Its a Gipsy Major 10-1 modified to run upright, but the flying shots were overdubed as the original footage was Super 8 cine film.
Propstrike, actualy our fin outline is correct for a “c” model. Many “c”‘s were later fitted with the more rounded “E” fin as was the one at Lambeth. The whole tail section was drawn up and built a new, the Tailplane outline is actualy that of a “b” and very early “c”, the later “c” had a much more square appearance.
[QUOTE=Propstrike]The Reading flying Group at White Waltham operates Tiger G-ANFM, which attained star -status for its appearance in Thunderbirds (It was Thunderbird 6).
Now there’s a funny thing, GASML’s got a share in G-ANFM as well!!!
Myself and other forumite GASML own BE2c replica G-AWYI, this A/C was built for a feature film based on the Biggles books “Biggles Sweeps The Skies” by my father in 1969. The film was never completed and the BE2 was sold off to a private owner in the USA. During this time it was filmed by the BBC and used in their TV series “Wings” in the second series ir appears in the tittle sequence.
It was crashed in 1977 and lanquised at thew back of a shed at Old Rhinebeck untill retrived and brought back to Sywell in May of last year. She is currently undergoing a full rebuild to flying condition. You can see somthing on this on BBC east “Inside Out” programe on Monday 23rd Sept at 7.30. that this coming Monday.
Have a good one TT.
A foghorn leghorn!!!!!!!
“Wings” filming was in about 1973, she didnt fly again in the US untill 72 and thats when the BBC researchers found her.
And no it wont be at ********* , well not this year anyway 😉
I’d love to but i dont know which way he came in!!!!!!! The Sywell book is no longer available, but it does come up on Ebay now and again!
Gipsys wings fold in about 5 min flat for easy storage, the idea was that you kept it at home in your garage and towed it down to your local farmers field to go flying!
Here’s one of G-ABUS @Sywell with Blue Max senior in the coclpit.
G-ABUS has not flown for many a long year and i suspect is in need of some major attention before it flew again. Is it even still in the UK? i had heard that when Roger Bailey moved to France he took it with him? Anybody know if there is any truth in this? G-ABUS has a place close to my heart, my father spent many a happy hour flying her when she was based at Sywell. I tried to contact Pete Shannon a couple of years ago to find out what state BTC was in but with no response. A few years ago i aquired a full set of plans for the swift with the intention of building one! one day!? Mind you i would rather rebuild an original!!!!
Just an unlimited budget and an unlimited display lenght please!!! and go from there!
She looks fantastic, hope to see her out and about. Can someone PM me with owners details, hoping to have a bit of a WW1 thing at Sywell 2006 on the 24th Sept and would love to see her there.

The Avro Triplane was, or is powered by a Blackburn Cirus running the other, or right way up. The Italian chapy was flying the Vickers22 or film Bleriot. I belive it is still with PPS and is now a Manning Flanders Replica.
