Indeed Bach did fly for Vr and Brown. He is in the front row of the picture below. far right. As an aside Low and Slow and myself purchased a Prop for the BE2 that came off Richard Bachs Tiger Moth that he brought with his earnings from “Jonathan Livingstons Seagull. Its a small world:)
Also in the picture below the Irish Air Corp pilot Jim Liddy who was killed in the mid air between the helicopter and Miles full size SE5 is standing far right in the back row.
Hi Simon. I supplied the pics for the article as my father was involved in the flying for the film. May I ask, what is your interest in the film?
“I shot down the Red Baron I think” was a spoof film that starred and was dirrected byCliff Robertson. It was filmed at Weston in Ireland and used the ex “Blue Max” A/C.
My father was involved in the flying and i have pics of the filming. Sadly it was never realesed as the producer was killed in the mid air between the Camera Helicopter and full size SE5 durring filming of “Zepperlin” All these films were shot around the same time to make use of the A/C. Von Richtofen and Brown was a completely seperate film.
Would be interesting to know what she was built for?? would also be nice to see her in the air again 😀 . Maybe you are confusing it with the fact it was used in “Wings” with the BE2 🙂
No Daz it wasnt, built for the film were two Rumplers and a Sopwith Camel by Slingsby’s, the Rumplers used Tiger Moth components and are both still flying in the USA, the Camel is now in the FAA museum:( Also built for the film was an Avro 504K built by Viv Belamy, this is now at Rhinebeck and last but not least of course our very own BE2:)
I read recently on the Wings Over New Zealand Forum that this aircraft was restored in New Zealand when owned by Pat Donovan at Omaka, shortly before it went to Old Warden, and that it taxied at a Classic Fighters airsho but red tape prevented it from flying on that occasion. If it was restored to that condition then, why has it has a long rebuild again now? Was it damaged? Was the NZ restoration not up to scratch? Is it one of those silly UK CAA things where they don’t trust overseas restorers?

Dave, as i understand it there were certain aspects of the structure the UK authorities, LAA, were not happy with.
Im supprised we havent seen any pics of her airborne!
Not sure whether it’s classed as historic but isn’t the Cranfield ?? still there – (in need of a good home?)
Roger Smith.
Cranfield A1, developed with Neil Williams and sadly lost its way following his death. Hadnt realised it was still there!
I wonder what the total cost of her restoration has been?
Probably best not to ask:diablo:
There’s a challenge for you then Ben, Get all the bits in one place and get it together as a complete A/C. Wellington hangar at Sywell would be ideal;)
“Owners of some ex-military aircraft may now need to be issued with a new Airworthiness Approval Note (AAN) and Permit to Fly reflecting the change in policy”
Bear in mind that the issue of a new AAN requires a thorough review and investigation of the aircraft’s status and will cost several thousand pounds in CAA time alone.
An issue of an initial one yes thats the case, I take it from that wording that in this instance the CAA will issue a new one where required to reflect the changes.
Good job its not Godiva, we’d never get any work done:diablo:
And as for the climax engine, if its that good TT how come its not in a Museum:diablo:
She is designed to fit a VW so thats what will prob go back in. A rotary is just a dream i guess but it would be rather nice to be able to show people a working rotary. After all apart from OW and Brooklands where can you do that!??
I’ll leave that one to you Ben!!!
I would like to thank Barry and all at MAM for there asistance in getting the Pup back home, I know it was not somthing that they were over the moon about happening but they were more than helpfull in its removal.
As has been said it had been at MAM for many years but it had not been loaned by my Uncle, he had loaned it to someone at North Weald who then loaned it to someone else without pemision. It had infact ended up there by passing through several hands and my Uncle had lost where it actualy was. One thing for sure if it had not ended up at MAM it may well not have survived!! Once relocated Uncle David was more than happy for it to remain at MAM untill we had a need for it. She was built for the TV series “Wings” and with the other former “Wings” BE2 nearing completion it was decided that the two should be together and hopefuly foam the centre piece for a posible “Wings” reunion. This was somthing my Uncle was very keen to see happen but sadly he passed away last April and was never to see it come home. Hopefully in the near future they will be displayed together for some photo’s and as has been said we hope to get the Pup mobile under her own steam, any one got a spare rotary out there that they would like to donate??;) She needs some TLC but watch this space
If anyone out there has details of any of the surviving R/C models from the series we would like to here from you, I know one of the BE2’s was hanging up in the sqaudron at Noth Weald, maybe a connection with the Pup there??
And I was contacted a few years ago by someone who had one of the Albatros’s but I have lost their details.
Sad news indeed, although known to us all thoughts are with her family and friends who will miss her all the more. RIP you have left a wonderfull legacy and will be remembered 🙁

Your RE8 Drawing post also seems to be hinting at somthing under hand to have taken place.
Maybe you need to choose your words a little more carefully, maybe its not what you are saying but how your are saying it??
I would imagine that a major reason is the cost involved in a respray 😉
