Theres a lot to choose from from different Genres, but it’d have to be Dave Murray from Iron Maiden for me. He’s one of the very few that can make a very complicated piece look very easy to play. I wouldn’t want to challenge him to a solo duel.

My lovely sweetheart has taken quite a fancy to my Gibson Les Paul Custom ‘Black Beauty’…

…Where we live, two bedroomed (ruddy big rooms) flat, obviously one for us, and we have the other we’ve made a jamming & chilling out room. Two walls have my collection if Gibson & Ibanez Guitars and Marshall, Orange, Mesa Boogie amps, heads & cabs & a few other things, and Kellz has her quite large but seriously cool looking Premier/Tama drum kit etc….My Gibson Les Paul ‘Black Beauty’ is always put back right next to her drum kit. I hang it back up where I normally have it but strangely enough it always ends up next to her drum kit…She was playing it tonight and I asked why she very rarely plays the others, she looked at me with an evil but charming & lovely grin and said, ‘I like this one!’

    Hmmm…I think thats a hint! 😀

And, very happy to say – after a rant on here a few weeks ago! Gibson have announced that, albeit a while ago, they’re going to produce more ‘Les Paul Classic Custom’ models (these newer versions). So they’ll be on the go for quite a long time. And I could possibly buy one of them…Very, very pretty!!! And sounds very evil! :diablo:

MBDA is satisfied with the results of its recently-completed live firing campaign with the Meteor beyond visual-range air-to-air missile (BVRAAM), and will deliver its first production rounds before year-end, says Andy Bradford, the company’s chief engineer and head of the project.

Three electronic protection measures firings conducted at the Aberporth test range off the west Wales coast earlier this year from Panavia Tornado F2 trials aircraft resulted in direct hits on Selex Galileo Mirach target drones, Bradford says, despite their use of jamming equipment and chaff.

    ~

MBDA will deliver a final performance statement to the Meteor integrated joint project office within the next month, with Bradford saying the design is compliant with its lethality and kinematic performance requirements. It is expected to receive final acceptance later this year, before production deliveries commence in the fourth quarter to the UK.

Meteor due for operational service for RAF Typhoon, 2015-16.

In other news, Tactical Report has reported that Kuwait are in talks with BAE Systems for a number of Typhoons.

    Very nice images, thankyou.

What is a ROKAF T-50 doing in the UK? Training with RAF Typhoons and perhaps getting a bit more of an insight of the aircraft, since the ROKAF could ( I say could…) purchase this aircraft in October?

    Okay, thanks.

Are we likely to hear something about Restore and Strongbow coming out of Farnborough?

A real good argument could be made that if Britain had had the 50,000 ton CVAs, Argentina would not have invaded in the first place.

That old chestnut again. It didn’t matter what Britian had, Argentina would have invaded anyway. The Argies didn’t believe Britian would respond with military action and they believed, and still do so, that what they did was correct and they also believed that most of the world would have took their side and condemn Britian’s military response.

    @Mildave,

You’ve no idea what would have been the sorties ratio. Given that CATOBAR aircraft can remain airborne longer and with a bigger payload while operating further, comparing the two capabilities on sortie generation only is flawed.

Neither do you. But the RAF and Royal Navy FAA had a clue, yet despite knowing the longer ranges and bigger payloads of the Phantoms and Buccaneers they claim the Harriers operating from HMS Hermes and HMS Invincible was the best choice due to being able to operate in rough seas and poor weather, where as the CATOBAR aircraft would have struggled. How many times does this have to be stated!

Please don’t give me the Falklands. Would the Harrier have been the fighter of choice have the UK possessed at the time a full carrier strike group capability?

Yes. And The Falklands War is a very good example!

Thanks for the additional information, Jackonicko. Rather interesting.

Would Restore and Strongbow (I still haven’t the faintest idea what these are or involve) come inbetween these Drops or are they planned for after these and P1EA and B & such?

There seems to be an awful lot of upgrades & enhancements in the pipe line.

The Royal Air Force Tranche 1 fleet are to be upgraded following the recent delivery of the Drop 2 upgrade package

Following the closure of the Tranche 1 Main Development Contract between NETMA and Eurofighter the UK established a Capability Sustainment Team within BAE Systems. This team was initially utilised to develop an upgrade called Tranche 1 Drop1 that subsequently saw active service as part of the Typhoon Fleet deployed in support of Operation ELLAMY in Libya.

Following development of the Tranche 1 Drop 1 package, European partner Nations were invited to participate in the development programme. The second upgrade package, known as Drop 2, is now entering service with the Royal Air Force, having been developed through a Mutual Support Agreement between Nations that involved BAE Systems and the SUZ organisation based at Manching, Germany.

The Drop 2 product will provide capability updates to a wide range of Typhoon avionic systems covering the Displays and Controls, Attack and Identification, Defensive Aids and Communication Sub Systems whilst also delivering availability and sustainability improvements to the Tranche 1 Fleet.

The first flight of a Tranche 1 Typhoon with the new product embodied took place at RAF Coningsby on 2nd May 2012 and was conducted by 17(R) Test and Evaluation Squadron, where it will continue to be assessed over the coming months ahead of its roll out to the Tranche 1 fleet.

Following the successful first flight, Robert Forshaw, Drops Desk Officer within the MOD Defence Equipment &Support Fast Air Support Typhoon team said: “The success of this upgrade programme has demonstrated the ability of BAE Systems to deliver Weapon System improvements, integrated with a tailored support solution, to the Royal Air Force in collaboration with their Industrial partners.

The team have overcome some significant challenges to get to this stage and that’s testament to the working relationships between BAE Systems, the German SUZ and QinetiQ teams involved in the project. I would like to pass on my personal thanks to everyone involved in the project and I look forward to working with them again on the Drop 3 and 4 programmes.”

Andy Flynn, Head of Contract Engineering Services for NETMA said: “This close working relationship is an integral part of how we will work as a management and delivery team on Contract 1 – the engineering services contract which is the first tangible delivery of a joint transformation programme between Industry and NETMA. Contracts 1 and 4 were signed in March 2012.

First time I’ve heard of Drop 3 and 4 programmes, I don’t recall hearing about them before.

The second prototype of the Mirage III V reached mach 2 btw.

Thats an aircraft with, theres no other way of saying this, some nine jet engines! In theory it worked and it reached Mach 2. However those are areas that were greatly over-shadowed by other areas that would have been hugely unacceptable. It would have drank more than Oliver Reed, it would have been an maintenance nightmare for the ground crew, cost an absolute fortune to operate and of course maintain, too much unnecessary weight there for greatly reducing it’s payload and range, thus not making it a very effective combat aircraft in both A/A and A/G.

The Mirage III V was certainly one VTOL aircraft the world didn’t need.

You can have helicopters for very urgent needs, and planes parked elsewhere for general needs. No need to spend billions to develop a plane just for this. Besides I doubt lengthening an airfiled takes all that long.

If you can invent a helicopter that can get to a particular area at speeds of 500+mph at 25,000+ft carrying various number of 1,000lb bombs, you’ll have a valid point. If not then the Harrier is the tool to have if your runway is a bit d*cky and you need to get somewhere at a fair old lick.

Same as above. An real carrier would have allowed F4 ops in the first place. A carrier or two would allow to protect the islands long enough for the few days it would take to lengthen the airfield.

Are you sure about that? Due to the very bad, wild weather in the South Atlantic at that time, it was doubted by many in the RAF and Royal Navy that they could’ve operated “real” carriers with Buccaneers & Phantoms in such conditions.

I wasn’t aware of the Luftwaffe situation with PIRATE, thanks for explaining, Fedaykin.

When one realizes the requirements of the six Typhoon users it doesn’t come as a surprise that each of their Typhoons are different in a lot of areas to one another. Saudi and British units probably come closest to being similar. For what Austria needs them for, the Hawk 200 would’ve probably been logical.

TR1, they’ll still have a defence system but nothing of the calibre of the other users. Think of each users as; Austria has the Aston Martin V8 Vantage, Germany, Italy and Spain have the Aston Martin DB9 and Saudi Arabia and Britian have the Aston Martin DBS.
