The Hun

Who else just loves the mighty F-100 Super Sabre? I think it’s is one of the most beautiful airplanes of the Cold War.

Along with its Russian counterpart, the MiG-19, it helped to usher in the era of supersonic fighters.

Widely used around the world, it saw combat over Vietnam as well as a few other instances.

It proved to be a very effective attack aircraft as well as the first of the Weasels.

Anyone have good photos of the Hun they would like to share? Photos with F-100’s armed with Shrikes would be nice if possible.

The Duxford F-100D should be 54-2165.

Yeah i lost my book with all the serials in it, odly enough the scheme it wears means it was bought in 1942 or something (sure i am wrong for some reason).

Was looking for any pic of Boyd’s Hun and found this thread among others. Seen a number of Hun related threads around here and not one single mention of its most famous pilot, John “Forty Second” Boyd, yes same guy who did the EM theory.

I was just thinking the same thing! Great story of him beginng his thoery of EM by pancaking the aircraft violenty to throw off his opponet. This was also the beginning of his OODA theories. His is a personal favorite, in fact i am giving a lecture on Thurs and he will be a major topic.

you can see the F100 quite clearly from the main road, although in the current climate it might be wise to ask before you just start taking piccies.
i believe they also have a F111 preserved on base as well, although i don’t think is on public display.

Best memory of F-100s – Lakenheath’s Armed Forces Day 1965, 48 TFW launched a 24-ship formation for a single flypast, then landed again.

they still have a F100 as a gate gaurdian there.

Great set of new photos. Always a pleasure to see pictures I’ve never seen before.

The more I look at the F-100 the more I can figure out why I like it. I guess it just has such clean lines (without the wing-mounted refuelling probe of course). It just looks like it was meant to be a fighter.

Beautiful airplane.

1st price goes to the guy (or gal) who locates Weasel Huns with Shrikes. You get some points for simply finding armed Weasel Huns (or F-100D’s with Sidewinders or Bullpups…preferably the latter) period.

Here’s a chance to redeem myself and post a couple of great F-100 pics courtesy of NASA.
You like these ones, PhantomII ?

I just ordered the new Century Series Fighters book from AirTime, and I’m hoping its as good as the Phantom book I have from them.

I can’t wait for it to arrive. Hopefully I can add some new things to this thread when it arrives.

Just how loud is the Hun?

Quite loud…….. 😉

And that’s without that charismatic big ‘bang’ when the burner gets lit up….. 😀

I like the Thud too, but what does it have to do with the F-100?

Not trying to be rude or anything. By the way that’s a nice photo of that F-105G you posted.

Sorry P11, didn’t mean to hijack your thread with the F105, I like both of the jets and as they fought alongside each other in ‘Nam, thought I would do a pic.
Maybe I should start a thread dedicated to the Thud also.

Is the F-100F that that guy owns and flies at air shows a former Weasel? There looks to be a RHAWS display in the cockpit.

Or maybe it’s just something else?
