That must have been shortly before Robin had the engine failure in Germany!! He had a Lycoming 0360 in it after that, I flew it with the Lycoming and it went very well! Interesting to see the Crunchie Syearman in the back ground, Robin flew these alot at this time as well.
Thanks for sharing the pic, brings back happy memories.
A WW1 Bi-plane crashed at North Weald during the 80’s, possibly 90’s, during an airshow practice. Was this a Sky Sport one?
It was a Leasure Sport A/C not Sky Sport. It was a Nieuport Replica that sadly claimed the life of Tony Harold 🙁
TBM, Are you involved in the SE5? Do you have any photographs that you can show us?
Yes I am and not really much at the mo that can be shown but here’s a taster, the rudder bar;)
Apart from the Biggles Biplane BE2 which is nearing its first flight, also at Sywell we have a full size SE5 on the go,(Gipsy Queen powered) , a Fokker DVI and are involved with another Fokker DR1 project. We also have the ex “Wing” static Sopwith Pup recieving some TLC.
They probably dont see the point as all that happens is the arm chair experts on hear will only slag it off, useally before they have even seen it:rolleyes:
With enough info you should be able to reverse engineer it. Probably as easy as trying to modify an exsiting rudder bar.
Here is an SE5 one we have just made, although we did have drawings for that.
Why not make from scratch??
Who, What, Where, When !!!!!
Can somebody please translate the French web site or give a little bit more detail.
If you open it through Google then you can ask Google to translate it for you;)
Hi Blue Max,
There was a BE2 replica there, which I believe is now in Kent (Manston, I think). I don’t recall its previous history, before North Weald though, sorry.
Is it in the Museum at Manston do you know??
I think the Old Warden aeroplane lost a chunk of cowling when something vital flew off the rotary…
What Rolls-Royce calls an ‘uncontained failure’ these days 😉
I also seem to recollect the Great War Team’s Warner-engined Pup replica having a similar experience.
It was the Great War Teams Sopwith Triplane that Lost its cowl near Rendcomb in 2008. The cowl didnt come right off, it came loose and started to eat its way through the prop!!
RIP Bill, im sure he will soon have those angels licked into shape on their circuit discipline. Blue Skies sir, its the end of an era:(
Interesting. Are any of them still airworthy, or were they converted back to standard Tiger Moth configuration? The other way of looking at it is it’s a heck of a waste of good Tiger Moths.
Mike, posts 3&4 cover that one;)
Yes they both still exist and both are still airworthy. The were not converted Tiger Moths, they are , as with our BE2, made from Tiger Moth components. If they were Tiger Conversions they would be DH82a’s Modified and would have Tiger registrations!. As with the BE2 they are new type’s. The BE2 being a Boddington 001 and the Rumplers being Slingsby T58’s. 🙂
The Jet Age example BAPC72 is the very same, though I seem to recall when the museum rescued it, we found it in external storage, the wings having been driven over by a fire engine 🙁
As Graham says, the wings are of a far inferior build quality which is a shame as the fuselage is much closer to the original than you’d expect.
Oh and yes in reply to your question Graham, it did have a few different motors in it’s time – mini starter motor, electric garage door motor..all set to turn very slowly as we didn’t really employ barriers or walkways at the Jet Age back then!
The prop blades were modified modern(ish) Dowty jobs, fashioned by a very skilled chap by the name of Martin Clarke (ex Dowty) who spent an age profiling them to as close to the original as possible. They look just the job!
Im glad it found a good home, it looked very neglected when i saw it!
We had one in the Bill Miles collection at North Weald in the late 70’s/early 80’s. I don’t know where this one ended up when the collection was dispersed?
There was also a BoB film hurricane displayed outside a pub at Allen’s Green Hertfordshire in the 70’s. Could this be one and the same?
Indeed, they were very convincing visual replicas I recall.
Did you have the “Wings” BE2 and Albatros there as well at that time??
Good to see these replica’s getting some TLC and good to see the Hurricane getting some attention for a change :). There used to be one in the hangar at Bournmouth where the Vampire’s and Venom’s were kept, what happened to that one??
