We’re the Millers……..on Sky box office, funny as feck, stars Jennifer Anniston, classics are where the copper wants a b job and the son snogging the mum and sister scene, ohhh and spider one.. Don’t want to give be anything away, but it had me laughing all the way through.

Look at the proto-Fireball XL5, complete with realistic exhaust (you can imagine a bloke just outside of the frame, holding up an electric fan to create the sense of speed!).

And for you Historic anoraks, now you know where all the early Spitfire fuel gauges went. They appear in one of the Quatermass films, too!

Captain Philips – terrific film – still a bit seasick!!

Tora! Tora! Tora!

Given yesterday was December 7th, I stuck the blu-ray in the machine for another watch. Still a great movie. The blu-ray disc has the extended Japanese cut as well, but I’ve not tried watching this yet.

The World’s End

The third film from Messrs. Pegg, Wright and Frost. And I’m still not sure of it. I saw it in the cinema and wasn’t massively enthusiastic about it. Watching it on DVD and I’m still of the same opinion. Oh well.

Shaun of the Dead

The first film in the Three Flavours trilogy – and undoubtedly the best of the bunch! Still funny, still touching, still gory as hell, still brilliant after the nth viewing!

Taken. Liam Nielson, whoe’s daughter gets kidnapped in Paris, and he sets off from the USA to get her back.
All action, and as it was on Telly, it’s bound to be shown again.

Gravity with Sandra Bullock and George Clooney.
A 3D space story that is pretty good if a little hard to believe.

The Dawn Patrol

The original 1930 version, with Richard Barthelmess and Douglas Fairbanks Jr. I’ve seen the 1938 remake countless times, but never the original, and it was startling to see that the David Niven/Errol Flynn version is near enough a word-for-word remake! It’s no use saying that one is better than the other, because they’re both almost exactly the same!

Fighter Squadron

Again. Yes, I know, but what makes it different this time is that I watched it right after The Dawn Patrol and, shock, horror! Fighter Squadron is a partial remake!! (Airfield attack? Check. Rescue of downed pilot? Check.) The cinematic differences are slight, with the setting and themes the only real differences. Still, it’s a good movie to watch on a Sunday afternoon!

Star Trek

The 2009 reboot. Still good fun to watch – and on blu-ray, too!

Fast Five

The late Paul Walker’s finest hour, where he teams up with his street racing buddy Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) to bring down a Brazilian drug baron. Sequels to films are meant to get progressively worse, not suddenly get better!

I can watch them time and time again.

The book Cruel Sea is also something I reread at least once a year.

The Cruel Sea

I know the second one has no aviation content, but both films, for me certainly, seemed to capture the more personal side of WW2. Both Gregory Peck, and Jack Hawkins were outstanding in my mind.

Cabbage

Band Of Brothers, Good action War film, special effects are some of the best I have seen. 9/10

Gravity

Looks good in 3D, but the film is a bit predictable.

None the worse for that. Like submarine movies (and B17 movies) there are only so many things can happen in near Earth orbit unless you go down the BEM route.

A thriller set in space rather than sci-fi.

Stiff Upper Lips – very amusing pastiche of Merchant Ivory films.
