Yes Chris, that’s the video I was referring to. That doesn’t seem like very gentle taxiing to me, but what do I know.
Mark, I think a lot of warbird owners don’t fly the beasts themselves. And wisely so.
People all too easily forget these machines were state-of-the-art hot rods when they first emerged over 60 years ago. In any case, they were definitely not designed to be Sunday afternoon leisure rides 🙂
What happened on La Ferte then?
I saw a video of the 109 taking off in a rather wobbly fashion and also taxiing it at a rather high speed (faster than one would taxi a P-39 or similar tri-cycle plane). I raised an eyebrow at that but I’ve never seen it for real myself so can’t really comment on it.
Will do! 🙂
LOL! I will bookmark this post as a classic example of how to start a flame war in no-time! 😀
1) Initial post with speculation presented as fact

Well done 🙂
I believe take-off accidents, engine failures and general flying accidents (stalls, spins, flying too low) etc. generally are much higher than landing accidents. But I could be wrong. But definitely not 30% of all machines and even 30% of all losses sounds outrageous too. I guess the real figure is up in the air (pun unintended) and we’ll never know for sure 🙂
PS. With combat losses I mean planes being shot down by enemy aircraft of AAA.
I seem to remember reading that roughly 30% of 109’s were lost in take-off and landing accidents (can anyone confirm this)
No, that’s not true. If a third of the 109s would crash on landing Germany wouldn’t have even started a war 🙂 It’s just a popular misconception.
If I remember correctly, the actual figure is that 30% of non-combat losses were due to landing mishaps. This is still a high figure but nothing near as dramatic as ten thousand* 109s crashing on landing!! 😀
* NB. Approximately 33,000 Bf 109s were produced
Lovely. Again I was out of the country and couldn’t go…
O my God, I can’t believe this! And so soon too! What a terrible shame! 🙁
Good thing the pilot got away though! Let’s hope the plane will be restored again in the future.
Glad for those who managed to see it fly. I didn’t 🙁
Be carefull, my computer detected a virus on the file.
Then you best check your computer as there’s nothing wrong with that file…
Hehehe bad man 🙂 Great story!

Very nice! Next year give a holler and we can meet up maybe? 🙂
Nice set of pictures, Fergy 🙂 Thanks!
I didn’t. I tried 1, and L, but was too stupid to realise it was an i 🙂 *slaps own back of head*
