To be correct it has not been “Aeroplane Monthly” for some time! It changed to “Aeroplane”;)
I for one enjoy both publications and hope they both flurish in these cash strapped times as im sure they will under new captains.
I wish Mike and Ken all the best in their new ventures and thank them for all their hard work in producing excellent mags. I know Ken will still be contributing to “Flypast” and hope he will still be on the mike at Sywell 2012.
I was working the stand at Silverstone that weekend and we were swamped by people who wanted to know the wheres and whys etc, it was a fairly dynamic weekend with things changing and no final decision to the very last minute. Thats how determined all involved were in getting 558 in the air. It’s also worth noting that not a single person we spoke to went away anything other than fully understanding og the situation. there is plenty of info out there if people are prepardd to go to a little effort.
Bibbles im fully aware of what was happening that weekend being right at the front end of it. I am also fully aware of the on off nature of the situation right up to the last minute. As i have said that is not my point but that seems to be lost on here:rolleyes:
Hurn, as i said you are missing the point. Yes we were lucky at Sywell with the weather and this is not a winge that the Vulcan didnt appear!!! I was using Sywell as a way of pointing out that VttS needs to keep the people who donate the money happy! Many people went away that weekend unhappy and dont understand the opperating limitations of the A/C. VttS seems very bad at comunicating with the people who donate to keep the whole thing going. I applaude your support for them but from and outside view they need to get better at that. And yes hindsight is a wonderfull thing but the weather for the south coast that weekend was forcast to be pants, there may have been other reasons for basing it there for the weekend but the result was that alot of people were disapointed and VttS lost alot of revenue! They could have had 50% of both.
As i said i want to see Vulcan in the air, but i still feel the way she is opperated needs to change. Just my opinion.
Could it be a “paddle” blade from a late Mossie
Just what i was thinking!! I think we need more info, with that i mean another photo with someone by it for comparison. if you know what i mean:diablo:
Blue Max, perhaps you should have reminded said gentleman that the Vulcan is a PtF aircraft and thus can only fly in VFR conditions.
The cloudbase at Hurn where the Vulcan was based for the airshows that weekend was down to 200 feet at times.
B/mth, Shoreham, Silverstone and Sywell all missed out on a Vulcan display because of the weather.Hardly anything bar the commercial stuff flew in or out of Hurn that weekend, and B/mth airshow was canx in the end.
Certainly not the fault of the VttS or the Vulcan which was primed and ready to go IF conditions cleared sufficiently, which sadly they didn’t.
I think Hurn you have missed the point a little, the point i was making is that any display A/C that has sponsors has to keep the sponsors happy. With VttS those sponsors are the people who donate. I would question the decision to base her at Bourmouth for the weekend when she had display comitments else where, the weather on the south coast that weekend was well forcast before hand. The result was she failed to honour any of her display comitments where she could have done 50% of them. Dont get me wrong i want to see this A/C in the air but i fear that VttS needs to change the way they opperate her if they are going to succeed in this. No one can do anything about the weather but they can plan a little better!!!
This years Sywell was the second display on the trot that she was booked but failed to appear, as organisers you then have to deal with the disgruntalled putters and eventually you have to wonder if its worth it??
Now you could say we have just been unlucky, but Sywell is not the only display to be disapointed. I want to see this A/C in the sky for as long as posible, if that is to happen then i think there needs to be a change in how VttS is run and how the A/C is opperated. The A/C has to be opperated in a safe manner, that is paramount, but it also has to be opperated in a commercial manner as well.
It needs to earn its donnations not just expect them.
This is a good business model & I’ll explain why:
Ever go to a strip joint where the girls are tipped while dancing on stage, then see a girl do her act at a pub & walk through the crowd after with a pint pot collecting from every punter/table?
They make about 5-10x as much in the latter scenario.
& yes, I dated a few when I lived in London, roomie worked at Paul Raymonds place so I know what I’m talking about 🙂
Your model goes out the window when the A/C fails to turn up, as she has done so several times. At Sywell this year one gentleman was heard to mutter ” Thats the 3rd airshow in a row i have paid to come to and she her fly and still i havent, thats the last time i donate to the bloody thing!!!”
TT, check your emails.
L & S, if its the bent ones in the workshop that came from Rhinebeck they are repairable!!!!!:diablo:
Gift of Wings. Richard Bach
Moggy
No contest, thats the one for anyone that flies:)
How long has the fabric been on there and what is it??? Linen or polyester??
I would personaly recomend removing it and recovering anyway!
…and the film with a-26 firebombers in it done in the ’80s..seem to remember a nice dead-stick landing in one scene….was it “Inferno”..??
I think your thinking of “Always”
Tiger Moth as Curtis Jenny in “Villa Rides”
Graham, a ‘free’ ride in a Permit aircraft is perfectly acceptable and legal. The CAA do not permit operators to charge for flights in such aircraft on a profit making basis.
Correct, that is the case with Permit A/C such as the Spit.
As always we have the moaners on here who can do nothing but knock these programmes.
I for one enjoyed the programme and would have the same reaction as Colin if i ever get the chance to fly a Spit, I think it would bring a tear to my eye as well, in fact it did!
ive got Tiger and Harvard so who knows!!!!:D
I was supprised that there was no mention Leigh Mallory
All in all a good prog 🙂
Well seeing as a DH 60 Gipsy Moth dosent have a seperate oil tank it aint one of those!!!! It has a wet sump.
As to what it from?????
Just watched it on the i Player and thouroughly enjoyed it. Yes i know we will get those that moan about the wrong mark of Spit or the wrong colour but having been involved in these things that comes down to budgets. Not as good as the book which is excellent but then you can not expect it to be. Always thought the book would make a great series similar to Piece of Cake! Some great BoB film footage that i for one had not seen before and for me the best thin of all, no crap use of CGI !!!
All in all a great program and very moving in places, well done BBC and all involved. Here’s to more in the same vain 🙂
It most definitely is!
I thought AR213 would have been used, given the relevance of the variant (not to mention the correct colour scheme!). But, hey ho! Roll on 9pm tonight! 😀
Me too???? Thats not gona look right at all is it? Surley AR213 was used as well:confused:
Interesting on the advert he says fully functioning Tiger Moths are fetching 40K! However this machine would require 40K plus to get it to that standard!
Probably more than that, its not got an engine and one of those cost in the region of £30K to overhaul if you had one! However Tigers in pristine condition are fetching nearer £70K:)
