Early USAF estimates were at about $5-10 billion to develop the FB-22 out of the F/A-22. If the current Raptor production lines can be used to produce most, it not all of any FB-22, then the unit cost might not be too much higher than what the Raptor is today. Could also depend on the production run too.
Sounds like a cool film.. Could be some interesting shots and video of the FLANKERs.
GDL, the J-10, whether one or two seat version, is not officially public.
But from the PLAAF watcher’s standpoint, the first hint of flight was in a FC-1 related article in September 2003 which said Chengdu and the FC-1’s lead designer was expecting first flight of an unnamed two-seat fighter at the company in December of that year.
So the J-10B was believed to have flown at the end of 2003. We started getting pictures about two months ago.
Ok, I should have said how long have the photos been available from an open/public source? Thanks for the answer GD. 🙂
Are the airport Operations part of the off-base exercises?
Another one here…. 🙂
According to Bill Gunston’s Encyclopedia of Russian Aircraft, Yakovlev told Stalin that the Su-11 was ‘just another Me262 copy’,thus putting Yakovlev’s designs in a favourable light.
And I think it was the Yak-15 competing at the time?

Where were those photos taken? In Russia?
Thanks KJ! 🙂
Have we reached the point today where the western warship would be unable to penetrate the defences of a similar opponent, even while firing the entire salvo?
I don’t know about today Mike Echo. The Russians for example have had CIWS guns and short-range, as well a medium-long-range missiles capable of intercepting Harpoon-type weapons for sometime now.
As a contrast Russia, has continously been developing anti-ship missiles with much higher speeds and far greater range. The result is the capability to fire outside “NATO” range and possibly overwhelm the target with high speed missiles.
That was the old Soviet fleet’s cold war doctrine, just what you described. These supersonic long range missiles like the SS-N-22 and such have been around for many years now.
Recent developments in the Indian and Chinese navies points towards a strategy of surface warships with strong anti-air capability and up to 16 supersonic anti-ship missiles. These ships are undoubtly planned to be capable of taking on enemy warships themselves, with or without aircover.
Operating close to home I would think would be more likely if they are on their own, which in wartime is unlikely. I doubt they would ever be operating alone if they were engaging an enemy fleet far from home. The Surface Action Group, or SAG, would have it’s own fleet of organic air in several helos, and the group would combine it’s own anti-air defences to defend against counter-attack. Big new Chinese and Indian DDGs just make the task force mission stronger.
Has the Western navies lost their ability to operate against these Eastern navies without aircraft or nuclear submarines?
I don’t think the two have ever been exclusive of the each other when you consider modern day high threat wartime Ops.
it should be a respectable entry into the SSN world even in 2010.
With all the Russian help received, and the way Russia’s own tech has developed over the last decade, yes I agree.
Arriving in Shanghai, the Thai Navy’s Taksin (422) and the Saiburi (458)
Taksin is a F25T commisioned in 1996. The top down photo definitely shows that the Mk-41 VLS listed as one of the systems in most publications is missing.
The Saiburi is one of four 053T/HT FFGs. It entered the fleet in 1992.
Great shots!! 🙂
The Mk.41 VLS acquisition was deferred years ago because of the funding crisis from the Asian currency meltdown. It appears that they decided NOT to buy it after all anyway. It was only going to be an 8-cell bank fitted with Sea Sparrow.
The Vietnamese and Indonesian navies have nothing in their fleet big enough to carry a good number of them yet. Unless they intend to make them air-launched via their FLANKER units?
Got any more pics of the model KJ? Baseline 7 AEGIS gives them a TBMD capability if they need or want it. I know the Japanese are going for it with SM-3, have the Koreans shown interest in it too?
Yet another Arleigh Burke incarnation….. Cool. I was hoping to see something a little more original though. 😉
Optically I like the twin-seater way much better than the J-10A.. Certainly this bird looks cool..
So how long has the this J-10B been officially public?
