You certainly don’t need two seats as said above. The A-10 ain’t bad at ground attack, and that doesn’t need a specialist weapons guy.
Or a Glow worm, or Temeraire (on a ship, not some training base) 😡
Sadly a great many names will never be re-used and some should never have been re-used regardless; HMS St Albans… forsooth …. No doubt I am heading into shoaling waters here, so I had better shut up. 😀
Interesting photos here. Perhaps this is a dumb question as I am in no way up to date on the helicopter industry, but are the Russians still a player in the large Helicopter market ? Has anyone from Europe or the USA attempted a strategic alliance with them for a modern heavyweight ? They must have learned a lot of lessons making the large machines over the years ………
You might try by going through this web page where there is some advice
The problem is with so many big ticket items e.g. Eurofighter, CVF, Astute, F35, expensive Nimrod upgrades plus the basic Type 45 buy, then the competition for money is going to be tight. On the horizon they are going to have to start spending money on research for the replacement of the Trident boats before long. The army also need up to 3500 FRES platforms it has been stated, and it plans to replace most of its few thousand trucks and light vehicles, so everyone wants what little available money there is.
Oh and I forgot to add that surely they will need some new Hawk trainers with controls similar to the F35 as well………………
As SealordLawrence says there is loads of space on board (it is a large ship) and can apparently be fitted with upgrades as required. I think I have read somewhere that the 155 gun can be retrofitted at a later date without a major rebuild. I would like to have seen a better ASW fit though particularly as there are so many new silent small coastal subs out there, and that could be a problem if amphibious force protection becomes part of the type 45’s role.
I am more disappointed that the number has been cut back. If they produce the two other varients the general service frigate and the land attack cruiser then it might not be so bad, but as has been said there is no appetite for this kind of spend in the UK at the moment despite the fact the the UK MOD has several global responsibilities.
Wanshan said “Do you realize that if a hangar can fit one EH 101 Merlin, it probably is large enough for 2 Lynx helicopters. (Given a choice between 2 Lynx and 1 Merlin, I’ld go for 1 Merlin.)” Or perhaps a lynx and an Apache for Littoral operations :diablo:
I guess as ever the RN will have to make the best of what its getting.
Thanks Austin that is very interesting. I have always wanted to know how they work.
The Euryalus, is one of those names that the RN keep re-using. I bet there have been at least 3 others. There was a Frigate in the 70’s with this name, I believe.
Is topweight such an issue in the Eastern med though ? Its not like these ships are likely to regularly experience a North Atlantic storm, heavy icing or the roaring 40’s ……………
Perhaps they took the decision not to worry due to their local conditions ?
I see that there was a load more in the Financial times today about the problems with the F-35 (Rolls engine cancelled and some other stuff) and the Defence minister admitting that they do have a plan B if they don’t end up buying the plane. He wasn’t specific though.
I would post a link but its subscription only
So that is pretty well the whole fixed wing compliment on deck in one go and a rescue copter 😀
Innovative take off method. I should send picture that to the MOD, just in case they are looking for another way to spend a whole load more of our money !! 😀 :diablo:
The latest car cooling fans have unequally spaced curved blades as well as stator vanes, no doubt for similar reasons….
Is the Hawkeye completely out of it though if the CVF’s go for STOVL ? I am sure I have read somewhere that NG reckoned they could get it to work on a STOVL carrier now it has been upgraded and had done some tests on a ski ramp with the older version. I think the only issue they had was the nosegear, which they reckoned was not insurmountable. Has this changed or have I confused this with something else ?
The other advantage of that set up would be that they could also buy the ‘trash hauler’ version from NG which although not essential is a ‘nice to have’ , when operating at long distances from the home base or nearest port.
Has there ever been a move to fit these to surface ships ?
So do you folks think that the idea that they will produced a stretched T45 as a cruiser (maybe with TacToms) and a shortened T45 as a frigate is a genuine option ? I can see it has its attractions to the bean counters.
No doubt they will wait and see if the Daring is any good first before deciding
