    From Milparade

A proposed upgrade the existing shipboard AK-630 to AK-630M with 9M311-1M (SA-N-11) missiles tagged on the sides. Not Khastan, but close.

I am afraid I dont share your enthusiasm about the Shtil-1 System. It is wholly inadequate for both anti-air and anti-missile duties. I dont think that the Shtil-1 is the first, second or even the third choice of the IN. It was procured probably because of Russian hard sell and arm twisting that has become public in the Gorshkov saga.

Yet the Russians are building the Shtil-1 into a VLS bank. Have the Indians payed for this to be done, as a request? The Russians have never had Shtil installed on any of their vessels in VLS. It may not be the best system available, and perhaps the Indians were pressured into it, but have the Indians tried to improve on it it by having it vertiacly launched, which vastly improves the rate of fire? Just wondering.

The F-15 was considered for the ADV role but its radar judged insufficiently long ranged. The F-14 met the requirements but too expensive.

What the RAF F-14 might have looked like.

Makes me wonder why China had to buy those two new Sovremannies.

Progress on the 052C and its weapons system are so fast that it makes the 956EM and the 052B look like PCs—obsolete before they’re in service.

Makes one wonder indeed, but I think the Sovs make a valuable addition in the numbers game. Basically the first two were bought in I believe as a ‘stop gap’ deterrent in an effort to ward off American Carriers with their Sunburn supersonic AShMs. With more time on their hands, the Chinese have been able to tailor-build the second two Sovs, the 956EM, to better suit their requirements. I mean who knows how long it will be before we see a 3rd and 4th 052C class, and even more of the simpler 052B? In the meantime the Sovs, eventually all 4 of them, make up the numbers, and with their still potent standard and improved Sunburn anti-ship missiles, make fairly capable additions. And at the same time improving the numbers of heavily armed hulls that the PLAN can have ready to sail at any one time.

Three Akula-II subs – Viper, Nerpa and Gepard – are already commissioned in the Russian Navy. These were inducted in 1995, 2000 and 2001 respectively.

Thats interesting. My sources (inc. Janes) say NERPA is an Improved AUKLA I, not AKULA II. Thanks for the articles Austin, they help.

In the shot with the HIND, what is with all the radars in the background? Surveillance for sure, but why SO many?

    168(052B), 169(052B), 170(052C) and 525(054) in ZhouShan yesterday!

Impressive shot! I must say you can see the similarity in the designs well with this shot. Finanly the PLAN is starting to look like a modern state-of-the-art force. Let’s see if they can perform as well as they look.

    Thanks digdream.. 🙂

I think the Indians do intend to use them that way as well.

    From the Brahmos website
    http://www.brahmos.com/images/trajecteries.jpg

And while I agree with Garry, these weapons would be very hard to intercept, have very short flight times, and with large warheads and high supersonic kinetic energy, direct hits from a couple of them on anything lighter then a small frigate would mean the target literally disappearing! Larger than that, and you are very likely to mission kill the target. An effective weapon for the right target.

Has sukhoi or anyone else released a drawing of the potential PAK-FA? I mean we don’t know how this thing will look like at all
1)All we know it will be a twin engined heavy fighter to replace Mig-29 and Su-27
2)We don’t know what kind of configuration will it be, where it’s intakes are going to be placed, what type of wing it will have or anything.

I suspect we are going to know pretty soon Srbin.

In August of this year, the whole lineup of domestic airplane construction will be demonstrated within the framework of the MAKS-2004 aviation show in the Moscow suburb of Zhukovskiy

Looks like it might be next month when we see a concept model of it. Let’s hope so! Can’t wait.

I hope you are aware of the Russian tendency of arm twisting; they dont allow you to pick and choose – its either all or none approach. Shtil is probably one of those deals; it is tied to something the IN desperately needs.

I am aware, and I can see what you mean. And if Barak can be paired off with a CIWS gun system, then I too would agree it would make the better combination. You mentioned Millenium? Do you refer to the Swiss 35mm GDM-008 ‘rotary’ gatling gun? Are the Indians looking at it?

is it true the Apache cant fire the main guns without firing all its hellfires ?

I would find that hard to believe.
