Lightning P1 wind tunnel model
Here are a couple of poor mobile phone pics of the Lightning wind tunnel model that we have just unpacked and assembled for display. I thought it looked so good on its purpose built stand I would post the pics anyway. Took a bit of head scratching to build it!
Note to self: Get new phone or bring camera next time.
And you don’t need a super duper PC either!
I forgot to mention, I run the 99pence version on an archaic PC without a hitch. All the Microsoft ones need quite high spec machines (especially FSX) to achieve the same results as IL2. I think IL2 flies more realistically than any of the Microsoft sims and its way more fun!
Sheer value for money.
Absolute pure class. Shows up all the Hollywood CGI stuff when you see what you can do with a great sim program going for 99 pence in some game shops in the UK 2nd hand. And obviously a lot of hard editing work! The PS3 version cost me nearly £40 and was not a patch on IL2 for PC.
Olympia glider at RAF Millom
Here is a pic of our Olympia glider. I had a go in a K21 at Walney (Barrow in Furness) a couple of months ago. It was the most fun I have ever had flying. Been flying powered for 6 years.
All cockpits now open for viewing
Just unwrapped the Lightning and the JP Mk5 today and although these photos dont do them much justice, I can assure you they look fantastic. Especially the Lightning. It looks pristine. I will upload some better photos soon.
We have now cleared enough space and unpacked enough sets of steps to enable viewing of all the cockpits.

Volunteers from further afield.
Sorry Anon, I forgot about you! Its only been about a week since you were last up and all!
BAE stock.
Ken,
We have quite literally millions of ex BAE rivets that we are in the process of unpacking here at Millom. If you dont turn any up from anywhere else we will have a look for you. We could really do with having a bit of a handover with the BAe Heritage lads first as there is a proper stores computer with everything catalogued. In the event of us not having time to look ourselves, you would be welcome to browse yourself.
Reorg progress update
Not great pics I’m afraid but I hope it shows enough of what has been going on over the last few weeks. We have been working our way back from the front entrance segregating exhibits from storage to create a definite barrier between the two. We are still open to the public at all 3 sites in the town despite all of the bad weather that is affecting other parts of Cumbria. Basically if you are coming from the south there are no problems. I would recommend calling the Haverigg reception on 01229 777444 to warn them if you want access both sites as volunteers are thin on the ground trying to staff both sites 7 days a week.
On the volunteers theme, we have many unique projects awaiting restoration and the right equipment and facilities for the job. We just need more bodies. Some of our volunteers travel from Wigan and Morcambe, so transport may not be such a problem if you live near these towns.
No instant success.
As Miggers posted. “This guy is your teacher;
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G60fP6EPZIo
His gunnery is superb.”
I think he may have the setting “no instant success” turned off in IL2. You have to get a lot more rounds into an aircraft to to that much damage with “realistic gunnery” and “no instant success turned on”. With “no instant sucess” turned off, any rounds on target will immediately disable the enemy aircraft.
Creative firing angles though.
How to reassemble a Jetstream in the dark
From the pictures it may look like a crash site, but it was the RAF Millom volunteers re-assembling G-EEST the JS-31 from Eastern Airways. It took so long to get the main wing pin on the port wing that it got dark! Next step now is to get the horizontal stab. & undercarriage on.
Old ben (748 G-ATMI) has been moved to a more visible position (dragged very un-ceremoniously by a JCB!). Now he will have to be repainted and patching finished. A cunning ploy to bring him up the priority jobs list!
Missiles
Stacey, There are 2 Firestreaks, 2 Sparrows and a Sea Eagle. You would need to speak to the boss about loans of missiles. I am but a mere volunteer! Go to the contact bit on our updated website http://www.rafmillom.co.uk
Massive Re-org continues
The small team of volunteers have again been grafting this week. The almost full museum has been getting packed tidily away as space is somehow created. The Devonshire Road site 2 is now open again to visitors and we have a new exhibit area / lecture theatre. See pic with missiles on.
A big re-shuffle and tidy up is happening this Sat. This includes reassembly of G-EEST the Jetstream 31. Any volunteers would be most welcome.
Pics are new entrance area and new missile display in new room.
