Allies is probably the wrong word. I just meant whoever the Chinese government wants to pretend to be the friend of to use as a pawn in their global political games. Countries like Pakistan, Burma and Iran probably regard themselves as allies of China though, although these political things change like the wind. Pls correct me if I’m wrong 🙂
Actually, I’ve just thought of a better way to say what I’m trying to say. It’s like Battle-cruisers; they weren’t designed to be used as battleships but once a comander had them, he inevitably used them as battleships. The same goes for China’s blue water navy, regardless of the navy’s regionalised intentions when they built them, Chinese politicians now have global reach and wouldn’t be able to resist employing it. Where the battle-cruiser analogy falls down, is that in China’s case using these new toys beyond their intended scope might not lead to disaster 😉
Considering the new SSBNs I’d suggest global power-projection is already here 😉
I think “peace time” and “limited war” global power projection is on the cards – not as in a full blue water fight with USN in Atlantic, but as in China deploying frigates to global hotspots in support of her “allies”, and to make US led global “policing” harder. For example, if China sides with say Iran in a scenario where USN is leading multi-national blockade/intimidation patrols in Persian Gulf, PLAN now has the capability to deploy frigates to act as a buffer and inhibit US action through fear of political escalations. Not saying it will definitely happen that way, but Chinese politicians now have the capability to deploy a limited force far overseas and I think they’ll find it hard to resist as and when such an option appears beneficial, regardless of the strategy behind their procurement plans.
There’s also the alleged naval base in Burma, and I’d imagine soon agreements to use other alligned ports
Every nation in the world has some sort of defence force
Except Wales, but then no one would want to conquer them anyway. And the Independent Commune of Brum, that only has an Attack force.
Seriously though when did the UK military start wearing their uniforms in public anyway when ‘off-duty’? – back in the IRA days it was a strict no-no.
Theoretically you could nuke via UPS or FedEx so I guess the world should disband their militaries right? Afterall they’re just fundwasters.
The UPS one would take longer.
Just to throw in my European perspective, the whole anti-Airbus reaction is basically just a blind xenophobia with little real basis in the comparative merits of the tenders. Remember that US is widely seen as bullying countries into buying its arms in favour of their local equivalents.
Some would say that US is a superpower on the brink of decline with China, India and Russia on the rise. Maybe the next 50 years will see much more hardware bought abroad.

well spotted. Actually that’s me highlighting them in MS paint by drawing over them. They are real, but they ren’t clear in the screen captures of the video because it’s too hazy.
Su-50 Firtyyearsbehind 🙂
I suspect that the item in between the Bridge and the 76mm might be a launcher for MANPAD’s. As for the Phalanx copy- to the best of my knowledge Iran never recieved Phalanx so I have no idea where they would have got one from, and I doubt that they have the knowhow to design one from scratch.
On a side note, this thing looks rather top heavy, it might not be but all the weapons seem to be mounted quite high up on the super-sructure.
The model that illustration was based on turns out to differ from the real ship in some details. Recently a video of the ship was released showing that the arment forward of the bridge consisted of two manned 20mm light AAA, one each side – um, hardly high tech lol. In the video the 76mm main gun has yet to be fitted and we don’t get o see the rear of the ship.

A commercial failure (no sales) but not a technical failure.
Yeah if only they had the Davide radar guided ‘smart’ round back then
Great posts as always SOC.

good points now I get it. 🙂
Stepping forwards to stealth applications, is it not a good idea to have weapons ‘pop’ out of the top of the aircraft rather than the bottom so that you have fewer panels etc on the bottom?
Taking that idea a bit further, why not take off and land upside down relatively speaking, especially for a UCAV where you don’t have to worry about pilot comfort and safety? That way all the access panels/areas, gear doors and weapons bay are on the bottom on the ground, and on the top in normal flight regime?
Aren’t the RN adopting the fully automated 30mm DS-30 MkII mount specifically to give close in defence against small boats etc?

(I think the rocket pack, if it contained laser guided rockets, would be a great idea but alas typical British cost cutting killed that idea I think.
