No, I haven’t got them. They went a few years after the war. If only. Yes, I know the value. Sod the SA one (though historically perhaps more desirable) the SS dagger with inscription may as well be made of 22 carat gold!

Jim Finch was his name. An NCO with the RAF Regiment, AA gunner. Did the job during the Battle, landed in Normandy a few days after the invasion attached to a Canadian Typhoon Wing (which is wheer my Typhoon interest sprung from – and he could remember parts of Golleys book, such a sthe 109 streaking down the runway guns blazing), saw Bodenplatte from the ground, became a driver, and through this job sat in on the Nuremberg trials, drove Atlee amongst others.

He died this year, and I won’t ever forget him. A treasure to know.

So who resprayed them, when, and how do newly applied decals affect the asking price?

I very much doubt, from that picture, that they wear the original, mint condition, paint with which they were applied from the factory. If not original finish, about £20 each tops trade, maybe £40 to a mug.

Snappers always been a real top bloke, a good egg, a Prince among men, salt of the earth, and to cap it all he has an excellent taste in hats.

You seem to forget that something is only worth what someone else will pay for it, and they can’t be worth that much or he’d have sold them a thousand times over. A lot more of this is suddenly resurfacing as the old boys who brought it back are dying and families are just getting rid. Do you have any provenance with the helmets, that may help your friend get higher prices. But, for us in the UK, those prices seem absolutely extortionate.

Try the Barras Market in Glasgow , there are always helmets and bits of gear for sale in there , I also spoke to a local collector and he reckons that there were thousands made so they are pretty common , I bought an SS helmet with a liner and chinstrap from the guy and it cost me $85 , I sold it to a mate ( who still has it ) for $90. You do have to watch out for fake stuff which is made in Thailand . Probably the only bit of German kit which is worth any money is an SA dagger with the Ernst Rohm inscription intact .
Is this kind of stuff hard to get in Australia ?? , there is still loads of the stuff floating around the UK .

Hmmmm, ok well I’ll tell him, I know that these are worth it because I’ve seen the prices of what they are worth on the net.

I have to agree with Ian , I have a Luftwaffe Tin Hat and a Luftwaffe pilots headset , chinstrap etc and I think I paid about $40-45 for each of them , the price does seem excessive.

Speaking from a personal point of view, the excessive price is a likely factor for the lack of interest. I have a wartime helmet which I bought, with a gasmask, for £20. I’m therefore unlikely to pay these sorts of prices!

I can’t believe that everyone here is not interested.
