And I thought they had gone to Burma……:D
:D:D
I thought they had gone to Bicester:confused:
Whatever happens, the Great War Society will be there doing a WW1 Infantry and Royal Flying Corps display, including myself, with the Sopwith Pup static replica they have there. Just finished repairs to one of my replica Lewis guns and ready for the three hour trip tomorrow!
Doesnt look like I will make it down to Stow this weekend with the forcast and Sywell Closed untill next week!! So look after my Pup Rob, I dont want any holes in it!!!
I don’t think it’s looking too hopeful for this weekend. Car parking could be a problem on waterlogged fields.
The weather forecast for the rest of the week and weekend looks petty foul 🙁
Also the restrictions in airspace around Brentwood and Chelmford for the RAF Olympic Flypast preparations for Saturday and Sunday dont look to much fun either!!
Sadly at the moment Sywell is water logged and not open untill at least Monday:( And thats before the rain that is forecast tomorrow so I think the BE2 will be staying firmly in the hangar, and with the forcast for the weekend they dont seem to have much luck with the weather at Stow Maries:(
Lets hope the weather improves before the following weekend and our trip to Marham:)
Fantastic, beutifull to see. Well done all involved and I agree with Andy what an interesting time for WW1 aviation around the world. I just wish we could get Airshows in the UK to get a little more interested and work out that there is more than Spitfire’s and Mustang’s out there!
Thanks Guys, Ok I think I have the level now 🙂
Well having Googled John Lilley he dosent seem to have any experiene in rebuilding any Warbirds?? Or any other A/C from what I can see??
So what have the people involved in this project restored before? I note that the project lead John Lilley is listed as “Warbird Restorer”, just trying to get a handle on how serious this actualy is a none of the names ring any bells?
Yes indeed -it was however forty years ago !
And that scheme is now Historic:diablo:
As always its up to the owner, so when you buy and opperate your Buchon you can paint it in Spanish Airforce Colours. I just hope you wont need Airshow bookings to help run it:diablo:
The Strutter was originally built to be a two seat trainer for pilots at Thorpe Park but converted to a single seater for the RAF musuem. At that time a replica had to have flown to be accepted and so it flew for about 1 1/2 hours. Don Cashmore’s Tabloid was flown with a Warner Scarab and ailerons before going into the museum and Bristol his M1C was also made, flown minimally, and then retired to the museum.
Viv also had, at one time, a spare set of Camel wings and these went onto the DH2 replica.
Melv, Don Cashmore’s Tabloid didnt fly with a Warner. It had a continental in it, I think a Warner would be kinda big for a Tabloid:D
A flat four Lyc is not going to be easily hidden in something Inline! Be easier to hide it in a Rotary cowl with a dummy infront of it.
The CAA permit is not the same as the LAA permit. The horsepower is irrelevant. A stress analysis would have to be submitted as part of the approval process but it’s nothing that hasn’t been done before. Would be a nice project to see completed.
I am fully aware of the difference between an CAA and a PFA/LAA permit. I was replying to a post that suggested it would have been a LAA project in which case the horsepower IS an issue.
I agree it would be loverly to see completed and it is nothing that hasnt been done before, however that does not mean that it is getting any easier!!
The aircraft was going to be used for a film project – power was going to be Alvis Leonides 125 from memory. It had ground to a halt long before John Jordan died.
Technically speaking I am sure it would have been in the PFA remit i.e same as the Fairey Flycatcher so I don’t believe it was ever going to be an issue with the CAA .
Stressing would have been an issue and needed to be sorted, and lack of drawings mean new drawings have to be produced and the A/C reverse engineered, also the leonindes is 600 plus HP so is outside the remit of 400HP max of the LAA. I have the same issues with another project!
The 1 1/2 Strutter in Hendon IS a Replica, it was built by Viv Bellamy and if I recall correct it only flew a couple of times before going into the musem.
I have a set of wing ribs (non flying)for one in the workshop if anyone wants one????
Yes but whenever anything is ever mentioned here as going abroad from the UK all the people moan and groan.
Have you ever considered that they might be going to a better home than they actually already have?
After all, Jackson will probably rebuild the Farman to flying condition. Just like he did the BE2C which languished in a shed at Salisbury hall for years and years. As to G-ADPR, it was disposed of by the Collection some years ago now.
To be honest, to most people who attend shows at OW, it was just another private aeroplane, and I’m not certain it isn’t actually in a better place from point of view of long term preservation now.Andy
