Duxford Diary: I don’t want to have to scroll through over 1200 entries to see the latest photos.
How can we get to the active end of the thread with one click?
I didn’t realise there was so much information available!
I am certainly in the market for one (after you, of course, AG) if there are any for sale.
Note that there is a weak link in the drive which ought not be omitted. You can see it well illustrated in the first of the pictures Dave has posted.
They look like this, AG. But I cannot see any part number on it, perhaps because of the coat of crackle paint. I could do with a new one myself, since the helical gear is completely worn out. Any offers?
Well said Geoff! There are too many people trying to edit others’ opinions.
“Why did GTO have to leave Duxford ???? “
Perhaps because IWM has just realised that it does not have roundels on it? The fact that the Auster was the type on which the Army Air Corps was founded is lost on them. There are no other Austers on show there.
And, BTW, this was just about the only aircraft on Duxford which was easy for kids and wheelchair users to look into.
Those displays in the WW1 Wellington exhibition are [I]so good![I]
I doubt whether there are any museum displays in the UK which come anywhere near the standard of these.
It caused a bit of a panic, too. A panel from the fuselage must have come off the trailer when it was being moved, causing speculation at Henlow that it had fallen from a flying aircraft since it was found on the road in line with the approach to the runway. See the following e-mail exchange:

Hello,
I found this piece of plywood on the A507 underneath short final 26, I’m pretty shore it belongs to an aircraft arriving or departing Henlow!! It’s a little bit damaged but could be reused or perhaps as a pattern for its replacement. I’m staying at Henlow Lakes until next Wednesday, if you know the owner please pass on my email and if they wish to collect it I’d be happy to arrange collection.
Many thanks,
Colin.
“One of Duxford’s oldest and most precious residents”
Unfortuately, IWM does not share this view, and the Auster is to leave Duxford by the end of the year. Presumably it is not warlike enough.
It seems that they have failed to apprehend that the Auster series of spotting planes was the cornerstone of what became the Army Air Corps, and that a single Auster in the field, with an artillery regiment behind it, could call down more sudden and complete devastation on the enemy than a whole squadron of Lancasters.
A book published last year called “Warlike Sketches” by Arrol Macfarlane gives a very good account of the kind of service seen by the Army Austers. He logged 389 operational sorties, many of them under fire, which bears comparison with the 30 or so missions which comprised an operational tour in Bomber Command. It is a pity that the Austers’ work is not more appreciated.
“I think the single bay hanger should be rebuilt, and then use it for a B of B exhibition, and include showings of the film. “
Or as a permanent location for DX17 ? ? ?
Reviving an old thread – The BRE (Building Research Establishment) was open on Saturday 9th 2017 as a part of the Heritage Open Days scheme.
Here is a link to their website, which explains their connection with the bouncing bomb experiments. Their work is not widely known.
Thanks for the compliments, everyone.
Are there no rivet counters about this early in the year? The Rapide is in the Southern Division colours, whereas it operated for Fresson’s Northern Division. We preferred the silver below the cheat line scheme on the nacelles.
There’s a good museum in Iceland, too – or would that be grounds for a divorce?
In any case, better check to see if it is open in the winter, and remember that winter means real winter there. It is at Akuryei on the northern edge of the island.
Pram pushing on the motorway is also banned.
Can’t think why.
Getting back to ‘hanger’ and hangar,’ some of us use the phrase ‘hanger left’ etc when a road turning comes up. But how should that one be spelled (or spelt?)
Sixty posts on how to spell words! There must be some hope for us pedants after all. (Or should that be ‘we pedants?’)
For a weekday snack, or even a proper meal (with a very limited menu) there is always the Officers Mess across the road. Prices are more than reasonable, and some of the atmosphere of the old Mess is still there to be soaked up. Quite a few of the Duxford staff eat there at midday. You would have to check whether you can get a pass out, of course. And mind the traffic!
