The Indian government should have applied for Security Cooperative Participant (SCP) status on the F-35 program as a way of hedging its bets for the AMCA, just in case.
Why do you say that? because of the Surface to Air Weapons? If because of that it shouldn’t change anything now, i mean the Chinese armed forces have been known to own the S-300 etc for sometime which would be very problematic for the IAF.
The IAF or the Indian Armed forces need the long range cruise missile more than anything keep funding electronic warfare units.
Apparently the Chinese Artillery have tested a new Surface to Air missile on the Tibetan plateau somewhere north west of Ladakh.
The missile is specially developed to operate from the high region.
This would be problamatic if the IAF were to take a attacking stance.
But a variant of this form from the Iranian Navy is giving the USN a bit of a second thought, i wouldnt go as far as calling it a night mare but a bunch of cheap missile boats are food for thought for the USN.
I would agree that cost wise the system would not necessarily be cheaper than a single corvette however or be in a position to completely replace a “normal” navy configuration.
There are some benifits I can see from these types of systems. I would see these boats as additional to a “standard navy” allowing them to be in many places, with dispersed group where the cost of ISR or BAMS for the agressor goes up.
Another possibility of these types of “swarms” is to have the armed boats being remotely controlled (during the action phase, maintenance etc i know could potentially go up) by the “intelligent” boats with the sensors reducing the danger to sailors.
I agree that these types of systems would need some form of Air support but this is where I think the P-8A and combination of MQ-4’s and other UCAVs could provide great support.
I can see this system being used for special purposes such as over coming Anti ship ballistic missiles.
It will fly and the IAF will find a role for it to suit the short falls it has… So obsolete it may not be… A failed and badly managed project yes.
Other thing to consider if the journalist only mentions TEJAS so he may be talking of the FOC dates of the LCA MK2…
A small possibility…
Apparently the IAC 1 has been delayed by 3 years and possed issues for IAC 2 and more importantly the Indian Navies plans to field 2 CBG’s by 2015…
Apparently report from EuroSatory has it that the Nirbhay Cruise missile is getting closer to flight testing.
Plans are to have versions of it for Air to Ground, Surface to Surface etc with the Su-30MKI being used for the Air to ground delivery.

The last point you mentioned, about A2A missile testing with BVR active guided missiles was confirmed in that very article that this guy posted..
Matt’s comprehension skills are abysmal, as was proven when the article he himself posted clearly mentioned that a BVR test with the Derby/R-77 is likely soon, and then he states that the IAF will only use the Tejas for dropping bombs ! Pathetic !
all the internet warriors calling me names or (trying to) bullying me should realise that the personal attacks aren’t suddenly going to make the LCA MK1 a success.. further it will not make the LCA MK1 suddenly relevant…
If you actually knew anything about the LCA program, you’d know the A2A missile testing (BVR) is planned for the IOC to FOC transition and will be conducted after IOC. In IOC the rest of the sensor weapons ecosystem, including the radar will be validated.
The IAF expects the LCA to be multirole.
Dont understand your point, are you highlighting how far delayed the whole LCA circus has gotten?
The LCA still dropping dumb bombs makes sense in light of the article below. So there is some progress the project isnt still stuck in a tar pit.

Suprised there hasn’t been more news about the air to air missile firing apart from that reported in 2007 and 2010. Specially for the trials.
maybe the IAF wont focus on the LCA being a short range fighter/interceptor and focus its energies on bombing runs only…
when you have such limited knowledge, why do you pass judgement on something you don’t even have the least bit of idea about !? 😡
Its an opinion just like the opinion you just passed above, i understand your monikar is blackarcher, but it is not any reason to be an internet warrior.
far as I know dumb bombs are in the same family as guided bombs or munitions unless that guided munition is powered.
Whether it is a KAB or something from the US it is still a item that is droped from an aircraft and travels to the destination under gravity and not through any propulsion of its own, unless you start talking of the air to ground missiles.
I also do not think that there is an increase in complexity between launching a bomb with a added laser or gps guidance kit or a bomb with nothing on it. It does not need anythign extra from the LCA to be able to drop one or the other once the wiring etc have been added to the aircraft during manufacturing and the software is in place.
Hence the comment, after all this time, and remember that the first dumb bomb was dropped many years ago, the LCA is still droping dumb bombs and does not seem to have progressed onto anything more complex. It was also a comment taking into consideration the relatively short legs of the LCA compared to the other aircraft in the IAF inventory. it was a comment also taking into consideration that the IAF have aircraft purposefully design to drop dumb bombs and does not need the LCA to do it.
Precision guidance = smart bomb, therefore /= dumb bomb.
so what kind of typical precision munitions are in existance and what do the IAF have?
Precision-guided munitions are not dumb bombs, or in the same family.
Why not in the same family? what would qualify them for another family?
are you incapable of reading ? I stated PGMs and dumb bombs.
so is PGM a word?
Either way they are still in the same family as “dumb bombs” …
I have no problems with the types of bombs the IAF want to drop, and to be honest it doesnt really matter if i have a problem with it or not.
What shocked me was an apparently tardyness in flight testing and getting the aircraft operational, it seems a age since the LCA droped its first dumb bomb.
