I was amazed to see that the census form is available in so many languages…..no wonder we have run out of money! Are any other countries like ours catering for so many languages?

mines in the bin and no threats will ever make me fill it in no matter how you word it !!
i am probably far from wrong but the cost to the government in admin to collect fines would far outweigh the actual revenue collected in fines
another brilliant government money loosing scheeme
the prisons are full to bursting , where’s the money going to come from to build more ??
suggestions on the back of a postcard to no 10 drowning st !!
For the avoidance of any doubt, and for the sake of absolute and 100% clarity here, let me assure you that my post was not in any way a “threat”. I am merely telling you it how it is.
It is not personally an issue with me if you decide not to complete your form, and whilst it is a legal requirement to do so you it seems you must decide if you wish to break the law or not. Personally, I hope you fill your form in as the law of the coutry requires.
You will get a visit from Census staff if the form is not returned, so I very much hope they manage to persuade you to complete it and explain why you should do so.

I applaud your belief in the system. But I don’t share it. The logic of your argument is that we cannot afford to reduce spending money if people are put out of work – even if we cannot afford to pay them.

There’s a hole in my bucket.
I fail to see any problems with the census, done mine and submitted it.
(It’s my fourth one I have done, and possible my last, if it is not scrapped, I will possible be dead and gone before the next one in ten years’ time.)
Personal information is protected by law.
Census information is kept confidential for 100 yrs.
I do not worry about the government knowing about my personal information, nor even think that the government employs someone to search me out personally to check that I am behaving.
55+ languages Available so it should be, then there is no excuse for not filling it in.
It’s not as if every household is sent a census in every language.
I should imagine that most countries that have a cosmopolitan population do make their census Available in different languages.
Perhaps a census should be done every year, and the results sent to the benefits office, so that if Joe Bloggs and his wife living in The street anytown,uk. Receive benefit cheques for more than the amount of people stated on the form, and then more illegal immigrants may be found.
The taxpayer’s money spent reminds me of the song. “There’s a hole in my bucket dear Liza”
Scrap the census to save the money, and put people out of jobs.
So what do we do with the money saved?
Build new hospitals, schools, roads and shops, etc.
With whom shall we build them with?
Use the people who lost their jobs when we scrapped the census.
Where shall we put them?
In all the cities, towns and villages where we need them?
How will we know which cities, towns and villages need them?
We will have to find out the future population of each place.
And how will we do that?
Take a census.

I am not being pedantic, Linc, and I don’t think your fears have the remotest likelihood of being realised.:)
Pete, what you failed to add was, “In our lifetimes”.
I have a very highly respected surgeon friend in San Diego, California, he told me some time ago, that the illegal immigrants from Mexico, and from over the State Border have made the Californians the ethnic minority in their own State.

I would be sorry if this really were the last census.
I’ve just started dabbling with researching my family tree ( illegitimate way back on both sides, wouldn’t you know 😀 ),and past censuses are a useful way of discovering family members.
Personally,I think translating pretty much anything into other languages is a waste of resources, although that sounds very much like Alf Garnett saying ” if they want to live here, let ’em learn English “.
Incidentally,I found yet another way my taxes are being frittered away.
I was flipping through one of those empty-headed celebrity magazines that my daughter has to read for educational purposes, and there was a full-page advert about the census.
Along with the usual stuff about you have to complete it because it’s important was a little comic strip.
It told of a young woman who missed a blind date with a gorgeous chap because her bus didn’t turn up on time, presumably to bang home the fact to the air-heads who actually read this twaddle that the census does have an effect on real life.It promised another thrilling instalment next week.
Goodness knows how much money was squandered in the production and placement of this advert, but I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised in this age where adults are routinely addressed as helpless toddlers.Surely it should be enough to have in big letters on the front of the census form ” Complete this OR ELSE …. ?
It’s times like this, Anne , that you find out just whats hidden in the wood work, or in your case, your daughters magaziine.

Bumble Bee – if the census was only used for recording name, age, sex, profession at an address on a given day as a snapshot, as it used to be, then it would cost a great deal less and be a great deal less intrusive. If it is to be the last, as seems to be the case. then it is clearly regarded as being superfluous, which is why we are justified in asking why this one is taking place at all. Let alone in 55 languages.
By: Sky High - 14th March 2011 at 11:36
Pete. Stop being pedantic, you know very well where I am coming from, slowly but surly we are becoming the ethnic minority in our own Country, and English will not be the official language it will be a sort of Esperanto 🙂

My advice would be that it would be a very good idea indeed to complete your form this time. After follow-up calls to chase missing forms then any definite refusal will be classed as a “Class A” refusal and end up with the Non-Compliance Team for action.
As to your suggestion that 99% of people are putting them in the bin (which I rather doubt!) then it looks as if us guys will be pretty busy, then!

exactly!! , it is good to see someone with the capacity to understand !!
the plans for this to be the last one tells everything you need to know
if you are legaly here walk into any government building and give sparse details and they could realisticaly find out everything they need to know
( some things you don’t know )
it does not tell them anything about the huge ” illegal ” problem
as for the fine , i’ll risk it , i’ve never filled one in in 30 yrs and i’m not starting now !!
For my sins (there are many!) I am working on the Census during April. It looks as if I might be one of those whose door I am knocking on, then, Tornado – whoever you are!

Hi tornado 64, don’t you realise, just being on your comp, they can hack quite easily into it when your on it, and gather info you send and receive?.:diablo:

That G.A. is entirely their want if they wish, I would want to learn the lingo.
Now tell me why all these ex pats are still entitled to their state pensions, and also their annual heating allowance.when they chose to turn their backs on the Country which looked after them most of their lives.
C’mon, even you cant agree you need that in Spain, France, and Italy, they go and be ex pats, just to mainly be in the sunshine 365 or whatever the case may be.Lincoln .7
actualy spain can and does get bloody cold in winter !!
although you have a fair point , year round bills on heating will be cheaper
i honestly believe ( apart from pensions ) that all benefits of the british system should be stopped when you emmigrate
another is comming back rapidly to use the national health
why didn’t they use the un needed heating allowance on health plans to be treated in their country of choice ??

Presumably you feel the same way about Brit expats who buy homes in Spain, France and Italy and resolutely refuse to learn the local lingo and expect all the local tradesmen, etc, to speak English?
Don’t tell me they don’t exist. I work with two of them. :p

I absolutely disagree with that, the census has long been a very important periodic log of what the make up our country and those living within it consists of, something we can pride ourselves on since the Doomsday Book of 1086 and the modern census of the past 210 years.
This is how we statistically know how mixed our population is, and lets not forget, immensely helpful for those of us that enjoy doing family trees and researching this country’s past.
I do think it is worth spending money on, but perhaps a little too much has been spent on presentation, management, etc on what should only be a form or two.Hopefully Tornado’s friend (he did say 99%?!) will recieve the full penalty.
i’d accept that if governments actualy knew what they were doing with figures
and most historic family trees are taken from what is known as the register of electors !!
all the senseless does is collect information that is already held on you
put your hand on your heart and tell me ( without me laughing ) that a large percentage of immigrants are going to do that !!
hell there’s a big percentage dodging being caught ( i knew a few ) mainly kosovans when that conflict was on and talking to them could see why they fled
but the thing about asylum as it is defined is to escape to the first ” safe ” country , not the first lucrative one !!
i live and work in the uk
i have , national insurance , register of ellectors , paye , driving licence , pay rates ,
all my many details are already on the many government computers
all the information in the senseless is stuff they already know
and is held already yet we still give evermore information
at a time when the government said they are being over zealous about kept information on individuals
it is alegedley so they know where to spend money !!
all they are doing is cutting spending everywhere
so i realy cannot see a point in this old , outdated , farsicle system any longer
especialy as we are in an age where everything about us is held on computer
the money would be better spent on training government departments to talk to each other more effectively
or do you think it is acceptable for your local services to be cut
when money could have been found by scrapping this lunacy !!
By: tornado64 - 14th March 2011 at 09:46
. When I asked him about it he said that was only way he could get anyone to work there. Applications for jobs were studiously ignored by the English. And conditions were good and pay the average or just above average for the area. Says it all really, doesn’t it?
there are too many factors why that happens
i was out of work for 3 yrs ( and not ashamed to say it ) i have had to change jobs because of dissabillities in my arms
my new job is exceptionaly good conditions and above average pay
i have no debts and live humbly
i love the work i am doing now
yet my take home pay is around 200-300 pounds a month under what i need to basicaly scrimp by on i do not drink or smoke , run a car and rareley go on holiday
my sister has not had a realistic wage rise in well over ten years yet in that time prices have skyrocketed and she is constantly in debt just paying bills
our minimum wage or just over is fine if you like communal living ( wich most immigrants do do )
but if you are the average brit it wouldn’t keep a cat nowadays !!
