly miss him, but most importantly today, his wife and two small children have lost a wonderful father.

He was a great person, and it’s a shame that there aren’t more people like him that care so deeply about the creatures on this Earth who in many cases are so gravely misunderstood.

May he rest in peace. God Bless him.

My children aged 5 and 3 very much enjoy Steve Irwin, he has/had such a wonderful sparkling enthusiasm and they have videos etc. of him with The Wiggles and all that sort of thing. I think he did a tremendous thing eliminating the pomposity of all these big game afficionados sneaking about in forests and so on. He created, and particularly for children, a sense of joy and relationship with wildlife. At breakfast this morning our children were showing me their video collection and telling me “he’s dead, he was stung by a sting ray”.

My heart goes out to his wife and young family.

And now in dubious taste … at about 11pm last night I received the first of two Steve Irwin jokes! It never ceases to amaze me how fast they come around. One of them was in particulalry poor taste and I won’t share it … but the other is harmless enough …

“Well of course he wasn’t wearing his shades. What? Raybans.”

sad news i was watching his movies like 10 years ago when i was a child.

I dont see any tail on that sea animal how it came it made a hole on his chest!!

About halfway down the tail, there’s the barb. Normally, stingrays are more dangerous when they’re buried in the sand, and someone inadvertantly steps on one….

And this has to be the biggest I’ve ever seen…!

Its not called a Stingray for nothing and it has to deal with Sharks and Killer Whales that are a damm sight bigger than a human is. It is also a fish that will leave you alone if you leave it alone. 😉

Its an extremely sad thing thats happened, and even more so to someone who showed raw and true passion for his job and the issues he believed in. His family will be devastated, and the people who enjoyed his programmes will also sorely miss him. He will be missed 🙁

Not to mention that he apologised for that incident – others might not have.

Really? I thought he consistently refused to because he never thought his kid was in danger.

I think he was a nutter, personally.

Well he did once dangle his one month old son infront of a croc, you call that ‘professional’. Okay he knew what he was doing but there was still that danger, an unpredictable croc or a snake could have had him. If I remember rightly he did a few times get bitten by a snake. So my point even if he knew his crocs, does that give him the right to stand 6 ft away frm them enticing them to jump towards him?

Regards

AJ

I think you need to look a bit deeper into it, keep an eye out on Discovery regarding Steve’s life so far, Steve is free to do whatever he feels is right, professional or not, if he dangled his son in front a croc then that was his choice and he knew the risks, I saw the episode where he did that and I didn’t see what all the fuss was about (although I’d never do that with my kids) but again that was his choice.
And what gives him the right to stand 6ft away? the right of freedom, he knew what he was doing, and who are you or I to say whether he has the ‘right’ to undertake such activities or not? end of story
