Research is unprofitable.
I have a issue with this statement not with yourself Witcha, this is the third or fourth time i have heard this and frankly this is not my opinion but a fact.. Those sentiments that you echo (i.e. they might not be your own) are the very reason why India will never be a developed country!
If it wants to be developed then people and industrialist need to start looking at things from a different perspective. i.e. think long term.
R&D is profitable but in the long term!
Example.
DRDO or the Indian MOD give company x (apologies will do materials based example)…
10million dollars for a public private partnership where the government covers covers 50% of the cost of the research and the stipulation is that the IP generated is owned by the company but benifits India only.
Company X embarks on this project and does not make any profit on it during the 5-10 years (normal gestation time for any lab – production based project)
Company X at the end of 10 years has generated IP, trained up its work force on a novel process and procedure
Copany X now embarks on another 50/50 work package of research with the governemtn
However in parrallel to this company X has now trained up a work force, set up the correct operating procedures and processes with which it is able to do bread and butter work and not only bid for contracts but develop its own products and market them for local defense contracts.
R&D is a tool that should be used in conjunction with bread and butter work… use the bread and butter to make the profit and use the R&D to learn the processes that will be the bread and butter of the future!
