I was amazed to see that the census form is available in so many languages…..no wonder we have run out of money! Are any other countries like ours catering for so many languages?

I think we’re about done.
As an aside, I agree with pageno1.
I remember a time when we used to have interesting and stimulating discussions in here.
Oh well…..

I absolutely disagree with that, the census has long been a very important periodic log of what the make up our country and those living within it consists of, something we can pride ourselves on since the Doomsday Book of 1086 and the modern census of the past 210 years.
This is how we statistically know how mixed our population is, and lets not forget, immensely helpful for those of us that enjoy doing family trees and researching this country’s past.
I do think it is worth spending money on, but perhaps a little too much has been spent on presentation, management, etc on what should only be a form or two.Hopefully Tornado’s friend (he did say 99%?!) will recieve the full penalty.
As Is your right to do so. Be proud if you wish. I don’t have the time (or the money) to worry about family trees. But then again, it’s your own time and money, and therefore none of my business. As far as I’m concerned, whats gone is gone. I’m having enough hassle trying to keep body and soul together in the present. Is the census worth spending money on? If we had it to waste, then I might grudgingly agree with you, but we are repeatedly being told that there is none! Strangely enough though, there always seems to be enough for ‘projects’ like this. No offence intended sir, enjoy that census form;)

I’m not being funny, but these threads all look the same here now and are very repititive. Someone kicks off a topic, Lincoln7 gets all flared up over nothing, Sky High has to counter argument, a mod steps in under the thinly guised veil of trying to calm everyone down, Kev35 joins in and disagrees with everyone,
Oh I wouldn’t dare disagree with you Pagen. 😉
As for the
bizarre
use of language
and total
absence of logic,
well I’ll just leave that to our resident expert. Must dash, apparently I have a census form to fill in and any one of 54 new and exciting languages to learn. Perhaps I’ll start with English. 😀

So, you are implying that there are more than 15 million Mexicans in California? I don’t think so. I am sure Jerry Brown and Arnie, before him, would be interested in the information.
Pete. The best thing you could do is to go there and see for yourself, I am not stating all are Mexicans, but, the night I went out with the C.H.P. I went to the holding cells where they kept those they had caught trying to cross the border. What will surprise you is that there were Easterners who had been arrested also.

It’s a cenus, we do it every ten years whether we like it or not, there are lots of nationalities living here and it’s printed in 55+ languages – get used to it!
Me, Getting all flared up James, I think you are looking at postings made by a variant of Lincoln .7.
On a more sensible note, I do agree with you, but to be honest, it’s nice to have a discussion where we can all air our own particular beliefs and opinions,
and yes, we do sometimes get carried away, not quite as much as PeeDee, but we have all sailed close to the wind on different postings, even you, have, probably unknowingly been drawn into this discussion, simply by posting what you have. Easily done isnt it?.;)

Then you are not obliged to fill it in, as you are not in the country.
It’s like a stocktake in any business, a snapshot of what you have at that moment in time.

Pete. PLEASE don’t tell me you believe in numbers they put out, we all know figures can be manipulated to give good or bad results, or what any Government dept want us to believe, simply by number crunching.
Many moons ago, in fact more than I care to remember, I was a Probationer Police Constable for 2 yrs prior to keeping my nose clean and at the end of the 2 yrs, being a fully fledged Copper.
Right, scene now set, At the end of each month, all probationers had to fill in forms stating exactly how many arrests, speeders, and every other breach of the Law you had dealt with. T.B.H. there were slack months, and the Sgt then went over each of our Forms, and told us to add an offence here, and another there etc, Get the picture?, the figures were manipulated just so that, when my Sgt produced the Forms submitted to the Insp, they made good reading, as if everyone had reached their targets.I long ago stopped believing, figuratively speaking.Lincoln .7 😉

What you and your friend have seen and what you have felt is nothing to do with bare statistics. If Hispanics are about a third of the total population then “native Californians” are not an ethnic minority, are they?
In any case what is an ethnic Californian? The great characteristic of American society is that it has been a melting pot of races and cultures from all over the world for 3 centuries. Native Californians are in fact English, Italian, African, Mexican, Spanish, African, German, Japanese, Chinese and many others all comprising a multi-ethnic population but all US citizens and all integrated. Your friend will be descended from one of these groups of peoples unless he is of Red Indian descent, or native american as we must learn to call them!

Dead right tornado64. but if you were on holiday in the uk, you would have to be included on the form at the address you were staying at. be it at a hotel, guest house, caravan site or tent in a farmers field.
and you may just get off with it if you are in wales !!

Probably a flaw in the system as I know a few people who have already filled in and submitted theirs on line.
What did make me laugh is the question about the standard of spoken english, little Inky isn’t yet 3 but for her age she has good english, come to think of it I’ve heard worse from adults!
Why on earth do they want to know where I will be on the 27th, a difficult question for me to answere, it’s my wedding anniversary that day, and may well decide to leave home, and spend the night in an Hotel, which I havn’t booked as yet, so even an Hotel cannot state how many people will be residing there on that night, so to me, that question is irrelevant, and no doubt to many others.I am aware some of the questions are pertinant, but I consider the money could be far better spent on more worthwhile things. I have had two major life threatning Operations over the last few months at Addenbrooks, some 70 miles away from where I live. My local hospital has a cardio vascular surgeon who has the skills to do the ops, however, the hospital trust cannot afford the equipment for the surgeon to do it localy, ergo, Addenbrooks, kindly did them both. I therefor put forward a case of one place where the money could have been spent better, than number crunching beaurocrats.

I have no belief in the system.
As I do not have the ability or the will to create a better system, I accept it.
and make the best of a bad job.
No I don’t either but can still summon up the effort to rail against it – it makes me feel better!;)
By: Richard gray - 14th March 2011 at 13:32
and how pray tell me did you come to that conclusion ??
illegal immigrants by their very nature claim nothing off the state
they work and pay rent in run down areas
and keep on the move ( iv’e known a few personaly ) they usualy move when the authorities are onto them ( usualy reasonably quickly )the last thing they want is to appear on any government list
asylum seekers are a difrent kettle of fish altogether
i was once told the government paid them no money but gave them vouchers
but logic tells you money is being paid out somewhere as obviously a voucher has no monetary value and cannot be exhanged for items either can it !!
it is far from as easy as you seem to think to make a mass claim for bennefits
It was not a conclusion but just a thought on how census results could be used.
