And then let the moaning commence, as you can be sure that not everyone will be happy. 😉 Provided there are no absolute howlers I am sure I will be happy, as will 99.95% of the audience.
In a similar vein I remember that when “Master & Commander” was being filmed which admittedly was only loosely based on various factual events combined with the 20 book series, the Patrick O’brian (author) websites were working themselves into a lather on similar issues particularly when they heard Russell Crowe was the lead, and people were saying Nelson would turn in his grave etc. When it came out it was probably the most authentic film of its genre ever made and the critics were forced to reconsider. After three years of further analysis by the self appointed experts on those websites very little has been found to be wrong with it within the limitations of a 2 hour film and the concesus is that Russell Crowe played Jack Aubrey very well. The film had links with & was distributed by Miramax, Universal & 20th Century Fox
Good historical films can happen even when funded by Hollywood, and if you have never seen the Worlds Fastest Indian (about an old boy and his motorbikes) as mentioned previously you really should, as it is rather good, and never got the distribution it deserved.
Lets wait and see about this one 😀
Latest from today’s Telegraph. Basically BAE and VT don’t want to play with the French 😮

Agreed, the next order might not be until May 2009 as they seem to be placing orders approx every 2 years. With a typical 25 year lifecycle I guess this points to a long term fleet of 11-14 SSN’s and SSBN’s built in Barrow.
What day in June does Astute have her launching ceremony ?
My options would be slightly more affordable for the RAF;
Get the 330MRTT tanker thing moving, it is taking FAR too long and surely cannot be much more expensive than the current Tristar & VC10 museum pieces which are apparently very unreliable.
2/3 more C-17’s (this may be happening anyway)
Keep the A-400 Commitment
A few more Merlin BUT retire a lot of the other Helicopters in the near 500 RAF/army/RN machine fleet, as there are a lot of smaller and older types that probably are not as busy as they could be compared to those on Ops which is where the shortages are.
Review decision not to fit Radar to the Harriers due to continued delay on the CVF’s. I am sure they have the radars sitting in a shed somewhere from the Sea Harriers on a ‘just in case’ basis. Integration might be expensive though so a compromised solution might be required without full integration of weapons etc.
Do we really need a further upgrade of the Tornado’s at X billion, as is being considered when there is clearly a pressing demand for aircraft that we can use in theatre ? Money would be better spent elsewhere.
Go and ask uncle Sam if we can buy a few of the Many A-10A’s parked at AMARC (20-25 should do). We should have had this aircraft years ago. This wouldn’t be cheap as some upgrades and training obviously needed but we wouldn’t be talking billions either and there is a need for a machine with its capabilities. This will extend the life of the very few remaining and heavily used Harrier GR’s until the arrival of F-35. Some experts are saying the GR Harriers may run out of hours before it appears.
Half a dozen of the proposed weapons platform Nimrods that were being discussed about three years ago. Don’t fit any of the back seat expensive electronics (or the 8 extra crew) as in the MRA4, except DAS, a larger weapons bay and roll the aircraft as a long range stand off weapons delivery platform for Paveway and its derivatives, small smart munitinions, Stormshadow/Scalp etc. This would be cheaper than the MRA4’s and would add increased power projection ability. They do have the airframes for modernisation for this without digging them out of museums.
Finally a much longer range Storm shadow/Scalp which again would not be frighteningly expensive and to provide competition to the Tomahawk which has a lot of politics attached to its purchase.
All other commited expenditure to continue as planned. True there is a lot of classic British fudge in the above, but that is one thing we are actually quite good at.
That will do for starters. And then there is is navy and army to consider……………..:diablo:
Kinda, but they are nearly all being used for a wider remit now and many now have some overland recon ability (as well as stand off ground attack), so although they are expensive (eg the enormous cost of the new RAF Nimrod MRA4) they can do so many useful things that they probably represent very good value for a country. You could probably have an interesting debate as to if their anti submarine abilities are being compromised now that they appear to be evolving into Multi-role reconnaissance and attack platforms.
It can also offer you an extremely fast response and a long loiter time if you don’t have surface assets in the area.
Perhaps uncle Sam charges them landing fees ? :diablo:
They are clearly planning a very thorough testing phase for what must be considered a mature airframe design when they say that it doesn’t enter service until 2011 😮
Whatever they decide to to re the next generation LPH, in my view it has to have the ability to operate F-35 on an occasional basis to cover the loss of a CVH due to mechanical mishap, refit, attrition or them simply being in the wrong place in an emergency. The last bit might sound strange but the new FSTA air to air refueller will enable long range deployments of up to 4 escorted fighters at a time and the ability to fly in a small airgroup would be very handy on an LPH at short notice if say it was in the South China sea and the CVH’s were tied up at Rosyth 😉
Todays Sun. Probably best to take with a large pinch of salt as we all know the history of Sun ‘exclusives’ :diablo:

Of course there is the usual number of factual errors (it was only written by their chief reporter) and a rather fanciful graphic
Anyone in the North West might like to attend this re the construction plan for the CVF as its looks very interesting 😎 They might have some new images and a bit more detail on the general ships layout belowdecks.

You can be pretty sure its a debate that they have ‘done to death’ in the design office :diablo:
That must have been a really exciting time to be an aviation fan. It seems to me as if the UK government was issuing invitations to tender for new designs on a monthly basis and all sorts of wierd and wonderful stuff was coming back from the designers. 😎 Of course not a lot of it got built and that is another story, but certainly more new stuff seemed to be about then than now and quite a bit of it did fly
I was told by one of the Ground guys at STN that she was going to Prestwick to sort out the Landing gear and would then route to the far east for a larger refit. It does sound somewhat strange though so may not be completely accurate.
