Wont the Russians have a hi-lo mix which will be the T-50 an the uprated Su-35s. And wont Mig will exist in the sense that most of its designers etc are probably already amalgamated within UAC.

Maybe the RuAF think that short range interceptor type aircraft does not always make sense for a vast landmass like Russia… maybe they want stratigic depth and would like to have the airforce based farther away from borders..

Mig-35 parts can still be used on future aircraft upgrades cant they? Not all is lost.

So what did the IAF actually pay for in the C-130s?

Not been able to find out any reason why they are so expensive!

Same reason they don’t convert some the US Navy D-5 Trident missiles to conventional weapons against harden targets (ie think Iran nuke facilities) by replacing the nuclear warheads with hard steel warheads. It would be a fast way to start an accidental nuclear war.

I would say in 20 to 30 years time when missiles have proliferated a bit more you may have an issue. But the location of the US physically in the world and its current mahoosive stockpile of nuclear weapons just means that most countries would probably want to wait till the bombs explode before they try and lob something back (even if they could lob something back).

Please humour the hypothesis below, there maybe some holes in it for sure but i am not really out to write a 30 page document.

If you do a risk analysis of a bomb coming your way, unless you were Russia or maybe China, you would want to look at the below.

1) Do i have any weapons that can be a threat to the US or cause damage to the roots of the US war machine
2) Do i have enough nuclear warheads to deter or match the level of destruction the US can put apon me (does not have to match the same number of WMDS just the amount of damage caused to infrastructure and economy)
3) Can my country (whoevers country it is) enter into a exchange with the US and come out of it looking still somewhat like a functional state?
4) Am i so small that even if 1 nuclear strike hits i would be oblitorated (if so then i will loose all of my weapons and atleast bloody the US).

If the answer to the first 3 is no then you would most likely take whats dished out by the US, this is not acounting the insanity quotient which basically says f-it i do not care i just want to bloody them and i dont care if my country is wiped off the face of the world.

If you say yes to 4 then well you have nothing else to loose so well you might as well go down fighting, but if you are so small and not already a US ally would you really have a nuclear capability?

Would be worthwhile for India to get an mc-130. Has anyone. thought of putting mlrs on aircraft nylon? After quick calc you could fit 19 x 400kg rockets under the wing of the Hercules. If I have guessed the correct fuel and conversion.

Flying at 22k feet you could extend the range of your smerch range weapon considerably and have a relatively flexible platform to fire relatively cheap munitions above 250kms away. Not a artillery replacement but cheap enough to be usefully. Only problem would be reading unless you fire from side like the AC130.

That would be tantamount to large diameter rockets via rocket pods.200kg warhead each with ins guidance or anti radar seeker.

This is assuming you know beforehand how many and what type combatants you are going to meet.

Its a good thing that Hawk issue is resolved and we are going for more of these.

As happy as i can be to see the IAF finally get its first AJT (some years ago) i was still a bit confused as how BAe could have won over its competition considering the age etc of the trainer in the first instance! also the AJT was mired in controversy where it didnt really need to be and BAE should have known better!

My original post was more of a lament on the original choice rather than anything else and well BAE kind of have a record (saudi contract of EFA) of having questionable sales policies shall we say.

Also people lament about all the different types of aircraft the IAF have and yes i appreciate the expense associated with maintaining all sorts of aircraft however in a bunfight actually i do believe in strength in diversity, maybe thats just the India side of me!

I’ll tell you a little story. I was once in the process of buying a house in England. Lawyers were handling the affair. I went to see them at one point and asked how long it would take to do the search (to check no road is about to go through the house / there is no public footpath through the garden etc). They said it would take about a week. It takes about 30 minutes in reality at the town hall about 500m from their office so I told them a week was ridiculous – all they had to do was send someone to the town hall and the whole thing would be wrapped up in an hour or so. I told them I would go and do it myself if they thought it took a week. Next day they had done the search.

From the outside in that is what it looks like with some of the projects we talk about…

Not only this if you look at some of the ambitious things attempted on items that are not relevent to making a technology or item work it feels like segments of units are using the work they do as stepping stone to get a job outside of India. There is a lot of these etheral creatures now and the fact that Indian defense institutes are nothing more than carreer moves to outside India is not much of a secret.
